Question about Patchs and Steam.

Grom56

Question

Hello all, and sorry if this is a silly question, but Pillars is the first game I've ever bought through Steam.  That being said, I was wondering how patches are handled on Steam.  Do I have to log into Steam and download the patch, or is it an auto update to my game files?  Also, if I play the game using a desktop shortcut instead of opening Steam and starting the game from in there, does Steam still load the patch.

Thanks all for any answers!   I've been getting a kick out of Pillars so far, and see some nice stuff in this new patch 1.05 that looks very cool.

Hmmmm....   Well it's been well over 45 min and the game won't load.  Just sits at a screen saying  "Preparing to load Pillars of Eternity"  No count down or progress bar anywhere letting me know it's updating, or how far along in the update it is.   This is very disappointing to say the least.    Looks like now that there was a patch, I'm no longer allowed to load the game.

First time Steam user...  looks like it will also be the last time I use them.   I miss the good old days of buying a game on disk....

Steam won't let you play the game without automatically updating to the latest patch. You can however, activate offline mode if you don't want to play with the latest patches. To do so, just click on "Steam" at the top left corner of steam and then click on "Go Offline...".

Weird, I've never experience those emphasised parts before. Maybe it's a one-time thing? Or a bug?
