  1. I felt that was ludicrous even at the time it was written. Mixing real world and cartoons on that level simply doesn't work for me. Using real world concepts in a generic sense in fine, but once you start bringing in real world people and places, the whole thing falls apart. FOr me.

Supposed to be a throwback to the 40s era comics, where Superman and even Bugs Bunny took a peice out of Hitler's a$$. Problem is that the audience has changed. People back then trusted and respected their goverments and leaders. Nowdays the last few presidents haven't been worth much trust or respect, including the current.

No, the difference back then was that we were in a war we were dangerously close to losing. Thanks to some courageous leadership and some lucky breaks we came out victorious but for a long time we had no idea whether we would win or lose and the people were scared. Everyone HAD to rally around the flag. The war on terror is not taken as seriously, people seem to think we are invincible or they are too busy watching American Idol.

  2. Yeah, the concern has been raised in earlier threads. I, too, am fed up with the American way of depicting themselves as heroes and the only just cause on the planet, whether consciously or subconsciously, but this world view seems so deeply ingrained in the common American mind that they no longer even react to/notice it. Kind of like the Chinese looking out across the borders, wondering in surprise why the rest of the world thinks they're oppressed.

I expect no more from Obsidian (it's not really their job, after all) so I'll settle for snorting derisively while playing the game. Because play it I will.

Yes, The islamists, Soviets, Putin, Chinese, Somali Pirates, Sudanese Government, Saddam Hussein, North Korea, Iranian Supreme Leader/Ahmadinejad, Castro and Chavez are simply misunderstood. No way are Americans considered the good guys when it comes to these poor souls they keep picking on. The UN has done so much to keep peace in the world too, passing a new anti-Israel resolutuion every other week yet ignoring Hamas.

More often than not, America ARE the good guys and NATO is the only international organization who gets anything done.

As for the Chinese, you prove your ignorance here. I'm sure Tibet, East Turkestan, the Falun-gong, Taiwan, The students at Tiananmen Square and the Dalai Lama are the true oppressors, right? Go ahead and "snort derisively" at them. While you're at it, you can snort derisively at the citizens of Darfur, the Tsunami victims in Thailand and the anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan; all people who America, as well as the CIA, have assisted in recent years.

    Ignorance = LOL.

  3. I'm no MBA but I definitely wouldn't want to see it delayed to anywhere near the drop dates for ME2 or Splinter Cell. Seems like they need to get it out by mid November to me, again assuming it's done.

Having dealt with more than a few MBAs before returning to academia, I am fairly sure that a surgical removal of common sense is part of most curricula. :)

LMAO, I'm inclined to agree. Classic case of book knowledge vs real world knowledge.

  4. My second post in this thread had a sentence that started with 'if they delayed it 'til christmas', and this is the 3-4th time I write it. If that isn't concise enough for you, then that's that.

Also, the most important (read: biggest) holiday is christmas, however you look at it.

And with that, I consider the case closed, it's not like I'm trying to tell Obs what to do.

    ???

No actually you never said that. This thread has 3 pages, I just looked over all of your posts. In your first you said you weren't against a delay, in your second you said you liked KOTOR 2's ending and your third is the one I responded to.

Christmas is the biggest money making holiday, no doubt about it, but my point is that most people get thier Christmas shopping done in October, November and early December. After a couple weeks in December the Christmas Rush is essentialy done aside from frantic stragglers like myself squeezing in last minute shopping. This is why releasing too late in December actually loses the benefits of Christmas. This is my point, I still have no idea what yours is. When you say "delayed til christmas" do you literally mean on or around Christmas day?

And nobody is trying to tell Obsidian what to do. They've had enough of that from certain publishers in their past.

  5. Well, the Russian Orthodox Christmas is in January which is not before 2010. :(

So you want the game to be delayed until December? After the crowds have spent their money and when MW2 and L4D2 will be sucking up all the attention?

No I think October 6th is a great date for them to release the game. Plenty of time for the game to build up word of mouth to get some extra sales in December (like the 360 version of L4D did last year). Launching in December around Christmas is tough because you lose the majority of the holiday rush, including the all important Black Friday.

And it's not like there will be no competition because the competition will already be on store shelves.

Not getting paid in between october and december, and losing holiday rush before freaking christmas?

    Mind=blown.

I don't think I have any idea what you are trying to say. When do you want the game released? From how I am reading it you seem to think releasing around Christmas of this year instead of in October or November...correct? If you do this, you sacrifice the most important holiday months.

    please answer in concise statments.

  6. Goes without saying, but I agree with the 'delay won't hurt' idea.

    I understand your point.

Its just that the more games that get delayed til Q1/Q2 2010, the more likely Alpha Protocol will be pushed to Q3 2010 or even Q4 2010. I just would not like that.

It's a bit early to say for sure, but I don't know of any major games that are set to be released before the Christmas rush (correct me if I'm wrong). A Christmas release would give Obs +~2 months to tweak the game and less competition.

All of these delays benefit Obsidian greatly. Less competition for AP to deal with and more of a chance that gamers will give it a closer look when released. Games like Alpha Protocol, Borderlands, Operation Flashpoint and WET are all games whose profile is suddenly elevated now that so many big titles have slipped to 2010. The first half of 2010 looks much more hostile than Q4 of 2009. As long as AP is finished by the time it is released, October is a fantastic launch window for Obsidian. The only other RPGs seem to be Magna Carta, a JRPG and Bioware's Dragon Age, a Fantasy RPG. The biggest games releasing this year are a Racing Sim (Forza 3) and 3 FPS' (Halo: ODST in September and MW2 and L4D2 which will be at each others throats in November). On the PS3 you have Uncharted 2 in October but most of AP's sales will probably be on the 360 anyway. They are in a good position here as far as consoles go, I'm sure AP will do just fine on the PC no matter what.

Releasing in 2010 would put AP too close to Mass Effect 2 for comfort. Not to mention all of the other heavily hyped games.

Edit: oh and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is another game releasing in September that everyone seems to forget about but will surely be a big hit. Still, the competition is a lot less stiff than it was before these delays.

  7. I wasn't saying the Giant bomb pic should be used, I am saying it at least catches the eye and looks better. The Elevator Action box art looks better and is true to the game. You can pat Obsidian on the back all you want, I love their games too, but overwhelming feeback on gaming forums everywhere has been highly negative to the cover. It is bad box art and whether it is right or not, people do judge a game to some extent by the art on the cover when it is a new IP. Mass Effect didn't have the best box art either, but they were able to ride off of their name while Obsidian does not have that luxury. Obsidian is still a mystery to a lot of people and many foolishly think of them as the guys who made that "other" KOTOR game which seemed rushed. They need every edge they can get, this box art is not it.

I agree they should stick with something that looks stealthy and spy-like, but not what they have now.

I agree it catches the eye better, but it doesnt catch the essence. Thats the exact opposite problem with the official box art. If only there was something to catch the eye of people who know nothing about it, and show off what the game is all about.

We agree then. I like the idea of having a guy in shadows on the cover, but they could do it in a much more attractive and slick way. I really want this game to be a sucess and for Obsidian to get some recognition from all the lemmings out there.

  8. The official Box Art looks terrible. Obviously it won't dissuade any fans of Obsidian to buy the game but it certainly won't catch any eyes of people walking by. It is plain and uninspired. That giant bomb photoshop is actually pretty good and has the right idea especially when it comes to the color scheme.

I cant disagree more. What does a nuke going off in the background have to do with spys? Then the guy fading into black looks more like Vinny than MT, Which doesnt quite hit me right. It doesnt look like hes stealthing away, more of hes getting pushed aside because the nuke is the main picture. A color scheme of Red, Orange and Black doesnt say spy game to me, it says run and gun with a bunch of explosives and grenades. A navy blue gives off more espionage vibes, making it seem more like a stealth shooter. Anyways, i might be the only one on the forum that says this, but i think the original boxart looks great. Good job Obs!

    Rip this off:

...Now that was some classic box art and screams SPY GAME
