I know your question is "are the companions well written?" but,  for me the companion interactions is a big part of the appeal for these games so, for my 1st run through, I'll be sure to only use them. I may try a custom party if I wan't to try the very hard settings.

A tons of options is good. =) Mostly want to make sure I have some interaction with the characters after I add them to the group.

The companions offers tons of good dialogue options and add excellent commentary to the stories.

 

Their combat abilities are... lacking to say the least.
