Shiny. Some of the released screenshots and environment art look real nice.

Frenzy makes sense, in that it's not as potentially OP as Carnage, but gives barbarian-flavour for someone who wants it.

I'm a bit dubious about skeleton summoning. If it's a daily power, it would presumably be possible for a non-chanter to summon long before the actual chanter can, making it OP at low level, but it scales badly, making it useless at high levels. It's also doesn't really feel definitively chanterish.

Everyone knows Science Fiction is really cool. You know what PoE really needs? Spaceships! There isn't any game that wouldn't be improved by a space combat minigame. Adding one to PoE would send sales skyrocketing, and ensure the game was remembered for all time!!!!!

I guess it will either appear in the second part of the expansion, or they're keeping it under wraps until release so we can still marvel at something despite the spoilers we got from previews :p

The fact they chose to keep it under wraps suggests it has something special, so maybe a new kind of godlike otherwise unavailable as a playable race? Or a monster, even?

The paywall for reading at Something Awful being random as f***, this is what Josh said :

* Examining one shows that they are a soulbinding weapon and lists what classes it can bind to. In place of an Enchant button, they have a button to bind the weapon to the soul of the character whose inventory it is currently in. If a class isn't on the binding list, it can't be bound to that character. Binding doesn't mean the character is forced to use or equip that weapon, but while it's bound to the character, they're the only one who can use it and advance its powers. You can sever the binding if you like, but you will lose all progress on the weapon (it warns you of this).

* Soulbound weapons have a larger examine window that includes a pen and ink style illustration of the weapon.

* Soulbound weapons automatically qualify for any weapon focus/specialization/mastery type talents or abilities you have. E.g., if you have a fighter with WF, WS, and WM in Ruffian, those all apply to St. Ydwen's Redeemer (the soulbinding great sword we demoed) even though great swords are in the Soldier group.

* A bound weapon will display what you need to do to unlock additional powers. Each time you unlock a power, you also gain more lore on the weapon and what the next goal is. The capstone power(s) always complete the lore.

* One of the powers on a soulbound weapon is always class-specific. St. Ydwen's Redeemer has different powers for fighters, paladins, and barbarians.

* Though several of the new unique weapons have "spellchance" powers (more momentous procs that go off on a percentage of Hits and Crits), all soulbound weapons have one.

* Soulbound weapons cannot be enchanted.

So this soulbound weapons thing is kind of the MMO binding stuff mixed with Fable 3's weapon progression.  :ermm:

I have a few questions in this regard revolving around how you balance :cat:  enchanted/unique/soulbound?

1. Right now fully enchanted normal weapons are roughly at the same place in the loot ladder as uniques. That's ok-ish (minus the part where uniques don't feel unique), you either invest in making a weapon the way you want, or roll with whatever unique weapon you like (+/- one or two enchantments if possible). Now, if soulbound stuff is roughly in the same ballpark at max level, then why bother with it? If the soulbound weapons have the potential of exceeding enchanted/unique weapons in terms of usefulness, then why bother using anything unique or enchanting anything? In this regard:

2. Do you have to actually use these weapons to further their progression, or does it happen automatically once they are bound, while they are resting safely in your backpack/stash? If you have to use them and they have the potential to gain massive powers, then good luck ever using anything else. If not, then good luck using them instead of any enchanted/unique weapons until you unlock all their powers (which would basically make them inventory trinkets until max level, and from then on - a substitute for anything else you may be using).

3. Do you get more than one class-specific soulbound weapon, and if so, can you bind more than one at the same time to the same character? If you can, and you don't have to actually use any of them to advance them, then it's kind of a no-brainer. If you can and you do have to use one, then the choice is between soulbound weapons only. If you can only bind one at a time, and have to unbind to advance another, then you either stash the ones you find later in the game and roll with whatever you've already leveled, or get punished for not having the meta-knowledge required to know that you shouldn't bother advancing X and instead wait until you find Y.

4. What is the usual stuff you have to do to advance a soulbound weapon?
If it is (for example) killing five trolls, then say hello to the grinder (why did we drop combat XP again?).
If it is scoring 5 crits/placing 5 traps/using ability/spell 5 times, then it is exploitable.
If it is finishing 5 quests (or a specific quest), then it is more of a gate than an actual requirement.

5. Does the stuff you've already done prior to finding the weapon (like killing a dragon for example) retroactively count towards its advancement once you bind it, or are you screwed if there are no dragons to fight anymore by the time you've found the weapon?

6. Does only the stuff the bound character does count towards weapon advancement, or does it take the rest of the party into account? For example, does Eder have to murder Aloth for stealing his frags on those trolls, or does the weapon's shared soul understand that Aloth is his buddy?

And more!

I really like the UI improvements, which is an often under-appreciated part of game design. Obsidian has some of the best UI people in the industry.

Uhh.. not feeling the "best UI people in the industry" when it comes to the UI itself, honestly. The base UI in PoE is rather terrible, compared to anything you can set up with the IEMod. It's at the point where I flat-out won't play the game unless there's a new release of the IEMod. These are also the same people that refuses to let you differentiate between Neutral NPC:s and Allies - you need the IEMod for that too, or everything shows up as either Red or Green.

Howeveeeeeeeeeeer, I do agree in liking the UI improvements. They're actually very nice, and the only thing I could question is adding more UI features before many of the issues with the current UI hasn't been hashed out (it's still a mess of bars in combat, for example).

But being able to tell ranges and such is gon' be cool.

And more!

1. I expect soulbound weapons will be very limited in number, and therefore weapon type. The soulbound greatsword isn't any use for a ranged specialist or a shield user, and I doubt there will be enough soulbound weapons for every party member to have one. My guess is there will be four or five: one ranged weapon, one two handed weapon, one reach weapon, one one handed weapon, and one fast/offhand weapon.

2. It says that what you have to do to improve the weapon is it's the description. By implication it will be completing a quest of some kind. I would guess something like "kill a dragon" and that kind of thing.

3. I suspect simply having the soulbound weapon in your inventory will be sufficient to improve it, but I doubt there will be enough that you will want to give more than one to any character (unless soloing).

5. I'm pretty sure you would have to do the quest after acquiring the weapon. I'm also pretty sure they will try to make it so it's very difficult to put yourself in the position where it is impossible to complete the quest.

6. I suspect it will be fine for any party member to "kill a dragon". It's easier to script that way than to check to see if the weapon was actually used for the killing blow.

I think soulbound weapons should have less raw power (accuracy and damage bonuses) than normal enchanted weapons and make up for it with unique abilities. It would be pretty stupid If they are strictly better.
