Party gained 0 experience message spam then crash

belze

Question

My game had been going without issue until I was finishing the His Old Self quest.  I returned to the Goose and Fox in Copperlane, walked up to Kaenra, and talked to her about Purnisc.  When we were done talking I could see the message Party gained 0 experience spam the message window endlessly.  When I exited the tavern the loading screen appeared and disappeared, as if the game loaded but I could only see a black screen and an in-game cursor until it finally crashed.  The text from the crash window is below.

I first saw this crash when my game was still on 1.2.  After it crashed I allowed the game to update to 1.3 but the crash persists.

To update, I had tried the steps above multiple times from the autosave and they always lead to the same results.  Eventually I decided to not finish this quest now and do more exploring in the city.  I picked locks and discovered places, gaining some XP each time.  I went into the Scriveners Dormitory and picked a lock in there that spammed a 60 XP gained message so many times I gained about 10,000 XP within seconds.  I was able to exit the house without a crash, but didn't want to save with all that extra XP.  My autosave had been overwritten so I went back and reloaded my save in Purnisc's house, did everything from before and was able to finish the His Old Self quest without issue this time.
