USA Mid-Term Election Results

So I won't deny that I'm disappointed with the results. The Republicans appear to have  taken the House and Senate, this was predicted by many political pundits so its not a complete surprise

But my question is really towards those people who voted for the Republicans. I am interested in the main reasons why? Is it because the USA economy isn't doing well..no it can't be that because the USA economy has recovered nicely. Is it because Obama is some kind of warmonger....no he has avoided conflicts.

And then I want to ask what is the political objective of the Republicans winning the House and Senate..what does this mean?

And I see Oregon has voted to legalize  recreational Marijuana. Third state to do so :)

Watching CNN several commentators are saying that a major shift towards the Republican side from voters is the perceived lack of action around ISIS and Ebola

Is that really what is considered a failure of the Obama presidency? Or rather a lacklustre response...what more do people expect? Must the USA ground troops to fight ISIS?

Youth tend to vote democratic. There aren't any hot topic issues or causes nationally -or more saliently, in middle America that's rallying the youth vote. In 08, democrats won the both the House and Senate due in large parts because of the excitement and candidacy of Obama, that permeated over to other races. Every subsequent election afterwards, the youth turnout has declined worst and worst, so therefore democrats lose more and more seats nationally.

I know the voter turnout for my state was pathetic.

I'm involved through work, with various Registrar of Voters, and spoke with election officials from three different counties in Northern CA, and this is the lowest turnout of any general election on record.

Very interesting, so we are talking about voter apathy amongst the youth and the Republicans energising there voter base and getting people to vote? Or has the Republican turnout also been bad ?

No. That's propaganda.

Few people are voting along those lines. I imagine if you lived in the US, you might, as you suck up propaganda and splurge it out as if it's fact a heck of a lot, but CNN is talking out of their ass on this.

As for the Republicans winning the senate, and gaining their largest majority in the house since WW2 this line is applicable: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Can't speak for other states but voter apathy is certainly a factor in California. Of course, there is no Senate seat up for election and no hotly contested statewide races either. Hell, the Democratic Governor easily won re-election and he didn't even have to campaign. Low turnout is expected ( less than 50% of eligible voters).

It's the battleground states that determines who wins the congressional majority, and democrats weren't able to energize their base beyond Union voters and minorities. Even then, there aren't enough of them turning out, let alone fickle youth voters.

I'm a bit surprised my state voted down some Indian casinos, seemed like easy money with minimal impact.  But other than that, yeah, no surprise.  The pendulum swings over to the Republicans, and I expect they will do very little differently but will gesticulate wildly and spin it so they all sound great compared to the demonic democrats.   :getlost:

Obviously older people are bored and have nothing better to do than to vote ?

Well, Senators are on a 6-year cycle.  And, 6 years ago was a wave election for the Democrats, with huge turnout by people who were pissed at W and/or wanted to vote for the first black President.  That led to a number of Senate wins for the Democrats in states that are normally bad bets for them.  To a great degree, those Senators have just lost their re-election bids.  That's why the map was bad for the Democrats.  Plus, low-turnout off-year elections usually go to the party whose supporters are more excited or angry about stuff.  And, yeah, there are a lot of people who are angry at the President for a variety of reasons.

The one race I observed relatively closely was the surprise Republican win for the MD governorship.  And that was a case where, quite simply, the Democrats nominated an awful candidate who ran an ineffective campaign, and the core Democratic electorate that usually carries the state (i.e., the DC burbs and the city of Baltimore) just didn't have anything to get excited over.  With the House and statehouse districts aggressively gerrymandered and no Senate race this year, the gubernatorial race was the main thing that was supposed to draw core-Democratic constituencies to the polls.  And Anthony Brown made a terrible pitch-- his campaign's scare tactics were ineffective (he focused heavily on Hogan's anti-gun-control record, which is an unpopular position in MD, but voters know that a rollback of firearm restrictions has no chance of getting through the Assembly) and he never did much to rebut the Hogan campaign's main point on taxes.

No. Older folks are generally more informed, and also less likely to be 'bored'. Being bored is something that only happens to mentally lazy folks. That it's so acceptable and common to even say 'I'm bored' these days speaks to just how mentally lazy so many people are.

Younger people are generally less informed, and less likely to get involved as they generally think they have less skin in the game. This has always been the case, but it is more and more true as time has gone on these last few decades. Older people are also generally more inclined to have the teensy bit of discipline it takes to go to the polls, whereas younger people are more inclined to have entertaining themselves as their priority of the day and be busy doing that.

It's nice to see Americans to finally wake up from their socialistic dream when it turned in to a nightmare.

Now all they need is an actual president in the place of a historical joke.

....

Obviously you haven't got the faintest clue what socialism is. Obama isn't even ~close~ to being a socialist. He's not even a social democrat. Please, stop posting utter nonsense.
