How do you guys fill your 4 backpack slots in terms of consumables? I didn't use these slots at all, because I was busy buying gear, but now I have a huge surplus - not to mention big boss fights coming - I want to get an idea of how these slots are best utilized.

To begin with, is food ever needed expect the really difficult boss fights? And which food? I assume the highest quality Dragon food for the boss fights, but they are obviously expensive so kind of limited - even with my treasury! ;)

Next, potions. I guess I am going to use either Endurance or Regeneration potion for 1 slot for heals, but then what? I think someone mentioned that Recovery potions are needed for tough fights, but aren't you already often disabled when you get afflictions? Or do you use these potions as a preventative measure?

Then the scrolls. I read Petrify (or was it Paralyze?) scrolls are useful against Dragons. What else come handy?

Finally, trinkets - especially summonable trinkets. Are these ever really needed?

Anyways, really look forward to hearing how to use the backpack slots. 4 slots are really not that much unfortunately - so I want to know how to best optimize here.

It depends. Four slots across six characters is a lot, if you think of it that way. My front line fighters usually have at least an Endurance potion and a couple of other buffs like Movement or ACC boosts. Maybe a summons, but not usually. Oh and a Resist Elements potion if I don't have a druid handy. It is nice to spread out Revive scrolls to other high Lore characters in case the Priest goes down. My range characters will usually have the Summons items.

But really, the larger my party the less I use the item slots, except for my Rogues or other high mechanics characters who always have traps loaded. I love traps, even though they are severely gimped these days (traps in this game need to really be fixed, really.). I just can't shake old habits from other CRPGs.

Smaller parties I feel like I tend to use each character more fully. I'm trying my first (true) solo game right now and I am about to give into a Deep Pockets selection even though I usually feel like that is a waste of an upgrade. My last 3 and 4 party runs one character always had Deep Pockets, though.

I use food tons on PotD or small party runs. Usually only the ones that boost an attribute by 2 or boost DR.

In my last run, at some point I felt like I had a ton of dragon meat, I'm not sure how. Maybe I kept buying it whenever I came across it in the later game and money was less of a problem.

I don't know. All those things that hide in the task bar I keep forgetting about in larger party games. Too much to keep track of or out of sight out of mind. Something like that.

Are Endurance potions preferable to Regeneration potions? What about Recovery potions?

Each of those potions do differing things. Endurance is a one-shot boost. Regeneration is for ongoing Endurance healing and is usually best against low damage opponents or in concert with the Survival camping benefit of Health Recovery. But TBH, I am not up on the mechanics of health recovery, regeneration, and similar effects like Veteran's Recovery.

I think Recovery potions reduce the time it takes to overcome disabling FX like Confusion, Stuck, etc. I almost never use them. I probably should!

Yes - potions of recovery are really useful. Especially solo they saved my butt several times against those pesky Andragans and Lagufaeth.

I have to admit that I only use food, drugs and potions when soloing.

The game just straight up makes potions, especially, too difficult to use. You can only use them in Combat mode and even then you are usually too easily interrupted when imbibing, What's worse is then you have to make your character retry! Why? Why isn't it still in my character's cue to do?

It's as bad as when the game makes your character stop running when you have auto-pause set for Enemy Spotted and Combat Start.

So many annoying little things for an otherwise excellent game.

Food is indeed needed if you solo bosses, especially in order to push the damage coefficient of your DoTs further.

But tbh I like using it even in a 6 man party. I've found sugar and have more than 3? I will toss one on my MC. Some extra DR/MIG/INT/etc food? I'll consume it too.

During the first run I was hoarding all this stuff, and in the end haven't used even 1/4 of the food stocked in my inventory. So I've taken notes.

Also a note regarding drugs: imho, nowadays drugs are pretty bad, perhaps with the exception of Mind Grubs + Whiteleaf combo, if you don't mind the -10% attack speed penalty.

- priest + 2 characters that have Scrolls of Revival - is almost a fool-proof guarantee vs potential wipes from spike damage

- 1 character (with high INT/MIG) with moonwell scrolls

- 2 characters (with high INT/PER) with scrolls of Confusion/Paralysis

- (optional) a support character (with high INT) with scrolls of Valor/Defense/Protection

- (optional) a character (with high MIG/INT) with scrolls of Boiling Spray

- (optional) prayer scrolls

- (optional) a priest with scrolls of Insect Swarm

As for potions, it depends on do I have a 6-man party or solo; as well what is the concrete situation. Mostly I use:

- Potion of Major Recovery, Potion of Major Endurance and ofc Potion of Deleterious Alacrity of Motion. Also there is Flask of War Paint.

Also Potion of Bulwark Against The Elements/Potion of Flame Shield are quite handy vs shades and spectres; and Potion of Llengrath's Displaced Image is great for pushing tank's defenses even further.

Thanks so much for all this info! And yes, I've found after my first full run that there was a lot of stuff I hoarded and rotted. In particular, I also found the drugs not worth keeping (just as in real-life, LOL!).

Regarding tank defenses: What kind of Deflection and Defense numbers do I need in general for level 16 at Hard difficulty (which is what I am trying next)?

You'll need the same defences for hard as you did for normal. The enemies don't have higher accuracy, there are just more of them and occasionally better variants of them (elder lions rather than lions). Most importantly, the toughest enemies (dragons etc.) remain unchanged from normal to hard.

Only PotD actually buffs enemy stats directly.

Got it - so more adds, that's all, for boss fights.

I believe so yes. The adds might also be tougher variants of their kind, for example if the Alpine Dragon has a mixture of ice blights and greater ice blights defending it on normal, it might only have greater ice blights on hard. I can't really comment on specifics though since I gave up my first normal run because it started getting too easy so I've only ever fought bosses on hard and PotD.

If you're looking for a challenge for your next run, and don't want to use PotD, I'd recommend trying a smaller party e.g. only take four characters rather than six. You'll probably be disappointed if you expect hard to pose much more of a challenge than normal did.

I like to go progressively harder. (Damn, that looks like something out of a porn movie or a sex manual, LOL!) So I will try hard first with a normal party, and then slim down on the party number next.
