So I replaced the file mss32.dll in the Kotor 2 folder with the one from Kotor 1. At least the prelude after character selection starts up now - then it crashes. jesus.

So I received Kotor II as a gift for Christmas. It doesn't work; and when I say it doesn't work I mean that it gives me a message about the time the cd starts up that there is a problem with the program. I did load it as administrator and under XP Service Pack 2 as suggested. I also ran it in that mode. The opening titles and the character selection worked one time. Then it crashed before I could finish my character selection. It would gave me the same error message as initially described after that. The information about my computer is below. I loved KOTOR 1, so hopefully somebody can assist me with this problem.
