Unique BACKER related Issue, Need Some Help Here

shingouki

Question

So recently I went to a thrift shop to purchase some things for my house, and I stumbled upon some games and dvds. One of the things in the pile happened to be a sealed version of Pillars of Eternity being sold for cheap. I figured it was probably just a retail copy someone sold to the thrift shop that they didn't want for whatever reason, so I decided to pick it up. It was cheaper than the current retail version, so I took it home.

I opened it up, and was surprised it actually had DVDs instead of the usual steam code in games today. But I figured maybe this game was unique. So I installed it, and ran the game. I noticed the game weirdly didn't have a PC logo or ESRB rating, but I didn't make a big deal about it. Anyway after I installed it I realized that there was a Small Obsidian Wurm in my inventory...which seemed like the kind of item you'd give in a promotional version of a game. So I looked into it and found out that this was a feature inside backer copies of the game...which made me realize I had just purchase a backer copy of POE.

The weird thing though is that it was sealed...and I just have this nagging feeling that it wasn't put there voluntarily. So I just feel bad. Is there any way I would be able to identify whose backer copy this is and return it to them in the situation where it was stolen? I know I paid for the game, and I DO want to play it, but I know how it feels to have something stolen from you that has sentimental value, and I wouldn't have a problem returning it to the rightful owner.

No, they are neither counted nor connected to the individual backer.

A bigger problem is how to get the current patch with a backer version and no backer account. If you play on Linux you could use the unofficial patches. Nope, the dvd contains 1.02 and the unofficial dvd patches start at 1.04

@SKing any idea?

So I guess it can't be returned to the owner and is mine now. Sucks, but I guess I can live with that.

Are you sure about the DVD starting at 1.02? With no investigation and pure memory, I'm pretty sure we released our DVD at 1.04.

I actually managed to upgrade all the way to 2.0 . There's a page on the site that allows you to do the DVD backer upgrade up to 2.0 or so.

But the problem i currently have is I don't have any way to get access to the White March DLC update or patches at all, and I dont have a Steam code or anything, so there's that.

We should have a DVD 3.03 DLC download available for purchase soon.

Do you know when that might be? Just out of curiousity. I'd love to get to play White March!

Also, for those who do have White March, am I missing out on a lot of content from 2.03 to the current release? For example, should I wait for White March to release before I start playing the game seriously?

Some people insist on waiting for the final final final patch to play, and are loathe to miss out on even small improvements and fixes. If you are not like that, then I wouldn't say there's a huge problem.

White March itself is accessed as a stand-alone set of areas and quests, for the most part, about halfway through the game.

Alright this is pretty great, I have the DVD version and I'm really into Pillars (30+ Hrs) so I want to buy White March.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM THO:

When I go to the page to get the DLC, it says I have to have purchased it to download it (for the DVD version). At the same time, the Obsidian site to buy White March says that buying it will give me a Steam copy of the game... My guess is, if I buy the game via Obsidian store, I wont get the game download because I dont have a backer account.

So, here's my worry: I dont want to buy White March, and then I can't actually play it because I dont have a steam version of PoE. At the same time I also wouldn't have access to the DVD version, huge bummers all around if that does happen.

So before I buy, can I verify that if I buy White March from the store, I can get a DVD version download to play the game? I'll buy it right now if that's the case. Please let me know!

You cannot apply the Steam expansion to the DVD version of the game. Sorry this edge case is something we did not consider. :(. I'll ask my producers and see what we can do for you.

If you could that would be super great, and I'd really appreciate it. I really like this game and the work you guys did on it so I just want to play more of it and support you guys.

Thanks for all of your support so far!

I'm having the same problem.  Had my physical reward DVD shipped to a friend's business, just finally picked it up from him this week. I'm patching to 3.03 as we speak, but want to install The White March first.  I'm not sure how to get The White March, because I have a physical DVD copy from the Kickstarter.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Instructions,

After installing the 3.03 patch, please visit your Products page (Backer Portal Link) to download the White March installer. Please note that the download is only available there for those who purchased it. If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to shout.
