After talking to the Head Warden Ethelmoer I was given the task of talking to the Animancers and asking about anything unusual. I had previously talked to everyone in the sanitarium and exhausted all conversation options, so they were greyed out.
I had finished Aloth's quest there, talked with Nans about the scepter and sold it to her and also talked with Moedred about Helig of Thein and given him the key to the chest before talking to the Head Warden.
Now I could ask Nans about the leaden key but when I started the conversation with Moedred there was no new option. Only after I had asked him again about some previously asked points did the option appear.
