Ever since the stream, I've been thinking about custom party members. This is going to assume you can only have a party of seven. I've been thinking up names, races, classes, and what stat specialization they would be. What would your hypothetical party hypothetically look like?

At the current moment, here are my ideas for my custom adventurer's party:

Main (Wizard): Shiloh

Death Godlike, Female, Old Valia, Mercenary

Int/Might/Con

Bruiser (Fighter): Tank

Boreal Dwarf, Male, The Living Lands, Hunter

Might (20)/Con

Buffer (Chanter): Shortstack

Human, Female, Aedyr, Aristocrat

Resolve/Con/Int

Archer (Ranger): Oz

Wood Elf, Female, The White That Wends, Hunter

Might/Dex/Per (Resolve WAY DOWN)

Crowd Control (Eothas Priest): Taylor

Death Godlike (Head 2), Male, Old Valia, Artist

Int/Might/Dex

Defensive Support (Rogue): Calvin

Human, Male, Rautai, Laborer

Might/Int/Perception/Dex

Offensive Support (Druid): Hobbes

Human, Male, Rautai, Scholar

Might/Int/Resolve

Calvin and Hobbes are twins, by the way. They will have the same avatar.

I haven't done much with the beta for a while, so I'm sure things will change, but my party right now is built around role-playing.

Main:  Bathsheba (Wizard)

Pale elf, female, Living Lands, Scientist

Int/Might/Dex

Tank:  David (Paladin - Shieldbearer of St. Elcga)

Savannah human, male, Ixamitl Plains, aristocrat

more Per/Res less Might/Int

Utility:  Daniel (Priest of Eothas)

Moon Godlike, male, Ixamitl Plains, scholar

max Might, high Int, a bit o' Res

Buffs:  Solomon (Chanter)

Death Godlike, male, Old Vailia, aristocrat

Int then Con/Res

Melee DPS:  Job (Rogue)

Hearth Orlan, male, The White that Wends, drifter

even mix MIght/Dex/Per/Int

Range DPS:  Jemima (Hunter)

Animal Companion (Lion - Ariel)

Savannah human, female, The Living Lands, hunter

Dex then Might/Per

Since only gameplay information I have are from websites and watching streamer/youtube, I can't say for certain how this will work but I feel that this makeup feels "safe"

Main: Paladin

My main will be joined by fighter, rogue, priest, wizard, chanter.

This should make a good all-round skilled party with fighter and paladin in front, rouge and chanter in middle, and wizard and priest in the back.

By choosing custom party in your 1st playthrough, you rob yourself of party banter that only premade NPCs have.

Also Rogue, Barb and Monk are the only classes so far who will not have VO at release.

So if you want as much banter as you can get, i suggest you start as one of the classes i listed.

I can live without it. I remember the first time I fired up IWD, and discovered that you got to create an entire party, rather than just a player characer, and how thrilled I was. Creating characters in games, especially rpg's, is something I really enjoy, since I get to express my creativy in some way. In this regard, you can keep your banter and your pre-made characters, I'll gladly opt to make up a party of my own design.

"Good thing I don't heal my characters or they'd be really hurt." Is not something I should ever be thinking.

I'm still wondering if we'll be able to make a custom party without spending a punishing amount of coin:

Have the fees changed in more recent versions of the backer beta?

Yeah, they're cheaper now.

Now it cost:

250 lvl 1

500 lvl 2

750 lvl 3

ect...

lol Yeah. I keep hearing about how bad Rangers are. I kind of wanted to include another female and I thought Jemima would be an interesting addition, especially in light of Job. I want a solid range DPS and I don't want two of any class. I'm sure even a weaker class would still work in a normal difficulty game, but it doesn't hurt to consider options. I just haven't played enough of the beta to know which is best. Probably just make the rogue range DPS and then make a barbarian or something for melee dps.

Rangers are not as bad as they were, they still just aren't super strong and their pets are sort of paper champions.  No class in the game sucks if you use it right, some just aren't as blatantly (or easily) as strong as others.

  • 2 weeks later...

On the eve of launch, am reconfiguring my group to be more.... nepotistic. I'm deciding on my group being named after my supernatural spec script or my game dev spec script (in which casem I'd be RP'ing my characters RP'ing).

Think my second playthrough is going to be the Stark family. The first will be with premade NPCs, I live for party banter.

PC: Ned Stark, human Paladin, support with a greatsword.

Robb Stark, human Fighter, tank with sword + shield.

Jon Snow, human Ranger using both bow and sword. Wolf companion, obviously.

Sansa Stark, human Chanter (she does sing). Maybe I'll just go for Catelyn, she's more interesting.

Bran Stark, human (maybe Nature Godlike?) Druid.

Arya Stark, human (maybe Orlan? she's small) Rogue, damage dealer with a rapier.

A party of wizard's dual wielding katanas. Kensai all day.

This better work, Sawyer! You said I could be anything!

no katanas in PoE

So wait, I will either have the choice of picking up the pre-made companion/characters in game without paying, or purchasing the ones I can create myself as if they were gear in a store? That's kind of a bummer. I am torn now on whether I want to run through with the pre-made ones or not first.

I'm going to go main char + story npc's, but I like good old sword and bow style with occasional evoker type wizard, I don't like healers either. But I may make some changes for this run through therefore:

Main char:
Dialog oriented (resolve, perception, intellect, dex) weapon + shield fighter

Other chars:

1 defensive front liner (can be paladin or fighter)

1 offensive front liner with double handed weapon
1 offensive support melee (rogue or ranger) whoe takes care of traps and locks too

1 evoker-type damage oriented wizard

1 wild card. will depend on story (normally this one is love interest)

Tactics: enter combat using shotguns then switch to melee. two frontline defensive fighters hold the line while support DPM'ers deal damage. No healers. Gotta deal damage fast and get out.
