Good Old Games

Tempted to get Distant Worlds, have heard good things about it but also that it is poorly documented/explained. Anyone here play that game and have an opinion ?

I'd be interested to know how twitchy it is. It's another real time 4X that looks great on paper but I'm sort of afraid it'll turn out to be a Sins of a Solar Empire. For reference, AI War was okayish in terms of pace while something like Stellaris is the best alternative to turn based.

No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

I have 100+ hours in it. It's pretty awesome for what it does, but you're right that's lacking in documentation.

The game handles economics and management uniquely and that's really the main draw. Everything can be automated and I mean everything, you can play as a Captain of a single ship in your empire if you choose, with the AI competently handling the rest. And the economy evolves on it's own, with the private sector slowly expanding your empire and hauling the resources around to the bases that need it. That's a weakness too though, as the only way you can play is capitalist :) so a communist empire will always fail against a merchant empire. The only way to truly play is with a laissez faire economy, In that sense it's somewhat liberal biased.

The diplomacy is fairly forgettable and the conquest part of the game is very similar to other titles.

It's however pretty bare boned in terms of graphics and style - so it's more a spreadsheet kinda game, where you enjoy it for all the options, rather than the presentation.

There are mods too (I've even made one) here http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=795&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1 - I can recommend checking out Bacon's Mod, it changes the game quite drastically, but very much for the better.

Fortune favors the bald.

Ok, sounds like it's worth a gamble. Kind of ridiculous what the normal price is, to be honest.

If it's bad, I will find you, Rosbjerg. :p

The question is... Is Hard West worth investing 12.69€ to other games to get it for free?

I have a key for it if you want.

Hmm, I will let you know after during the weekend. I will need to read little bit more about it. I would not want to grab the game from someone else, if he would enjoy it more. Thank you.

*rattles*

*rattles*

*throws the pile of stuff on the table*

Now that Steam sale proved to be utterly underwhelming to me, I ended up grabbing:

Thief: Gold and RollerCoaster Tycoon II, which means a ton of fun times with my laptop.

Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, which... Seems to have good ideas, but not very well realized.

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, which is an obscure Pillars of Eternity ripoff that I didn't enjoy in the past and will give it another shot now.

SOMA 'cause safe mode got added (I really hated how the game handled stealth, see)

For free:

Grim Fandango, which I never played so I'm quite looking forward to it.

An oxen herd

Hard West, that I'm having great fun with.

A good haul all in all.

Thank God I moved my PC into my bedroom with no internet to ha e room for my Christmas tree or else my wallet would be melting right now.

My wallet *is* melting right now, no such luck with the laptop.

The sale was nice (with the exception of the "Star" system, but I dislike a lot these kinds of lucky bags or pinatas).

It reminded me that:

-I'd like to buy games on gog for a backup of games I already have boxed

-I'd like to buy game elsewhere to have a boxed version of games already got on gog too

-I'd like to buy something on my wishlist, planned for a moment

-I'd like to buy something new, meaning not planned

-I'd like to stop make growing my backlog too much in the mean time

I hesitated a lot...

But in the end, while I took the Grim Fandango Remastered freebie (as a "backup" of the original boxed), I didn't for Oxenfree, and I bought Hard West with all goodies and DLC instead of buying more to have basic game free (I already have a boxed copy of the game, and I wanted to buy it for many months but always in the fence).

And I waited until the end, hoping Thea: the Awakening going on sale too (it was on sale at November, but I wasn't in the mood then), so I bought a french boxed copy, hoping it contains a DRM-free version as it was announced when the boxed gold version was released. Seriously, I'm afraid it hasn't as DRM-free boxed releases are pretty scarce here in France (always envious of german DRM-free releases), but let's keep hoping, no matter what I'll get it discounted on gog next time.

So, I succeeded, I guess?

I've almost exhausted GoG. Most every game I ever loved, many heralded games (old and new) I never played, and several funded indie games are now sitting in my library. Nearly everything was acquired dirt cheap too. Many of the games will likely never be installed until I am retired. Some are installed, but I haven't the time to play. Fewer still have been started but are incomplete.

My collection is superb, which makes my backlog equally horrendous. I suppose I'll have time to play all of these games when I'm dead. By that time I'll have to buy the updated compatible versions from Good Ancient Games. *sigh*

GTA Vice City is one of my fav games of all times. I'm fond of car racing games

Ehm... this thread is about Good Old Games (www.gog.com) The distribution platform similar to Steam. Not actual old games ;-)

I'm liking that GoG is getting more and more indie/new release and other "not old or at least not super old" titles - even if my current self isn't much of a gamer anymore. Maybe in another 10 years I won't care about Steam at all.
