Make a new game though. All this remastered stuff is kinda sad and targeted at people who want to remember what it was like to be young. A texture pack and some gui changes does not mean you can charge full price again. 

 

At some point a stanky old matress can't be restored to the honeymoon suite centerpiece it once was.

I tend to agree with this part. I also think not everything old needs to be "improved/remastered." *glances at Star Wars and other things*

Apparently there are some major bugs in the release as well.

I don't remember it being $15 on the original release. :p It's marginally more expensive than the 'standard' $10 GOG release of old titles that haven't had any tweaks or extras like the commentary track, so it's a fair enough premium. Especially since my original CD is some 700km away from me at the moment.

Sometimes remastereds are just there to let new people play it. Grim Fandango hasn't been on sale in probably over a decade.

 

The stinky matress analogy only works if you think games somehow decay. It's still a good game by all accounts, unless you're obsessed with graphics.

Shame there's no way to get a discount and not bother with the 'commentary' (goodie I can hear Schafer or $df_employee[$rand()]'s opinion on things). :p

 

No real rush to get this, debatable it'll pop on a sale for some time to come but might as well wait.

But there's something to be said for vintage cars... even if they don't have a/c, heaters in the seats, or airbags.

Old games are still good games. I'm not a nostalgia driven person, I've gone back to games I loved in the 90's, and some of them do not hold up, I often play old games I've never played before and enjoy them thoroughly. Some of the design choices of new games make them significantly worse than old games. It's worth making old games accessible, maintaining and improving them. I'd rather have a large pool of quality games to buy than have more new mediocre games each year. Some old games require quality of life modifications, either through arcade heritage or system limitation, some things can be incredibly annoying.

 

What DoubleFine are doing is good, the lighting is a vast improvement, textures are better now, and I hear the soundtrack's improved. I don't have as much love for Grim as a lot of people but it is a rare example of good plot, characters, and acting in video games, I can literally watch a let's play of it from start to end, and it's almost as enjoyable as a good TV series. Some of the voice acting is some of the best in games, some of it is bad, the soundtrack is great. The movement system is awful, the puzzles are irritating, you can get lost in dialogue trees that are way too large and have required triggers, selection in the environment can be fustrating, backtracking can be slow, and cycling through your inventory would be much faster with a menu. I didn't like Glottis, that got old fast. Is it a great game? Not really, on first playthrough there's way too many problems with the gameplay, and the gameplay doesn't have much replayability. Why was this game not an animated movie or TV series? Is not a complement to a game.

I am still pissed about the Monkey Island remakes. I think they are both good looking and I don't even mind the voice over... but they ruined the (non-gamepad) controls and you are unable to skip dialog without switching to the original version, which made them both impossible to enjoy for me. What a waste of money.

What he’s got planned is an open worldish (“but not necessarily outdoors”) RPG, sci-fi, PC, probably first-person, chapter-like structure, brand new setting, add “ins” rather than add-ons, and a Passion System. 

 

It definitely sounds interesting!

PC gamers rejoice! Dragon's Dogma[ Online is coming out for the PC.

We all kind of saw this coming (in much the same way we saw Morrowind online coming, except it didn't), so I can't say I'm surprised.

 

Disappointed but not surprised. The original game's a great game deserving of a better polished sequel.

Fahrenheit is one of the worst games I've ever played. The plot is nonsensical, the voice acting is awful, the characters and dialogue are really bad, and the gameplay mostly consists of QTE, including climbing up by virtue of pressing left or right for each grab/step. There's an interactive QTE sex scene, segments where you just piss about until timed events happen, and a lot of the time the game is a 3rd person fixed camera, from the most fustrating angles imaginable, like walking towards the camera.

I miss the days of tighter and narrower sprawly environments, like say the Spencer Mansion in Resident Evil, or even more recently, the Asylum in Arkham Asylum. It carries the good parts about backtracking, where familiarity with the environment felt nice and intuitive.. the place environment became home. Most open world settings as of late feel very unforgettable and unnecessarily padded.. to keep it on topic in regards to Levine, I'd say BioShock 1 had it right with Rapture. I hope this open world thing is just another phase the industry is going through before the next big thing arrives.

You know, Skyrim happened, and now everyone wants slice of this pie. Same like it was with MMOs few years ago. Every single open world game I played was so boring after a while, and as you say, the setting of them and story is completely forgettable.

He might be controversial sometimes, but this episode is exactly taken from my mind... I sometimes wish, that we could again get new Final Fantasy with HD prerendered backgrounds and static cameras. FF IX-2 made this way in collaboration with Sakaguchi-san would satisfy most of my wet dreams... Unfortunately this will never happen :(
