Most of you probably know this already but it does several talking points. Two I find interesting are

  • There is a societal stigma about HIV people where there is this assumption that its a death sentence. Nowadays with the right medication this should be seen as a chronic illness..so its not the end of the your life. I do believe in full disclosure and I support people who are are honest about there HIV status
  • If you read the article you will see how Sheen was blackmailed for years...what type of person would blackmail someone over this? Reprehensible at best

How does this change your view of Sheen if at all?

"Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss”

John Milton

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -  George Bernard Shaw

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead" - Nelson Mandela

The stigma is due to how it is caught and spread.  There is the implication that if you caught HIV that you are a sexually active and 'loose' individual which may not be true but is how it is due to the method of transmission and the first groups of people it struck when it was spread to the west.  There is always the fear of catching it from people with it too, a sense of 'Unclean!' that surrounds them, and people who are known to have it find it hard to get laid even with protection (something I'm sure is important to Charlie considering his reputation).  People will always try to blackmail celebrities for money, if it's not over their medical condition then it's about their sexual orientation, money always brings out the worse in people.

Of course, Sheen is now facing stigma because a bunch of his old girlfriends are coming out in the "Holy Crap, he had this, didn't warn me and still screwed me without proper protection!" and are planning on suing his ass off.

That and the possibilities of criminal charges due to Californian law if you're HIV positive and don't warn people, it gets classes as criminal assault or some such.

So, that's a whole nother side of the issue.

What type of person would blackmail anyone over anything? There are bad people out there.

As for what happened to Charlie Sheen, well acting irresponsibly often leads to unfortunate results. Now if he did have sex with people who did not know then he does deserve to be sued out of existence because that makes him the biggest scumbag of them all. Yes HIV is not the automatic death sentence it once was but it is still a permanent injury. If he is deliberately risking the lives and health of others then f--k him.

Sure, I agree with this and other views

Which is why I said " I believe in full disclosure ". So if he wasn't honest about his status and then had sex, either protected or unprotected, then he will face some sort of criminal charges ..and that's how it should be

He said he revealed the diagnosis to people he thought he trusted, but some of them demanded money to keep the information to themselves. [...]

Asked if he would continue to pay the people he'd been paying, he said: "Not after today, I'm not."

Some reporters ask the stupidest questions.

"Now that you have publicly revealed your secret, will you continue to pay blackmailers who threaten to reveal your secret unless you pay them?"

It's that vital and all important aspect of "celebrity gossip" that balances out the "war war fear terror blood economic crash news" that we get bombarded with.

Yeah its nice to have a break from the craziness....like discussing Islamic extremism

I enjoy politics and global events discussions, but its also good to have an innocuous break...like this thread  :geek:
