Journalism and sexism in the games industry

That quote encapsulates Pediepie's shtick perfectly.

I don't get his popularity. But I don't get it the same way I don't get reality TV or Michael Bay movies or *insert whatever obnoxious pop culture thing*.

He frames the events in such a manner that coupled with the contagious nature of fun video games draws the audience whom are experiencing the game through him vicariously.

Reality TV is popular because people enjoy both the catharsis of watching others whom they can look down on and the curiosity of seeing the lives of other people in a society that has degraded social interactions.

Michael Bay is popular because moviegoers want an experience that they couldn't get on their small TVs at home, he makes movies that are like the stories of park rides. Just enough to contextualize the ride.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

She only played video-games as a little kid to seek attention and justification from her elder brothers, which she never got, not because she actually liked it. Now she is projecting all those feelings of neglect and failure on all men and making money off it.

My 2 cents.

Check this snippet out:

The episode would not have shocked anybody familiar with the campus scene from two decades earlier. In 1992, an episode along somewhat analogous lines took place, also in Ann Arbor. In this case, the offending party was the feminist videographer Carol Jacobsen, who had produced an exhibition documenting the lives of sex workers. The exhibition’s subjects presented their profession as a form of self-empowerment, a position that ran headlong against the theories of Catharine MacKinnon, a law professor at the university who had gained national renown for her radical feminist critique of the First Amendment as a tool of male privilege. MacKinnon’s beliefs nestled closely with an academic movement that was then being described, by its advocates as well as its critics, as “political correctness.” Michigan had already responded to the demands of pro-p.c. activists by imposing a campuswide speech code purporting to restrict all manner of discriminatory speech, only for it to be struck down as a First Amendment violation in federal court.

Let's try not to ignore that the exposition was also the work of a feminist, though. The extremists aren't the majority, even if some of them are in positions of power.

I think it's more of a realization that this has happened before. Simpsons did it first and all that.

That's pretty heartbreaking. :(

I don't really see it that way, I think it just highlights how retarded these people are.

Fun fact: I made sure to use the word retarded in the above statement because then they'll accuse me of being ableist, and the irony will be fan-****ing-tastic.

I'm sure you've just internalized ableism or something.

So - rather than infer either the use of sarcasm or the intentional use of rhetoric- is the ableist reference intended to highlight the nature of sexism in the gaming industry? Text is always awkward, and as the topic at hand affects dreams, careers and passion, I would rather not assume meaning. The reality - whether gaming, the arts in general, generative or creative avenues of vocation all the way to almost every sector of our western economy gender and sexism certainly stratify and divide. So - it is hopeful - whenever such conversation can occur with respect and civility to help us all see how we are both complicit and part of the solution. Or such is the hope as one who usually sits in the lofty heights in the Roost far above the sandbox known as WoT ...

That would be great but does anyone think that the people that call themselves journalists nowadays are capable of having them? and I don't mean just gaming journalism but journalism in general as it has become more "yellowed" in general. I really think we need to demand a higher standard of quality from the people that are to be spokespersons for the industry.

I watch a lot of the IQ squared debates, I yet to see someone who isn't of some esteem on the panel. Meanwhile video games have a people that aren't even able to dress properly and give some appearance of professionalism.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Well, Wikipedia is backpeddaling. Two editors changed their votes. Ryulong might not get banned.

They went from permaban to banned for a year.

Leigh Alexander being a bad bad journalist.

TotalBiscuit's reply to accusations from Extra Credits.

The whole point of GamerGate can be seen in those two links and also the weird lack of understanding from anti-GG side. The problem isn't doing a PR piece for your friends or getting paid to do a PR piece. The problem is not disclosing that information. It really is that simple.

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

It's we who are not understanding them. Disclosing personal relationships and possible collusions is a breach of privacy and discussing them publicly is harrasment. 'Ethical standards' is just a smokescreen for racist, conservative and reactionary inclusion by right-wing old men that has forgotten that the progressive world left them long ago.

For those of you who heard about a guy claiming his college's video game club got attacked with mace by a SJW, the story is appearing to be true: http://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2u17mr/real_life_macing_event_verified_best_they_can_by/

While it can't be 100% verified, from the extent of what's been shown it seems very likely to be true. Not that any news organizations will likely report on it....

Was it about an argument about ethics in journalism? Was the perpetrator rightously triggered by feeling harrassed?
