Monster Hunter World review from Eurogamer, Essential (they have a weird scale)

Anyone played any Monster Hunter games? I mean, I will still be waiting 6 months before I (potentially) play it since that's the delay for the PC version, but seeing these extreme scores still piqued my interest.

Pretty weird industry where a small developer like Obsidian manages more projects at once than a massive one like Bioware. I get that the scales are different, but it sure seems like bad business to be all in like that. Do movie studios do this?

Which is why (one of the reasons, anyway) some people believe we are headed for another industry crash.

And which people are these ?

Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra

I'm one of those people who ordered the Obsidian hoodies

I have a bunch of "nerdy" clothing though

Ooooooooooooooooh those DS9 shirts... @.@

Extra Credits opened up Pandora's Lootbox, then shook it until controversy fell out.

Well in my oppinion, games should not cost more than 30USD. And I guarantee, I can put as much stuff out of my ass to support my argument, as any other guy.

Don’t get to high hopes for DA4...

Update from the kotaku article, from this morning...

UPDATE (1/25, 9:50am): The day following the publication of this article, BioWare studio head Casey Hudson confirmed that the next Dragon Age will indeed be a live game. “Reading lots of feedback regarding Dragon Age, and I think you’ll be relieved to see what the team is working on,” he wrote on Twitter. “Story & character focused. I have no hopes nor dishopes for DA4. I stopped after DA:O - Awakening.

The series lacked any draw for me after that. In fact the PC versions started looking even worse than their already unappealing console counterparts.

I wish I had stopped after Awakening.  I can still remember the excitement I felt when Dragon Age 2 was coming out; the subsequent disappointment after actually playing the game was soul crushing.

In far more important and pressing news, Monster Hunter World comes out on consoles TOMORROW:dancing:

While I still really enjoyed ME2, it had signs of the beginning of the end for me. That was the last BioWare game I played, and by the time DA2 was shown I had already tempered my anticipation. It still however managed to be disappointing.

After so many years of them being the Gods of my video game life, it was quite a pity to see them go that way.

Happened to everyone who was assimilated by EA. The moment EA bought them, I have put my money elsewhere. I was so excited for DA:O and ME games, when they were announced, but now I am happy, that I have not bought the 1st games in these series. I have saved myself serious disapointments.

Anyway. Awaiting from all of you the experience with Monster Hunter World. It is very high on my to buy list this year, but being 4th month on business trip, I have almost no access to gaming outside of few weekend days, so buying it now, would be just for collecting dust, while I am away :(

That is very bizarrely worded. The whole thing around 'rebooting' DA4 for 'live' whatever is weird. It kind of sounded like they were going to make it some kind of multiplayer game or something. Now they are backtracking trying to explain that 'rebooting' just means business and usual and nothing will be different. WTF?

It reeks of dishonesty. However until we actually see something from this game there is nothing to comment on.

Awakening, well, I thought it was the nail in the coffin for me, and then I just scoffed at DA2, but when DA:I came out, it certainly looked nice enough for me to give the series a new shot (I had a single player MMO-ish itch to scratch after the Amalur debacle), and I played it a lot, o n e   s i n g l e   p l a y t h r o u g h     and it never ended. I, of all people gave up because of severe fatigue. Yep, it was very lush and beautiful and huge, but the mechanics were very repetitive, and the story, well, slightly better than DA:O (but that's just my opinion). I didn't buy any expansions, I guess I have to pick up my saved game there, when and if I feel like installing EA's Origin or whatever it's called.

So more stuff from the next WoW expansion is being released (read: datamined) and there's so much cool stuff that I'm wondering why on earth are they marketing it as boring 'humans vs orcs' to the point of making some people incorrectly think it's a PvP expansion.

We've got one continent that's all H.P. Lovecraft Innsmouth and sea priests and witch-hags building living wickermen and another continent that's massive Mayan temples of gold except the Mayan-proxy trolls have domesticated dinosaurs, mummies and dinosaur-mummies. Baby King Anduin and the revolving door of Warchiefs can suck it, they're not close to being as cool as Kul'Tiras and Zandalar and Blizzard is seriously dropping the ball with their marketing this time.

I'm mostly worried about Star Wars. New content is already few and far between. EA isn't going to make another Star Wars MMORPG and probably not another single player RPG either.

It'll probably be around for a while yet as it appears to be one of the bigger MMOs around still.

That said the engine is a pretty big stone around the neck of that game, something that become depressingly obvious shortly after release with how slow and difficult hotfixing glaring issues turned out to be. Unless they decide to buy the engine so they can actually improve it I see the game starting to look and feel increasingly more dated especially when compared to (older) MMOs that have their own engines and actually invest in them (like WoW and Guild Wars 2)

Oh, BioWare can modify the engine, and they did, heavily so in certain parts. It's just a messed up pile of garbage that is essentially unfixable except by relplacing it - compounded by the fact that BioWare acquired it in a very early stage, but the current ones aren't that much better anyway, and IF who bought all the rights to the Hero Engine from Simutronics is in financial dire straits and has been for a while now.

And actually BioWare has done an impressive job with it. It's just not noticable because hotfixing that requires some downtime is ridiculous in this day and age, especially when compared with Blizzard who can hotfix parts of WoW on the fly. Idea Fabrik, before their problems, offered the "HeroCloud" service where licensing the Hero Engine was relatively cheap for a cut of any future profit of the game - and hosted by IF, on their servers, maintained by their engineers.

Patching something in the HeroCloud had a one week preparation requirement and always came with a downtime of at least 8 hours. And this was with the most current version of the engine, in 2015... with, uhm, 7 years after BioWare acquired the engine specifically because it was supposed to allow live game development (i.e. the option to change the game assets in real time while playing, which is why it makes for really good rapid prototyping, see TSO).

Oh and IF promised DX11 (yes, 11) support for the Hero Engine years ago. As of mid-2017 it was still... on the roadmap. Go figure. :)

No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
