Simple Crafting System letdown ?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I don't see any section of the forum where you can post about things you like to see improved or better for Pillars of Eternity. So I would just start it in the general discussion thread. I made an account specifically to write this (hehe).

I really like this game a lot, I love the story (so far) and I like the setting, difficulty (so far) and all the general RPG elements are here in this game.

I am 20-22 hours into the game, and I am still in Act 1 as I like to explore every bush, stone and corner of the map and clear all mobs and want to take my time to choose carefully what textual decisions I go for that suit the type of person  I want to play.

The only real downside of Pillars of Eternity, and I must say this is a really big let-down so far in the game. And that is that the crafting system feels very basic and boring? I really hope that I am wrong and that there are still tons of recipes to find in later acts etc to craft stuff.... I tried finding some info about crafting on internet and I am afraid its as limited as it is currently.

A big part of RPGs that I enjoy, is finding materials to craft very strong armor, legendary armor or whatever. It is part of my character growth besides leveling and skilling up and learning new abilities along the way. But from I see so far, the crafting is very very limited in the game. And it is very disappointing and I would have really loved to see a very indepth crafting system where crafting the really good stuff takes quite some time to find all the necessary materials and/or unique materials that only drop from specific bosses/mobs.

Such a shame, because I feel that if there was a indepth crafting system in this game, like so many other things in this game that are indepth. I would give this game a 10/10. But because of the boring / simple crafting system I would give this game only a 7/10. It still in the positive, but at the same time a big letdown because this game could have been given a 10 if the crafting system was as elaborate as many other aspects in this game/

How do you guys feel about the crafting system? Was it a choice to make it so easy and limited? I would like to hear your thoughts.

I think that it's not really the focus in a game of this type; I'm happy that they put their resources into, for example, developing the story and more quests and such instead of crafting.  That said, I wouldn't be surprised if this was improved upon for the expansion, with new recipes at least.

I agree the crafting system in PoE in my opinion doesn't make any sense.

I think they should have went with Witcher 1  \ Never winter nights 2 route of crafting and item use.

Where a blade sharpening - would give a buff to the blade for "x" period of time

You can apply potions onto the blade etc.

Because adding 3 mushrooms a gem and a hide of troll just seems like - lets just do something random.

They could have made the world more living - where based on the missions you do the availbility and prices of goods will vary.

You helped "x" tyrant the mine prices drop. Your reputation drops. But at least you get Cheap ore to craft "x" sword.

In my opinion crafting should be much more onerous than the present system which just reminds me of Skyrim or what I hear of MMOs. Only true crafting experts with many years experience should be able to make stuff and this probably isn't going to be a player character at all - but a powerful Smith or Mage.

It's actually immersion-breaking for me. If adding some flowers and a couple of gemstones is all that is needed to make a 'Fine' or whatever weapon - then why aren't ALL weapons in the game of at least that quality? Who in their right mind would NOT stroll into a nearby meadow and pick up the required ingredients to insta-craft something?

Take it out entirely and replace it with rare, specialist NPCs.

Have you considered that you may be taking it too literally?

That it's not actually the character doing it in all cases, but perhaps them contacting a skilled smith or whatever?

My personal opinion is that crafting is nice as it is, simple, fast and usefull.
I find extensive crafting systems that require you to also go somewhere in order to craft, tedious and boring.
I like that we can fastly make stuff wherever we are and apply some bonuses fastly if we have the right ingredients. Sure its not realistic not by any chance but for me it removes the main issue I have with crafting in other games which is constant backtracking to get to "crafting spots"

I can RP that, I guess. Better to actually HAVE the skilled Smith instead tho :). Especially when crafting is possible in the middle of a dungeon crawl.

I see mixed opinions which is good.

If I have (out of the top of my head) think some positive reasons why the crafting system is so limited on weapons and armor. It would probably make balancing the difficulty easier

as you can set a baseline of average damage output a class can produce and adjust the difficulty accordingly. Whereas if you have a indepth crafting system and after elaborate time you successfully craft strong weapons, the difficulty would suddenly be too easy because you became 'OP'.

Right now, Weapons and Armor are very basic in the game. For me personally that is a letdown, because I think crafting or getting/finding legendary items is part of a process in RPGs that I really enjoy. But on the other side, right now the combat is very consistent and rather then having to focus on your OP weapons, you need to worry more if your accuracy is high enough or if you applied the right buffs and/or debuffs.

So, if my theory Is correct this might be why the crafting is so limited. But at same time I am here to provide some feedback and I can't help but find it a shame that the crafting in the game is so limited right now. :)

On story driven games, with quest structure where you embark in a great adventure, I find crafting systems more of a nuisance rather than added value. The character has very imposing goals and limited time to achieve them, being a smith is not usually one of them.

On sandbox, open-world games, MMORPGs, crafting systems are to be expected not only given the game purpose, but because also adds to the playing value (generic/non-existent quest lines, world immersion rather than story immersion).

I recall NWN1 weapon armor crafting system with fondness: over the course of the adventure the character would find very rare ingredients that he could take back to a certified smithy for unique weapon crafting. I personally liked that, I was an adventurer, he was a smith, there was order in the world (I might have been playing a Torm cleric).

So it is my opinion that the crafting system on PoE is at least giving a nudge to the fans of the feature, without overburdening the player that seeks a more "classic" adventure.

Let us recall the update when they proposed a very big crafting system and everybody went nukin' futz and demanded something more simple.  You can blame them d;D

I honestly don't mind the crafting system, once you get down what each ingredient goes for, and what you like to make/enchant it becomes fairly simple, and gives me an excuse to revisit old locations to troll the shop owners - and see some of the neat "post-you-did-things" texts and blurbs from the common folk.

If this is true, then that is a real shame. I suppose the masses don't like a elaborate crafting system then. But I think its really a fundamental part of RPGs.

Oh well, I still enjoy the game. :)

Pretty disappointed in the crafting system, myself. You can craft potions, scrolls, and food. I don't consider the enchanting of weapons crafting, exactly. I want to be able to use traps somehow besides picking up the very limited amount that are scattered around the game world and using those. I picked Rogue because I was expecting a Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale style Rogue where I could, you know... do rogue things. Like if you picked the Bounty Hunter sub-class of the Thief/Rogue in those games, you got access to special traps. I love the game so far, but the crafting system and pitiable Rogue are disappointing.
