SW: The Old Republic - Episode VIII (May RNG Be With You)

I still can't believe they have Galactic Starfighter and Galactic Strongholds listed as expansions. When I was reading an article and it said this was going to be the game's 7th expansion I was like wait, what?

Galactic Starfighter at least was additional content. Strongholds was... yeah. A good way to teleport between planets and the fleet before they changted the fleet teleport cooldown. :p

KK: "we are developing something" related to KotOR

Guess Disney did tell EA to get off their asses and take SWTOR out maintenance mode to build hype for whatever they have prepared.

Otherwise it's hard to understand why they are suddenly investing on modernizing the engine and tools, developing new content and adding long requested features after it took them a year and a half to make a single raid.

Wasn't that supposed to be a TV show?

I'd be more excited if Disney's track record with Star Wars wasn't "meh" at best and video game film adaptations weren't terrible on average. :p

Dude, their current team of skellies cannot launch a wee patch without breaking something, don't expect them to come up with something like Hutt expansion.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel only had Makeb and Scum & Villainy (unless you count that instanced "world" boss as content). Very fun additions to the game, but not large.

Makeb had two storylines for each faction, the new expansion has no story. For me, story is very much content, way more important than, say, operations.

Hey, don't knock my Temples of Subtletly and Good Taste! Too bad I cannot show off my decoratin' madskillz because the latest patch broke all decos.

Keanu Revan. I'd sell a good portion of my collection of souls for that movie.

No, no, NO! #notmyrevan!  My Revan is, a) a girl, b) looks like Vasquez from "Aliens".   :alienani:  But then I successfully ignored that perma-stubbled Blandy McBlando in SWTOR, I could easily do the same to whatever dishwater offered by Disney, if I bother watching it at all.

  • 3 months later...

Getting back into TOR after a break for a couple of years.  A bit of back and forth trying to remember how to play my classes. Creating a couple of new characters to mess around with and see how it's changed.

I have to admit, crafting seems much more useless now, especially for a solo player.  At the lower scale you're levelling up so fast there's no time to really craft mods, enhancements, etc because you'll already be above them and onto the next stage of gear. At higher levels, you're getting better gear handed out as rewards then you can craft, or the recipes that are better require you to grind Ops or spend silly money on the trade network to get the materials.

And seeing people put stuff on the Trading Network for 20+million credits still makes me blink. I grind through heroics and barely make a single million.

Grinding through heroics is no longer a time-effective way to make credits, especially since they fixed the bug that multiplied credits earned by the number of people in your party.

If you want to make some decent money, you need to get in a guild that consistently achieves the goal for large planet conquest and hit your personal cap with as many characters as you can (within the guild). That way you get 1-4 "Charged Matter Transubstantiators" per week and character, which sell for about half a million a piece. Those are used to craft 236/240 augments, but unless you intend to do NiM raids or serious PVP, don't bother.

However, I'd advise against doing any grinding at this point. A lot of things are going to change come September -assuming the expansion drops as planned- and that includes gear and crafting. In general it's not looking so good, if you listen to test server feedback.

I'm slowly working my way through KOTFE and then hopefully through KOTET on a newish Chiss Sorc. I wanted to optimize my story to my liking even if 4 9s of it has no effect in the grand scheme of things. I'm done with chapter 15 and still need to do most of the Star Fortresses which I want to have done before taking on the last chapter, but...

So who is actually still playing on the Star Forge server these days?

I've got about 15 toons currently there.  Although about 6 of them are new ones I've started up in the last month as I try to remember how to play it all. 😄

I found my republic side toons are still in a guild, and I've become the guild leader..but every other person in that guild hasn't been online in over 2 years now.

My active (well, for given definition of "active". Right now I cannot muster enough enthusiasm to even decorate with stuff I won during the latest casino event, but I'll check that new expansion just to visit Onderon) ones are on Satele Shan, but I have presence on the Forge as well.

Did get my first eight toon's all up to 60 now. Only have the Sith Inquisitor at 70, but then again, he was the only one who'd gone through all the Alliance stuff.  Need to poke at the post-Alliance story stuff now with him.

Anyway, on the Star Forge server I have:

On the Republic Side -

  • Ehtiar - a 60 Jedi Knight Sentinel
  • Khalayla - a 65 Jedi Sage
  • Dhar - a 62 Gunslinger
  • Drakhus - a 61 Commando

And on the Imperial Side -

  • Drayke - a 70 Sith Assassin
  • Khaelehn - a 64 Sith Juggernaut
  • Nyxus - a 60th Operative
  • Khayul - a 61 Mercenary

  • 2 weeks later...

Now, I know they're running a lengthy "double xp" thing before the big September expansion.. But jeez, my new Jedi Knight just hit level 50 before finishing Act 1....

You can negate the XP boost from the event by using a "White Acute Module" which you can purchase from the Gree vendor in the Combat Training area on the fleet. Not that it'll do you much good now that the event ends in two days, but you can keep the item for when it comes back around, and pass it along to alts as it's legacy-bound.

Is the overcapping from doing sidequests? I remember doing a double XP Inquisitor run some time back and by just doing story quests, I ended up barely above the level curve, maybe 2-3 levels over by level 40. Then the double XP ran out and I ran into a brick wall, having absolutely no desire to do sidequests to keep up.

I do every quest. I don't repeat heroics or grind mobs, at least until I'm at the cap for alliance crates and command levels, but I've never been able to skip content. I should probably clarify, I don't skip content that's not gated by Ops and/or PVP.

I play MMOs like ever expanding single player games.

E: come to think of it, I think that's why I never got into WOW. My friends wanted to rush to the end game and I wanted to explore the maps and read the story, at least the first time through, and do all the quests. That's how I ended up in LOTRO, I wanted a game that was more about the journey.

I'm weird that way

I did all the sidequests in my first run as Smuggler way back when, and have now filed them under "never again". I also lost the use of the Smuggler because I lost my name when the Aussie servers shut down and refuse to play a pale imitation of myself. I'm weird that way.

There really is no excuse for Star Wars, a series where just about everyone has last names, to not allow people to share first names. 😐

It was changed some time ago, no? Now you can have Name Surname with a space between them like a normal person so it should be easier to come up with a name you like.

(And yet, Tom Kittenberg I wanted for my Cathar trooper was taken. :getlost:)

If you stick to just your class missions and do nothing else, while also not using XP boost items, you'll remain more or less on-level with the story.

Otherwise, if you do the planetary arcs, a bit of PVP, heroics or even the old flashpoints at the points they were intended in the story, you'll be overleveled.

has been a while since we played, but while our default for any game is to be completionist, tor cured us o' the urge. recognizing how esseles and black talon runs to achieve 50 influence with at least one companion were so much more efficient than completionist, or any other approach we has seen, our new tor default is to pretty much abandoned anything save critical path story until reaching new content.

has it become much cheaper to buy influence via gifts?  if not, then am likely to once again do esseles and black talon to start.

is balance/madness and telekinetic/lightning sages/sorcs still the worst dps options?  maybe the expansion makes dps sages/sorcs and dps vanguard/powertech less terrible?

am thinking o' subscribing for a month to get the new expansion and see what is new since we stopped circa 2016. am recollecting we got one 70 and a whole bunch o' 65s... command exp and random endgame 1007 were our personal tor breaking point. pretty much stopped playing immediate after hitting 70 on one character. nevertheless, am thinking we will create one new character and do esseles and black talon to death, though chances are good we have forgotten how to play.

we do have a bit o' time to play games nowadays, which is nice. honest don't have many games we wanna play, so am gonna give tor another chance, for at least a bit.

HA! Good Fun!
