drama queens

I wonder, you always hear about the drama queen, yet we never hear about the drama king.  Where is he?  Has he passed on? Is he having a secret affair with the duchess of comedy?

I think he got turned into a llama by a witch who found toads too cliche.

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

I think the question is how will Beamdog manage to make NWN worse?

According to the first online Dictionary I googled:

drama king
noun
informal

noun: drama king; plural noun: drama kings
  1. a male individual who habitually responds to situations in a melodramatic way, e.g., Donald Trump

I can't tell if that's supposed to be the enhanced edition in the video or just the old one.

Me neither.  That's how you know it has the Beamdog Minimal Effort Seal of Quality!  :shifty:

Beamdog Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition

Yuck.

Mildly put.

Good remasters are always welcome. I want to be able to play oldie goldies on Win 10/Linux.

gog.com

I didn't remember if I've tried the gog version on Win 10 yet, but I downloaded it and did so; Had no issues.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

NWN > ALL

Until Beamdog makes it worse.

Make an 'enhanced' eidition but won't bother to add feats, spells, skills, and classes from NWN2 or other fortmers that would actually make the game even more awsomesauce than it already is.

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Yeah, this will have a huge impact on upgrading persistent worlds and multiplayer using machines and screen resolutions from this decade.

At that, a number of original NWN1 devs are working at Beamdog now - this is another team, not the same as for BG/IWD EE, for instance.

Plus a number of modders I have great respect for take part in this undertaking as active consultants.

Even if they aren't technically "gambling" they are incredibly anti-consumer.

Like, I get that free-economies need to encourage wealthy people to be more frivolous, but I don't think that's what is going on here. There are some whales sure, it's mostly preying on the short-sighteness of young people who waste away their parents money, all while ruining the aspects of a game that make it worth while playing on it's own merits.

And break it like they did with BG1? Nah, as long as Beamdog's promise of mods remaining compatible stays true, this is precisely what we need - a re-released of a dated game that works properly and will work properly on future machines.

i HOPE, they will make the Multiplayer part work again and support it. It IS the best part of the game - to create large persistent worlds with tons of extra content and live DMs running the show.

This is still the best non-esport MP game out there. better than any MMO

As for the lootboxes, any game that has built in transactions should be using a credit card verification system and be adult only - period. there are limits to how far revenue predatory should be allowed. You want people to pay you extras, make sure those are the people that actually earn money.

A study requested by the National Lottery was released by the University of Leuven (also in Belgium) where the effects of the amount of gambling (and gambling promotion, by advertisements, television, etc.) children (10+) are exposed to was researched. The conclusion is pretty damning.

Article (in Dutch)

They state that the result of a questionnaire filled in by 645 children is such that they consider many of them are at serious risk of "developing problematic gambling related behaviour at a later age". They also talked to the parents and most of those have no idea what's going on (shocker, I'm sure)

Big part of the article talks about casino games (which 1/3 of the kids 10-12 had already played in some form, either with family or online) and the gambling by the national lottery. I'll focus on the gaming related stuff though.

One of the things apologists of the lootbox system always bring up is that in many cases these only contain appearance related items. This is explicitly addressed by the study:

"Gambling elements are nowadays common in video games where they can help players progress faster or give them special visual appearance."

I would not be surprised if Minister of Justice Geens already had access to the study or its results before it was published. He's as far as I can tell not the type of guy to make broad statements just to score which doesn't mean he 100% understood what is going on here, he doesn't strike me as much of a gamer.

Indie developers are leaving Steam in droves, because Steam with Steam Direct put the term Shovelware to the whole new level. It is even worse than Greenlight. In 11 months, they approved more than 6000 asset flips to their catalogues (that's more than 2005-2015 combined).

According to some indie developers, the store is so much saturated, that even the more successful of them in past, are currently struggling to keep afloat and are pursuing other distribution means, most notably Switch.
