Dandelion tufts stopped being reliable

Since the recent update I've sometimes found my tufts not working when I try to use them, which sucks since it means suffering damage I had prepared to avoid. At first I assumed it was my own error or perhaps a lag in button response, but just now I tested it out multiple times and it's not working at all. I tried dropping the tufts and picking them up again, but still not working.

What do you mean by reliable?  Are they equipped?  Im not having issues using them to glide around.
