If Pillars of Eternity had romances

Recommended Posts

Nakia, you contradict yourself. The companions in the game are exactly that. Intelligent and capable beings as part of our adventure group. If you've had your way and we've had these "romances" people will immediately become sex objects and all regards to their persobality opinion or anything else will be obsolete. How do people expect me to feel emotionally attracted to a character who I have only known for such a small amount of time and only been able to talk through what the writers chose me to is shocking even after playing games for decades. Are you guys this easy to fall for someone in real life too? It would have to be maybe 1 in 5000 games for me to actually feel a romantic attraction to a written character. That's why I date and date and date before I find someone I'm emotionally invested in. I don't get this. I really don't.

No romance.

:sigh: I really wish certain people would realize that women play these games too. Personally I find being considered only as a sex object and not a person, intelligent and capable of contributing to the adventure as an equal very insulting.

Who is only considering you a sex object and not a person capable of contributing to the adventure as an equal?
Just one person. But he's loud.

I don't usually like romance, but if the next game relaxes the apparent urgency of the whole quest it could be an interesting addition. But as it stands usually they are cheesy and often either lazily done, or take up so much dialogue that it interferes with other things.

That is quite true, scrotiemcb, and I have tangled with him in other threads, it gets tiresome.  And no I was not refering in any way to Duncan.  Thank you  for clarifying that.

on a serious note, the best argument against romances I'm seeing in this thread amounts to "But Dragon Age has them and that game sucks!"

If Obsidian actually had writers capable of doing romances properly (which they don't) I guarantee no-one would complain.

Romance options are fun, and they attract more female gamers. However, I've learned that having female gamers can BACKFIRE. Bioware made all the females in Inquisition look ugly (except morrigan & leliana) to appease the gays & feminists. They also made sure all the women in Inquisition were ugly so the female gamers don't feel insecure about their looks in real life. Doing this ended up attracting the LGBT community & more female gamers, but at the expense of content for straight males.

As long as Obsidian stays strong with their balls intact, then yes, by all means add romance options. Just remember to NEVER be politically correct when adding romance options, AND DO NOT CAVE IN TO THE WOMEN OR GAYS, BE STRONG.

Your priority should always be:

1. Straight male gamers FIRST

2. Women second

3. Gays LAST.

The following two romance types will APPEASE everyone:

1) Highly attractive tramp female companion.

2) Highly attractive a-hole male companion.

Then make them both bi-sexual, DONE, simple. That will cater to just about everyone who doesn't have a fetish for ugly people or some kind of weird political agenda.

More of this nonsense.

If there is one thing I believe about video and computer games, it is that you're better off trying to appeal to 5 demographics with 5 games than 5 demographics with 1 game. Thus, this "always" rule of yours is utter drivel. I haven't played DA:I but if it's a game for feminists and gays then that's okay (and it's probably about time they got something with decent production value). Straight people are a demographic as well, so some games should be made for them, too.

What you're imagining, however, is a game made for everyone "that matters," hatefully excluding everyone which "doesn't matter," based on the concept that there can be such a thing as a perfect game with maximum appeal. That is a lie. There is no perfect game, only perfect games.

And someone's perfect game probably involves gay dragon porn. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe someday someone will make it for him.

I'm following the romance formula that Skyrim used and that game has sold 20 million copies to date.    In Skyrim you have romance-able companions that don't judge someone if they are straight or gay, they can be romanced by an gender, hence no favoritism of any group.  Dragon Age Origins followed this formula to a certain degree as well.

The problem is EA/Bioware made a game that steers so far away from the original that it crosses into the bait & switch category.  If the game had a "gay/feminist" sticker on the front, then I wouldn't of bought it.

I believe I just destroyed your argument and WON THE DEBATE, god damn I'm good!

Dragon Age Origins did an excellent job with romance for Alistair (from speaking to many female gamers), Leliana & Morrigan.  I don't know about Zevran because I always kill him in game.

Calsica portrait is nice though. :)

Prostitution is not romance and has nothing to do with romance.  It already is included in the game.   The word romance implies at least some minimal emotional relationship between the folk involved.

:sigh:  I really wish certain people would realize that women play these games too.  Personally I find being considered  only as a sex object and not a person, intelligent and capable of contributing to the adventure as an equal very insulting.

Tell that to tyr,lan when he was young.

Personally I find being considered  only as a sex object and not a person, intelligent and capable of contributing to the adventure as an equal very insulting.

So you hate Morrigan & Leliana? HOW DARE YOU.  Why are you disrespecting all clever and intelligent female NPC's? Do you want them to be mere sex objects? I hate how you degrade women with your comment.  I respect women to the highest degree. Are you a feminist or something?

Anytime a woman feels insulted, she is a feminist.

Strong women never get insulted, they make witty come backs worthy of praise.  The difference between an immature girl and a strong woman is knowing how to mind **** the male species.

YOU GOTTA IMPRESS ME WOMAN.

I feel bad enough about manipulating my merry band of emotional cripples into following me toward what is likely a horrible demise. But in pursuing the main quest, you could at least make an argument for the greater good. Getting them into bed feels like pure sociopathy.

You mean like how certain publishers waste millions upon millions of dollars trying to make their own Call of Duty or their own World of Warcraft, but it doesn't work because CoD and WoW aren't going anywhere and have already conquered their niches?

Games shouldn't follow formulas because copying another game doesn't make your game better, it makes it a shallow imitation. Game designers should be themselves and put whatever they feel passionately about into their work (even if it's non-mainstream sexuality, even if it is no romance at all). And I mean that from both an artistic and a business perspective.

@luzarius straight male gamer's didn't come first in skyrim every body that was a marriage option was bisexual.

Not to mention you not liking how a female looks has nothing to do with gay's or feminist's.

I'm not unreasonable.

Here is a list of games where the females look great, some of these games have gay content and I have no problem with it:

- Kotor 1

- Baldurs Gate

- Mass Effect 1,2,3

- Dragon Age Origins

- Dragon Age 2

- Witcher series

- Skyrim (especially with mods)

- POE (Calsica's Portrait, a majority of female portraits of beautiful feminine looking women)

Games where the females are ugly and romance options for straight male gamers look like mannish, butch lesbians:

- Dragon Age Inquisition

As you can see, I've only had this problem with one game in my entire gaming history.

Inquisition catered highly to feminists & gay men, then as a side effect, the women somehow all became ugly. There's a link there.  Break it down logically by comparing Inquisition to all the games I've listed that I've enjoyed.

I never ever want what was done to Inquisition to spread to other games, I'm just voicing my opinion as much as I can in hopes that this disease never spreads and infects other quality games.  I'm also here to remind Obsidian that there are lots of gamers like me out there, but some like me don't want to be politically incorrect. I don't give a **** about being politcically correct so they can speak through me. The reason you don't see a lot of this kind of talk is because the Bioware forum has heavy North Korean style, nazi censorship against any straight person who doesn't like Inquisition's shemales.

yes, dead serious. I even provided comparisons so you could logically assess my assessment. Don't forget that feminists infecting gaming is on the rise as well.

Good job on ignoring the comparisons I presented and instead pick & choose what you want to try use against me (failing horribly) in a political style campaign.  They would LOVE you on the bioware forum.

I've been over this with you before. You like women who are scarcely dressed and sexually aggressive. They don't exist in DA:I and that's why you hate them.

You like women like Isabella, who talk about sex whenever they can and will screw anything that points at them.

And that's really great, but those women only exist in video games and pornography (and in clubs after midnight :p)
