I usually like to play characters that look somewhat like me* because RPGs for me are usually insert myself into this situation/world/whatever rather than trying to play the role of someone else. It's why I usually skip games with a set in stone protaganist like the Witcher series.

*In SWTOR all my characters are blue... da ba dee da ba daa

quirky aside, but being blue is 'bout as white as it gets.  is an appalachian family (eastern kentucky) which has/had a genetic disorder resulting in blue skin.  is a genetic recessive disorder, so it not take much to surmise why such a trait were so common in the fugate family.

*shudder*

the blueness has become rare as the family added more diversity to their gene pool.

you can find pictures o' a few fugate family members.  coloring is indeed reminiscent o' violet beauregarde.

HA! Good Fun!

''I am not gonna look for hours on guys butt''

Heh, I said near exactly that last time this came up here.

(I don't mind spending hours looking at a guy's butt when it's the right guy though, like Commander Jax from Piranha Bytes' seminal masterpiece ELEX.)

Women's day is a drinking holiday? Huh. And here I thought it was stupid. How wrong I was. I think I'll pour a drink and raise a toast to chicks!

Well it is a Socialist day so stands to reason you'd dislike it. But why do you need an excuse to drink? :p

I always thought people who actually stare at the butts of their characters instead of paying attention to what's happening on screen to be the reason why I spent to many hours yelling at my screen infrustration while playing MMOs. The hell, the only important thing is the hitbox of your character relative to environmental dangers. Why bother giving a rat's behind about how it looks?

90% of the time you aren't fighting but are wandering around or talking or whatever. And while a bit reductionist if you're only really worried about hitboxes then you end up with no visual customisation of the character, and would thus miss out on gems such as Big Bushy Beard,  Crusty Jugglers Fisherman Hat + Orange Aviators Mike Thorton being complimented on blending in to Naples Rome by Conrad Marburg.

It's actually far more about the voice for me, as I tend to pay more attention to women's voices. More people probably should play as females for that reason since (scientifically) both men and women pay more attention overall to a female voice- hence why you have far more Bitching Betty warning systems than Droning David ones.

"I have one question: Why dwarves?"

They're dwarves. That's why. No real logical reason as I just always liked them. Honourable, battle hardened, tough, hard workers (which is funny since I'm lazy and unmotivated in real life. :p), loyal, etc., etc. And, they make elves cry.  Win win.

As for representation, I was referring to representation in all media not just video games. If you listen to the media you would believe that blacks were a super minority of like 30-40% when in reality they are around 13% and some other minorities (like latino) are actually a biger minority yet are way less represented in the media hence my comment of  when people talk diversity they often mean 'more blacks' hence why some have bragged how Black Panther is the 'most diverse movie ever' which is bullocks (quality argument asides).

Back to video games, again, I try not to limit myself 9my love for dwarves aside) because the point of roleplaying is to play someone other than yourself.

omg, this thread, you guys.

If a game gives me a choice I usually end up making my characters female, sorta Asian and loosely (very loosely) like me. Identity or laziness (I don't have to imagine a new face), I'm not sure which, maybe both.

But it doesn't bother me to have no choice either. Sometimes I even prefer such these days because I don't have to think about fiddling with 5 pages of slider bars in an editor. Just depends.

Since RPG worlds often have a stark apartheid combined with an extreme wealth inequality, I usually try to play a character from the lower upper class, or the upper middle class. I feel like those are the socio-economic backgrounds that have, historically, always produced very interesting characters.

As a Slav with partial Finno-ugric and Tartar origins I feel extremely underrepresented in the gaming industry! Not a single game ever created gave me the possibility to play that kind of character!

Now excuse me, some internet outrage needs to be done...

I like playing dwarfs and other small races too. My wife has the theory, that it's a sign of low self esteem. Don't know, if she has a point.

That sounds like an interesting starting point to build a fantasy culture around. Also it sounds like something Josh Sawyer would do. Maybe you're lucky. :)

Had to look up what Finno-ugric means. That's a lot of languages I never even heard of. Just imagine what one could do with those.

Reading this topic made me realize that the only time I've played a non-white was Wasteland 2 last year. One party had an "Arab" and the other an "African American". Unless you count The Nameless One or The Last Castoff but... Nah, those are whities.
