Is it possible to recruit companions at a later time if you choose to not take them along when they first appeared?

 

For example if you decline taking Maja along can you get her later? 

 

I have a case where I actually aggreed to take Maja along but I guess there was a bug and she was never added to my party. I thought maybe she will meet me later on the island but that did not happen. I did not replay it so I am currently without Maja. I haven't seen here in the Brass Citadel so I guess she is not available anymore.

 

But I was wondering if you can decline companions and recruit them later.
