The only quest I havent done is Raedrics but isnt that better to do at a higher level? Honestly this fight is total bull**** with fighting in a small room vs insta kill fan of flames excluding the ****ing fire immune fire blights zzzz

Have you cleared every map that you can reach besides Readric and Maerwald?

Can you kill the rest of the map and level up? One more level will make a big difference. Even just starting Raedric and doing some should get you to fifth level.

If you prefer not to do the Raedric quest and level up, you can deal with Maerwald by kiting the other mobs on that level to him. I did a POTD solo wizard and definitely couldn't take him in a fair fight even with an extra level. What I did was to open his southern door first (I had sufficient Mechanic skill) and then pull him into the south room. Then I would run away to the west and pull the beetles in the next room to him. You get more margin for error if you have Fast Runner or Fleet Feet, but it's possible even without them. The beetles basically wipe out Maerwald and his blights, and the beetles are also trimmed down to size. You can then mop up the remaining mobs.

Just pull out of the room and create a bottleneck elsewhere against the spirits. Remember what Sun Tzu's book said and pick your location carefully, where you are strong but the enemy is weak.

Also stay away from Fire attacks if you can help it.

I did the Maewald fight with a low level party, without doing any of the side content quests before. Just straight from the town to the fortress and past it.

For this fight, rogue might want to go shortbow and start interrupting Maer. As you then do a running retreat using kana's speed buff.

If you are playing PoTD enemyt stats are higher.  It in my opinion mandatory to have a debuffer who lowers those defenses.  You need to get the dice lob sided on your side.  That means having a Wizard, Druid or Cipher.  You have Aloth.  increase his accuracy with your priest or take the Eldritch Aim Spell (or potion) .  Also if your upgrade your priests holy radiance to give accuracy it stacks with other accuracy buffs.  Grab CC spells like Slicken, Chill Fog and curse of blackness.  You will keep him controlled.  Focus him with your ranged and he will be dead.   Yes the blights block you from meleeing him so prone him/blind him and he will have a lot less deflection. That's when you focus him with ranged weapons.  I have found since you CAN cc bosses in this game and they do not have astronomical amounts of Endurance like in other games it is often beneficial to eliminate them first.

Secondly, if you he resists CCs and you see him casting Fan of Flames have your party run away and out range it.

Durance: Inspiring Radiance then Repulsing Seal on Maerwald. Aloth: Slicken, Chill Fog, Slicken. Eder in heavy armor. All besides Aloth (who casts Slicken, remember) and Durance (Radiance and Seal) start the fight with an alpha strike from a heavy hitting gun/arbalest that targets Maerwald. Rogue uses blinding or crippling strike for this. After the seal, Durance casts Iconic Projection through friends and foes. Maerwald should be dead by now. If not, he's prone. Eder goes melee with a shield, trying to tank them all. Rogue switches to faster weapon. Durance shoots his heavy hitter. If Maerwald isn't dead by now, your game is broken somehow. ;)

Funny though: I never ever had problems with him. Because I read lots of horror stories about him I always shoot him right in the face at the beginning of the fight and he's always exploding. I think you just have to interrupt him - or be quicker than his spells.

The horror is generally when Mae has enough time to self buff and start casting spells, which is why if he isn't interrupted or killed as you noted, people get hurt.

What I usually did was to use the door way bottleneck trick, where I positioned my party along the wall, so that the enemy ends up jamming the doorway itself and clogging the death funnel. I then beat on the fire spirits one by one, as they come unclogged. Since Maer can't even see my party because he's blocked by his own henchy summons, by the time I'm done with his trash escorts, Kana the chanter has a full array of verses and phantoms to summon.

Once the phantom was on top of Maer, old boy was going to sleep.
