Make sure to get Hel-Hyraf's for those hard to penetrate monsters.

Wasn't Hel-Hyraf substantially nerfed in the recent Beta update?  (From -5 Armor to -2?)  Is the consensus still that it is useful/necessary?

It was, and Penetration as a whole is a lot less important than it used to be because they "softened" the curve out, but given how much bonus damage you can get from overpenetrating, it still feels very much worthwhile to me. -2 is still a pretty big deal, that's the difference between chain and leather. It won't matter all the time but when it matters it really matters.

  • 2 weeks later...

Currently doing a re-run of Pillars 1 in preparation for Deadfire, I'm really torn being roleplaying and practical/build choices for Pallegina.   My story preference makes her turn into a Kind Wayfarer, yet I really don't want to lose her Wrath of the Five Suns ability with her current order....

*sigh* what to do....

Same problem here. too bad she didn't get another unique subclass if she loose her unique paladin order.

Xoti - priest (healing is necessary, I don't like multiclassed monks because they don't get full fist progression, and if you're not punching as a monk, what are you doing?)

Well, monks can use weapons like a kensei in D&D  and priest get a specific summon weapon. Or you can make him follow the Way of 4 elements (D&d5) if you create a wizard/monk. Lot of options!

Probably going with this party.

MC: Chanter or Fighter/Chanter if I go fighter I am going to use sabres. Maybe dual wield them.

Aloth (wiz/fighter) - I want to build him as a tank, i'm wondering how well this will work.

Maia Rua (ranger/wiz) guns/nuker

Xoti (priest) ranged weapon

Serafen (barbarian/cipher) using reach 2h weapons if possible.

In my first playthrough I want to be a kind wayfarer/beckoner and I want to use companions only. (no hirelings, no sidekicks)

Aloth: single class wizard

Eder: fighter/rogue

Maia: ranger/rogue

pallagina: all options seem nice. It depends on the high level paladin talents you can have.

Serafen: barbarien (things would be different if the cipher was a soul blade.

Takehu: single class druid (my main char is a chanter and high level druid spells would be nice)

Xoti: single class priest

I will not have sidekicks in my party, but anyway

Fassina: OMG a conjurer, why should I play that

Konstanten: chanter/barbarien

Rekke: I am not sure

Ydwin: cipher/rogue

Serafen's Cipher subclass is Wild Mind. Findgamedata iirc reveals a Wild_Mind attack but not an addable wild mind ability. Maybe it has some sort of synergy with dual wielding guns?...

The name remind me of bg2 wild mage. So if let me guess, wild attack might be a spell with random result. You can use it to mimic a cipher spell in your list, and the result is from a random sheet and dice result.

That is a pretty good idea. I'm undecided between having Maia Rua as a Geomancer or Aloth as a pure Wizard in my party. Maybe I'll do as you say.

I hope I'm missing something, but I see basically zero synergy between a ranger and a wizard. I suppose one could go for a Stalker/Wizard summoned weapons and buffs melee build, though even that is probably worse than the other melee wizard combos. But that doesn't apply to Maia anyway since she's a Gunhawk, which is presumably some kind of ranged/guns focused subclass.

One trick you could do:

Use multiclassing companions early on

Switch to single class companions late game

Maia's annoying, because she specialises in something that seems to go actively against the best Geomancer build. She's built around guns, but it seems like the right way to build a Geomancer is as a melee specialist. Both summoned weapons and the pet scale with character level, so if you build into that aspect you're essentially getting a "full power" multiclass. Take the summoned weapons you want to use and buffs from wizard, and the pet passives from ranger. It things in melee with a wolf. Voila.

What about Kalakoth's Minor Blights? Probably best Wizard summoned weapon in the beta, and it's ranged. Though full game will add Llengrath's Warding Staff for multiclass....

I was assuming that Maia's passive, whatever it is, will only work with guns (given the subclass is called Gunhawk). But if it's generic ranged, yeah, that would be a good option.

Kalakoth's Minor Blights is one-handed, so you can have a gun in the off-hand and dual-wield. (Hopefully this won't be changed.)

More genereally there's some synergy between guns (or anything with reload) and summoned weapons, since summoned weapons are like an extra weapon slot. Fire first set of guns -> fire second set of guns -> fire third set of guns -> summon weapon.

I don't care much about synergy in this case. I want Tekehu, Xoti and Serafen in my party. The last spot would ideally be a Wizard, but I like Maia, so I'm considering having her as a Geomancer.

My Watcher will be a Swashbuckler, but if Maia will be bad as a Geomancer, maybe I should consider being an Assassin/Wizard and make Maia a single class Gunhawk.

One nice Ranger/Wizard synergy for casting spells---major issue with pre-casting spells (before combat starts) is low accuracy. And most self-buffs can't be applied to most pre-cast spells. But ranger gets a passive which provides an accuracy bonus against any enemy being attacked by the pet. Multiclass won't get it until level 10 though.

And while Marked Prey can't be used before pre-casting, is also an okay spell accuracy boost that stacks with it.
