I wanted to give you a gameplay suggestion I haven't seen in many games but could be quite an effective tool. Seeing as you probably took some inspiration from Bioshock. I suggest implementing companion AI that also takes inspiration from it. Take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6uwI_MOjjc they suggest behavior that is quite effective and increases player engagement. In essence, it boils down to AI following a path to the active goal and keeping itself ahead so it's almost always in view of the player. Adapting it in an RPG game could simply be done by using the selected objective as the goal and by already having spatial information where the player needs to goal, an optimal path could easily be calculated.
