Watched ''The Revenant'', didn't like it. Don't get me wrong, the film was very well made, the acting was very good too, it simply completely and utterly failed to entertain me.

For me, it was one of the least entertaining films I've ever seen.

It felt like one of those pointless dramas Clint Eastwood churns out every now and then.

''The edge'' was a better film.

True, it was obviously made more from a technical point of view - sort of like extreme heavy lifting, not that interesting for the average laymen other than the obvious physical feat, but an impressive technical achievement. More done to say "I could"...

What was I doing today? Netflix arrived into Czech Republic and I was so excited that I immediately subscribed to the best quality subscription for the free month (not that I actually need UHD, but eh.) And my excitement was quickly replaced by disappointment when I saw what they're offering over here: About 700 videos of which about 550 are movies and 200 TV series. So I looked at US stats. Yup, over 5000 videos, over 4000 movies and 1000 TV series. But that's US, surely, rest of Europe is as screwed as we are. So... Germany? about 1800 videos. *sigh* Naturally, we pay for our selection precisely the same price as US users pay for theirs.

But surely, the reason why Netflix took so long to spread to the rest of the world was localization, right? It would be stupid to push such a service into a multicultural environment without that! .... Oh. Apparently, it wouldn't. My wife can't speak english nearly as well as I can, so we watch movies/TV series with localized subtitles. Netflix didn't even offer that.

All right, fair enough, at least it's going to be the best place to watch Netflix content, right? Okay, I chose highest quality and started watching supposedly HD Daredevil to make a comparison with my HD copy. Netflix is the upper screen, HD video the lower one.

Okay. I don't think I'm subbing to Netflix.

(oh, and then there's the story about Media Foundation Protected EXE when Netflix is launched via IE)

If it makes you feel any better, streaming quality (both video and audio) is pretty awful in the U.S., too. Too bad about the rest of that stuff. :p

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Leaving for Vegas tomorrow for four days. Wonder what it would cost me to upgrade my room to a jacuzzi suite... :dancing:

Where are you staying?  I'm not going to stalk you, promise. :p  I'm going in April and I've been trying to figure out where to stay.  Right now I have Vdara booked.

We are staying at the Monte Carlo. Not the newest hotel on the strip my any means but its within walking distance to some bars we like. Too bad our schedules didnt jive, it would have been cool for my wife and I to have dinner/drinks with you and yours.

If you haven't been to the Luxor yet, its pretty neat. Even if nothing more than going inside and riding the "inclinators" (diagonal travelling elevators). Yes, I'm easily amused.

I'm planning on making my first trip to the Luxor this trip to see Carrot Top, so I'll make sure to ride them.  I just read a book about the building of the Luxor, actually, so my interest is piqued.  I hear it is a bit of a dump to stay at though.

I've looked at those jacuzzi rooms at the Monte Carlo too. :D  I think I'm making the switch to M Life properties after sticking with Caesars for the last few years.  They seem to be a bit nicer.

Monte Carlo has a chocolate workshop during the week, you take a 2 hour class with a pastry chef and make stuff.  Looks like a pretty cool thing, I've been thinking about booking it.

I tend to rate Vegas by their cardrooms. Some of my favorites...

Binions. Home to the original Horseshoe Casino and the original World Series of Poker. They got their Poker Wall of Fame. LEGEND.

The Mirage. Used to be THE Destination. More sentimental than anything else now. My first legal age poker cardroom. Cache Creek doesn't count when I can get in with no problems after midterms from Davis.

The Bellagio. The gold standard. Maybe when I win Powerball, I'll sit down at their super exclusive hi-stakes games.

RIO. Home of the WSOP. Too hyped for my tastes but lots of good touristy fish.

Yeah, I'm too much of a wuss to do any serious gambling.  I always budget around $400 for gambling, but then freak out when I'm down $100 and give up.  I also cash out super quick when I get up by a little bit, so I pretty much never spend much time at the tables.

That's alright though, Vegas has way more to offer.  :p

Netflix was pretty sparse when it launched in Canada too. Not that I minded. 700 movies and 100 tv series was enough to keep me going for a few months, and by the time I had watched everything I wanted from launch they had added like 600 new titles. Canadians are whiners. "Wah, more movies and tv than I can watch in a year for the price of one HD on demand rental per month, but theres 300 less titles than the US so I feel ripped off"

When I first started at the cardrooms and didn't know any better, I had a stop-loss strategy where if I am up or lose a certain pre-determined threshold, I would just get up and leave. But as you gain experience and get better, the optimal strategy would be to just keep on going as long as the game is good. Definition of good being, you aren't about to pass out and there's plenty of fish/meat at the table. Being a poker regular is a grind.

Even pros can get hit by luck or chance and lose a bunch of money. That's what makes poker so fun and fresh, especially with new players rotating in-- there's always the belief that "I'm gonna get lucky!" Because you know what, there's that 1/4 odds that you're gonna hit that flush on the river!

I went to see a Cirque show once years ago. It was the one with the Beatles. Really enjoyed it, but disappointed by the lack of clowns.

Updated my survival what-if-backpack. Weighs in at a nice 21 kilograms (w/o water). Includes emergency food for 10 days, shelter, multiple fire starter systems , first aid kit, spare clothes, sleeping bag, backpack, ammunition, a machete, cord, a net, a good knife, a 2-man tent, compass, wet weather protection, flashlights, gun cleaning kit + essential spare parts, hygiene articles, a water filter system, a steel pot + cutlery, a flask of blackpowder, survival book (in case I lose my memory lol) etc.

Its nice to have a little worst case scenario insurance, but it needs maintenance and updates to stay effective.

My only advice is no free dinner is good enough to justify the irritation of listening to a time share pitch. I told that guy I was in bankruptcy and under indictment in three states and he still kept going!

Hah, we did the timeshare thing one time, I think we got a free lunch and $100 gift card out of it.  I had zero interest, but my wife was ready to sign.  I have an RV, why would I possibly want a timeshare?  The guy looked like he was going to hang himself at the end.  I also like that the 'free shuttle' was no longer available to take us back to our hotel at the end!

We got an Amazon Echo for Christmas and I just started looking at all the stuff you can connect it to and it is not cheap. Lights, locks, thermostat it can control them all but I don't think I'm willing to pay for it all since the stuff I currently have works fine... Maybe when it's time to replace those items or if my wife cared more but I have a hard time spending money on stuff that only I want or am interested in.

PS I really want to go back to Vegas but my wife got bit by the gambling bug the last day or so we were there last time so I'm afraid to go back. She lost 100 on the penny slots. Penny slots!

Penny slots is really a misnomer.  If you select all the lines, they are typically running you about a quarter per spin.  $100 will go fast at that rate.  My wife won about $80 on a Lord of the Rings machine a couple years ago, the fun part was they played video clips and gave you some choices to make while you played.

But yeah, slots have the worst odds in the casino according to the math.  Still it is hard to resist the idea of a big win on one spin.   :wowey:

Were they progressives? And if so, gotta always MAXIMIZE the s***t out of each bet! Otherwise expected value of ROI goes down.

Slots are a losing proposition. They only gambling you have half a shot at is blackjack, Unless of course you play poker then you will do as well as your competition permits. But with Blackjack if you follow a conservative strategy and remember this on key fact: in a 52 card deck 20 cards are worth 10, you will probably do ok. Don't hit on 14 or better if the dealer is showing a 10 card. If they have 20 you're screwed anyway. Play for the bust.

Last time I was there I played $10 hand for 2 hours. I sat down with $200 and left with somehere around $320. I didn't get rich but that more than covered my drinks that night.
