Steam now has Paywall mods

Recommended Posts

I did not particularly object to the concept of paid mods. The Grey Wolves Mega-mod for Silent Hunter III required a one dollar donation fee to the devs in order to get the download link (though admittedly that was a bargain of the century compared to some of the stuff we saw on the Workshop for the amount of stuff it added) and the Microsoft Flight Sim series has had paid planes developed by third-party developers, which is a practice continued with Digital Combat Simulator.

The issue was that Valve adopted a "Sink or Swim" approach when putting this out there. If there was a spiral testing approach and a slow roll out of the system as was done for Team Fortress 2, then hardly anyone would have raised a stink, and the problems (which are still many) associated with this system would have been worked out early and rather painlessly as they came rather than everyone having to deal with them all it once.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

Quote

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating.

Pretty much means they will do it again with game that doesn't have "a years old modding community".

^ Kind of what it sounds like to me, too. But who knows.

I still think in principle the ability to sell mods isn't a bad idea.

The idea is not bad, but the implementation and execution was goddamn terrible. But I think like many others, for mods, much better solution would be donation based workshop.

I am a big fan of the idea of tools and resources evolving to become easier to use and less expensive to access. A triple "A" game's resources including a ready set of functioning mechanics that don't have to be made from scratch is a big resource for developers.

A donation button is nice. But I think entirely unreliable for someone to get into full time and maybe invest into the quality and scope.

Bottom line is the greed bothers me. 75%. That, and the profit motivation is going to stifle innovation and creativity not promote it. On the other hand if it means that they are going to release dev tools on any major titile in the hopes of being able to collect forever from the efforts of a potential modding comunity - Dev tools are a nice thing.

In a perfect world they would just make the game and however many offical DLCs then open up the game for modding by hack or accident or intentionally and then GO AWAY FOREVER.

Those days are probably gone though.

Why is this 'Alden' felllow calling it 'our own game's community'. Is he from Bethesda ? Pretty sure not. Valve/STEAM doesn't have developer creds anymore, they are just a middleman.

stop pretending you are one of the cool kids. You just work at the cash register.

Great, developers won't even have to develop their own DLC - they'll get paid from the modders efforts! Win!

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

I have a problem with Steam doing it regardless of the breakdown of numbers, because even if implemented competently, too much of the industry is already concentrated in the hands of one entity and this would just lock us in even more tightly. I'd be a lot more open to the Nexus implementing such a system, even if the agreement they sign with Bethesda was no different.

Fallout 4 would be the logical choice, no doubt...but perhaps Bethesda will not wish to stick its hands in this controversy again. We'll see, I suppose.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Customers won the battle but the war still rages on.

I'm a bit annoyed that they caved so quickly. I'm not entirely done being angry.

Feed your anger on the potential. Be mad at what could have been and how they could do it in the first place.

And then we'll find a way to monetise the anger. Because we strongly believe that angry people should be rewarded for the effort they put into getting pissed at stuff. We want to encourage angry people to work full time on their pet peeves, so more quality rants are produced. We believe this will result in more butthurt for for everyone, fostering competition to produce top-notch foaming at the mouth. We want minor annoyances to lead to bloodshot eyed-frenzies, and we want it to happen organically for any mildly irritated person who wants to take a shot at suffering a stroke.

Well.......with software piracy allows distribution of something to anyone for free, so piracy = communism.

Makes sense when you see how bunched corporations get their panties over it.
