I just read that Mass Effect Andromeda will have full nudity and full on soft core porn. How's that for romance? Obsidian really doesn't want to run that arms race, I'll say that now

You mean when the GM made a joke and some crazy places on the internet decided to take it out of context?

Yes, Mass Effect Andromeda will have nudity, as many AAA games have now, it's because games as a media can now contain nudity without causing a panic. Nudity doesn't mean that the romance is valueless, instead we don't run into extremely awkward scenes of people showering in their underwear.

Ashley, apparently just talking to people is enough to get people wanting my Shepard-meat, had to Virmire her to keep her off me.  Same thing happened with Liara too in another playthrough, and since you can't Virmire her she ended up in my cabin even though I had already pretty much told her to bugger off outside the lockers and only just managed to avoid being forced to feed her my meat, and even then the game considered that I had 'romanced' her...

Mass Effect 1 only kind of ninjamances you. Sure, the default state if you talk to them every mission is romance, but there are multiple opportunities for you to express your lack of interest. The only problems with it in Mass Effect 1 (incidentally this is solved in the later games) is that it never explicitly tells you when you should say you aren't interested and it assumes that you are interested if you never say anything. Based off what we know from the reputation system it will be a lot more visible than in Mass Effect.

Quite often it meant being outright mean to them.  Not being mean to someone shouldn't really equate to romance in my mind, but maybe I'm just picky...

Weird. Ive never played ME but a quick Google search provides: How to avoid all romantic relationships in mass effect 3? There you go!

Ah, but that's for the third one!  They were trying to rape me in Mass Effect 1.

What are you talking about?

This tweet: https://twitter.com/AarynFlynn/status/835722814376259584

Long story short it's him saying that ME:A will have nudity in the form of a long running joke (that Mass Effect is all about space sex). What some websites did is then take the quote out of context to try and either mislead people for an agenda and/or clickbait people.

Hi everyone,

It has come to my attention that there is some concern about romance ... well more the tendency to sometimes making posting choices that are neither in line with the Forum Guidelines or generally constructive/civil. I will leave hopeful my visit from the Roost is enough to ensure all shall be well ... as I really do like doing nothing ...

See, there have only ever been two romances in gaming that I've enjoyed. One was a mod, and the other had me date a pidgeon. It wass beautiful

Hatofuru boyfriend?

Btw, I've been thinking: Can Ciphers read minds? Wouldn't that make for awkward moments in terms of romance?

Ydwin:

Watcher, I've finished scouting out the area, and... you pig!

Watcher:

What! I haven't even said anything to you yet.

Ydwin:

Yeah, but you were thinking it.

Watcher:

Oh, yeah! You're a Cipher!

Watcher:

Look, Lets just get on with this, ok?

(Bonus points if you know the reference)

To help get this thread back on track a bit, how about describing how your personal idea of how a good video game romance subplot would go? With any of the companions or a hypothetical character. (And please lets resist the temptation to roll our eyes at each other, at least in the thread)

Personally, I feel romance in video-games are completely one-sided. Every romance subplot revolves around whatever baggage the love-interest has, with you fixing it like some quest. Romance really is the perfect opportunity to learn more about YOUR character as well.

Talk a bit, have a few laughs together (weird how player character usually never laughs), have philosophical discussions were you DON'T have to go with whatever they say like a lyrebird to advance the romance.

Another thing I should mention, is how relationships are constructed. The biggest gripe I have is how you finish a quest, click on the companion to talk to them, learn a bit of baggage until they tell you to "wait a bit before talking more", do another quest, rinse repeat. Even in Tyranny (a game I really loved!) most character interaction revolved around asking them questions for half an hour until all options were exhausted. It felt more like reading a book instead of getting to know my companions.

I liked how in BG2 the romance (or character interactions in general) proceeded at it's own pace. There was no "click to loveydovey". Happen upon a statue, and you may get into a conversation of history; walk through a graveyard, tell each other horror stories. This way getting to know your companion (romance or no) feels more genuine, and less like "ask 20 questions".

But I digress.

Ok, this is going to sound bizarre, but there is one romance option that most people on here might be intrested in: The Imoen Romance Mod for BG2. Yes yes, it did come the very infamous effed up one that made the rounds years ago, but it got completely reworked in 2015. A huge amount of content that adds to the story, rather than taking away or dominating it like most mod npcs do. The story can take, like, a bajillion different routes depending on whether you aren't interested, gender, how you view your relationship with Imoen, and if you break it off. Hell, it even does away with the whole incest angle. Extremely great mod, just hard to recommend without people thinking you're a pervy lunatic
