PLEASE let's use the correct game terminologies!

Recommended Posts

For me, if someone says POE and they mean Paths of Exile, it's confusing to me.  In other words, there is no such thing as official game terminology here, it is up to each player.  I don't care how popular the other game is in some corners of the world.

As for wikis, the unofficial ones are often better I think.  Sometimes there is only one wiki, then along comes a new one that is "official" which has only a fraction of the information and a clumsier interface.  Player made is often much better.  The better wiki is always the "real" one for me, even if it's not "official".  Anything by wikia or gamepedia I'd rather take a pass on.

I remember the times WC3 was Wing Commander 3, not WarCraft 3...

oh sure, that happens all the time to Gromnir. we play in a softball league and whenever somebody mentions the NSA (national softball association) in the context o' our softball league affiliations, we always get bumfuzzled.

...

wait, no we don't.

HA! Good Fun!

Confirmed proof Gromnir is spying on all of us... playing PoE (Project Eternity) before us using government codes (provided by Paradox?)

It's a conspiracy I tell you! *Dusts off Deus Ex*

hey, it ain't Gromnir, it is the "softball" association folks who is listening to your phone conversations and reading your emails.  and y'know, we never trusted those guys. 260 lb 40-somethings with knee braces on both legs who is willing to charge the catcher at home plate to score a run?  who could trust them, eh? has gotta be some kinda six degrees o' separation 'tween the NSA (national softball association) and the illuminati.

HA! Good Fun!

Oh, oh!

And don't forget that your main character is the Player Character, who can be accompanied by pre-made Companions with personalities and/or by player created Adventurers without any character. You can also staff your Stronghold with Hirelings.

Also, don't mix up Talents and Abilities. And DR is Damage Reduction, not Damage Resistance. Health/Endurance, not Stamina!

Maybe I'm being too obssesive/compulsive, but too many people are mixing up game-related terms, or using them wrong or inconsistently. Too many times I've been confused about what someone was talking about. So figured I'd make this post so that we can all be on one page and be able to communicate clearer through the forum.

GAME NAME

Some people still refer to this game as "Project Eternity". That was the old name of the game when the kickstarter launched. New people (like me) know this game only by "Pillars of Eternity". When I first came to the forum and I saw people talking about "Project Eternity", I was like "What the heck are they talking about?". Anyway no reason to use that anymore. When talking about the game, call it "PILLARS OF ETERNITY" because that is the official name

GAME ABBREVIATION

Please, don't abbreviate the game as "POE". I play Path of Exile a lot and that's what POE refers to usually. Sometimes I'm like "Why are people talking about Path of Exile in the Pillars of Eternity forums??

Just call the game by it's full name, "Pillars of Eternity". Or maybe use just "Pillars" or "Eternity" for short.

GUIDES

There is the strategy guide, guidebook, and game manual. Be sure to refer to the correct one when talking about something you read there. The guidebook covers lore, strategy guide covers strategy, and manual covers game instructions. I saw a post about someone who read in the Guidebook that a spider's perception is 12. But the Guidebook does not list creature stats, only the strategy guide does. So if you talk about something you read in one of those books, be sure to use the correct name so I can look up stuff I'm interested in

WIKIS

From reading the forums I've seen two big Wikis - The OFFICIAL one at Gamepedia and the UNOFFICIAL one at Orcz.

The Gamepedia one is the official wiki endorsed by Obsidian, while the Orcz one is an unofficial wiki maintained just by the players. If you say you read something on the "Wiki", I'll assume you meant the Gamepedia one and look it up there. For the Orcz wiki, either refer to it by name, or say "Unofficial Wiki" or "Community Wiki" or "Player Wiki". Again, If I want to look up interesting stuff people say they found, so I want to be sure I am on the right site.

SPELLS & ABILITIES

People are refering to everything as a spell. Remember, Wizards and Priests have "Spells", while Ciphers have "Powers", chanters have "Chants", and other classes have "Abilities". If you talk about spell mechanics and you are actually referring to a warrior ability then its confusing. Not everything is a spell!

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

Might, Constitution, Intellect, Perception, Dexterity and Resolve are ATTRIBUTES.

Lore, Mechanics, Survival, Athletics, and Stealth are SKILLS

Dont get the two mixed up!

COMPANIONS

We have "Companions" who join your party. We also have "Animal Companions" that accompany the ranger. And we have "Pets" that are not Animal Companions but are more for vanity.

Thanks for making these forums a better place!

No.

When in Rome...

There is only one PoE here and that's not a diablo-like game.

Or instead of trying to save time like if our lives depended on it, we could bother to write the full name of the stuff we talk about. This is not a combat situation where you may not have the time to say "as soon as possible".

Or maybe developers could try not to use names that conflict with others when being lazy an using acronyms. WC == WarCraft? What happened to WaterCloset? \(T_T)/

In any case, PdlE* is god here over that CdE** thingy. :-P

OP.....it's up to each new user to adapt to these forums not for the forums to adapt to one user.....don't know what Project Eternity is? Google it. Confused about the PoE abbreviation? Common sense should dictate that on the Pillars of Eternity forums people aren't using it to refer to Path of Exile.....have a hard time getting over it? Sounds like a personal problem to me.

...since we're doing this, is there any way we can get people to stop saying 'internet' when they mean 'web'?

And could we maybe refrain from dropping a syllable from 'caramelise' and adding a syllable to 'nuclear'?

Everyone needs to know that Golden State is not a city, and even if it was -it's not San Francisco. It's Oakland.

Well, the guide for PoE does a pretty good job of laying out Project Eternity's game mechanics. For example, things like different Chanter spells and clarifying how the Mechanics attribute works with a character with a high DEX skill. Check the wiki for more info. Not sure why it's so confusing...

Nice one, this made me laugh :D

I agree about not abbreviating the game "POE"

I will go with "Pillars"

I share your pain. People keep using LoL for some game that isn't Lands of Lore. It's ridiculous.

Oooh. Only some more hours till PoE release now!

Can I refer to the protagonist as my Avatar? If I call him/her my PC will Mac users convulse? What if I call her/him my Mac?

When I'm rerolling my gnome, can I say I'm just shooting for a better THAC0?

"Project Eternity" sounds more like a science fiction game. In fact, "Project" (the noun, not the verb) itself sounds anathema to a classic fantasy RPG.

As a code name, "Project Eternity" was perfect. Now it can be reused for some madman's ambition to achieve immortality for all. Or a band name.

Lol no. This is why context exists, so you can specify meaning on your own without resorting to ludicrous levels of pedantry and trying to enforce that on everyone.

so maybe here in the forums we can just refer to it as "the game"

The one you just lost?
