I have the same problem which makes the game unplayable for me on mac os. Fortunately i have a bootcamp partition so i can still play it but i would prefer playing in mac os. I have a mac pro plugged to an external screen via display port. I managed to get in the options and switch to windowed mode with your workaround but it's not ideal.

Same problem here. I can't even get in the game. The game launches, i hear the music and see the game cursor, but the screen stays black. I'm using an external screen plugged by display port on a GTX970. I had to install the game in windows to play which i hate having to do.
