Hey I recalled on one of the Q&A's somebody brought up bashing. The issue was with the negligible damage and JS said something to the effect of 'we want to tweak bashing but we still want to diminish the offense/defense tradeoff of shields'. I figured I'd offer up the idea of shield attacks remaining low damage but hit with high accuracy and potent interrupt. That keeps the damage/defense tradeoff while granting decent utility to the trait. I also thought bashing could work as a great 'specialization' modal with a dps/utility tradeoff. I feel like it ties in well with the low damage interrupt builds - especially the barbarian.

What are your guys' thoughts?

There's a thread here that dove into that question at length and OBS already noticed. Josh mentioned this discussion in the last stream. Would be better to use that thread I guess in order to have all arguments and points in one place:

I don't think there should be a significant tradeoff for the defensive bonuses of shields. If you go strictly for any type of combat, a sword and a shield is a superior setup against a single one-handed sword 100% of the time, no matter the circumstances. I think this is one of those futile searches of equality where it is not warranted. A one-handed weapon and a shield isn't simply different from only having a one-handed, it's better, and I don't think pretending otherwise is beneficial to the game in any way. If you want viable "duelist" options, create a character progression path for that fighting style or something, but just like being unarmed is simply inferior to wielding a weapon, not having a shield with that weapon is inferior to having one.

The most important step you take in your life is the next one.
