Remove gold card requirement for 100 completion

Recommended Posts

I've been playing this game with my wife and daughter for a year I think. My daughter is soon to be 7. It's not her first game. Thanks to story mode on many modern games she has completed some amazing stories like horizon zero dawn,  the remastered Spider-Man, and rachet and clank rift apart to make a few. But for the better part of a year I've been there with her and my wife helping them get through this game. It's been wonderful and I can tell this is a memory she will not forget. Even though we played on easy difficulty it's still been a lot of work.

When we first started I didn't know much about the game but all the graphics seemed to suggest it would be goofy. Boy were we surprised when the wolf spider raids your first camp. Up until that moment we had assembled a fence and various structures and it seemed like a great creative game. The wolf spider was alarming and I have a rule with games that I let my daughter play - action is fine, terror is not. So I called it. I explained that I didn't think she was ready and that we'd find another game.

We went on to other games and at her age her skill continuously expanded and she became a gamer. 6 months later she requested to try it again. Reluctantly I said yes and we all started over. This time we pushed through and it wasn't long before we started feeling like masters of the back yard.

A couple weeks ago we finally beat it. We soaked up so much of it along the way that we noticed that we had accomplished many of Xbox achievements for it. With just a handful of achievements left and with my daughter not wanting the game to end yet I decided that we'd try to 100 percent it. Due to the design decision to keep the perfect score ambiguity it was very hard to know what would be required. Eventually I purchased an account on map genie and I went through and toggled all the found things. We went through and completed it all. Upon getting the last scab and growing big we were confronted with 'get all creature cards' 'including gold'. This entirely unmentioned element in the game. It served no purpose and from that I've learned you added it in 1.3.

WTF we're you thinking? It's bad enough corporate America is only able to view games as gambling and continuously cramming gambling mechanics down kids throats because it's all they understand about games - it's not like we could just like it because it's art and it's fun. So what do you do, add an RNG mechanic to an achievement. How is that achieving anything? Why not just go full on weasel and charge for the achievement?

I am not looking forward to telling my daughter that this is a no go. No sane person would want to kill enemies 100s of times hoping for RNG gold card reward. So instead I get you turn this into a teachable moment. This is what blinded by success looks like. I hope the lingering engagement of fanatics is worth it.
