Why cant I enchant weapons?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to further enchant Justice, the unique two-handed sword. It has 4/12 enchantment capability.

I have all the materials and gold. I fulfill the level requirement. It still says "cannot enchant".

What gives?

Yeah but I tried it on a "fine weapon" and its all the same.

I thought the only restriction to enchanting (besides having the gold, materials and lvl) is the 0/12 thingie.

If it already has fine you can't give it Accuracy 1, for example.

Ahhhh I see. Those are the "basic" enchants right?

Right. There's the quality enchantments, the bonus damage enchantments, and the species-target enchantments.

The quality enchantments are somewhat complicated and not well explained. They come in piecemeal (accurate, damaging, etc.) and in packages (Fine, etc.) You can't combine the bases with the packages--you can't have accurate 2 and fine, etc. This works in tandem with the point-cost system. You can, however, combine them with each other--you can have accurate 1 and 2, your can have accurate 2 and damage 1, etc.

, and with others you simply can't enchant them.  I sometimes wonder if it's a bug.

I think I figured it out.

In enchanting weapons there is only 3 categories of weapon properties - Quality, Slaying and Secondary Damage. You can have only one of each.

In enchanting armors there is also 3 categories - Proofing, Quality and Attribute Bonuses. Likewise you can hold only one per category.

And there's no removing properties, so you're stuck with what you got.

That's why weapons that come with something like draining are so good--you can enchant them with the secondary damage and slaying, and upgrade their quality, and the special enchantments they come with don't count against it.

I'm pretty sure if you pick a second option from a catagory that is already on the wapon it will remove the old option and add on the new one, e.g. I have upgraded a wapon from fine to supurb in the game.

For real?

That is the way it's supposed to work. Better enchantments from the some group are supposed to replace the lesser ones.

Interesting.

Anyone that can try and confirm?

I can definitely confirm that, I've done it a lot. It seems you can have one of each tier of weapon enchant *unless* one of those enchants came with the weapon--I have a weapon that came with Accurate 3 you can give that accurate 1, but you can't do it yourself manually.

In which case you can upgrade them ? e. g. Fine to Exceptional, Exceptional to Superb , no ? Am I getting this right ?
