Divinity: Original Sin

Recommended Posts

It's now on GOG.  It would cost me $50 for a download version. No game not even BG2 is worth that.  Too bad too with all the praise the game is getting. I'll have to wait it seems.

You could have gotten it on the Gray Market site (like Kinguin.net) for a 20 bucks or so.  Those may be steam keys only, but the steam version of D:OS is DRM free.

Truly an extraordinary game. :aiee: No screenshot can do justice to the pretty pretty. And the music ... christ.

Have only played an hour, but it feels as though I got my money's worth, already. Started with a fighter and a rogue, brunette and redhead. Very attractive pair with posh Brit accents. Love it.

All Stop. On Screen.

To clarify a bit on class selection, all the options presented are just presets/templates which pick the starting stats, perks and starting active abilities for you. (The latter is a bit confusing, you have to click the little box besides the abilties to swap them out) You can turn any class into any other class by customising them.

A small caveat though is that starting equipment is not customisable, so actually the right thing to do would be to choose the class that starts with the equipment you want, then customise it to give it the stats you want. e.g. If you want to play a two-handed fighter, don't choose the Fighter class (which will start with a sword and shield), but choose the Knight class instead, then customise it to swap out the paladin-ish abilties for more fightery stuff.

"So I take you never bought any new game in your life? its 50$ for 50-100 hours of fun that is like 1$ for each hour."

I've bought more games than years you've been alive, bud. And, the some. And, that's only in the past year or so.

1. There is no guarantee any game is fun.

2.  50-100 hours. L0L Yeah.

3.  When I buy things I want to own them. I prefer my games in boxes not on the evil internet. It's one thing tos pend $5 on a crappy passe game on GOG. Itr's another to spend $50 on a new release that might be crappy or merely okay. That's a HUGE risk.

And, while everyone is praising it as 'the best thing ever'; I know they are lying and over hyping it. At best, I'm sure I'll have fun  and it'll be a good game. At worst it'll be Alpha Protocol all over again.

Hype can sometimes lead people astray, people said they loved Batman Arkham Asylum and it did nothing for me personally.  But I can't imagine any person who likes games like baldurs gate / magicka / with some turn based tactics thrown into combat disliking this title.  This is about the safest bet I've seen in a long time.  With one exception.  People who have only waded into heavily voiced rpgs like dragon age 2 and the mass effect series might get a bit shell shocked at the initial tedium if reading through all the text.  I did and I loved baldurs gate 2, but that came out a LONG time ago and I had to get used to more reading again.  Once you get over that hump I think you'd be fine.

I think this was totally worth the full purchase price, and I hope more people pay while it's high so the devs are rewarded more for their efforts.  I have spent far more to get far less in the past.

You will likely wait until this goes on sale, but I'll make a bet with you.  Once you do finally play this game, ask yourself was this title actually worth the full launch purchase price.  I bet you will say yes.

That's a silly way to do it. Why not just have no class then.  Not a big deal in the long run, though. Any class  that starts with an axe?

Not that I recall. But there are no weapon specialisations, just 1H or 2H, so it's easy enough to switch out once you reach town.

But yeah, while I'd like a flat out blank slate class with no background, like that offered in Shadowrun, it's not offered here. Part of it may be because they have a pre-written character history for each class to explain their becoming a Source Hunter. I don't know whether that has a gameplay effect down the line, however.

It's in to give people who don't care that much about character creation some templates to start with. You can find basic weapons for every profession before you get in the first serious fight. ;)

Yeah, but Shadowrun had the templates *plus* the option to start with a completely custom build with no class label.

I think that they decided against that as they didn't want to make starting item selection window in character creation, but instead every template has it own set of items. But hopefully they will add that in future patches so that you can build more imaginative characters with strange mix of items.

Well they could have just adjusted starting equipment to your skill selection, fairly straightforward given the way the skills are labelled. Instead I made the initial mistake of starting my Fighter with two-handed weapon skill but having to choose between a 1H sword+shield combo or ....a two-handed shovel.

Level eight and completed most of the Cyseal area yet I've yet to find a two-handed crushing weapon that I would have imagined would have been extremely useful against this encounter with undead skeletons past the most obnoxiously trapped house I have ever seen in an RPG.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

Not that I want to be spoiled in the least bit also don't want to miss out on a bunch of content but is there ever a point in the first map where you can't go back and complete quests? I seem to making good headway on The Mysterious Muder quest line and have a silly fear that once this quest is done, I'll be thrust into the second but in sure that can't b true correct?

Didn't you hear; everytime a RPG-gamer doesn't buy D:OS god kills a cat. I don't want it to be mine!
But no, I didn't notice you bought it  (posts on ignore doesn't help XD).

Only hotfixes so far for crashing issues (which I have yet to experience). There's a larger patch upcoming though with an unknown release date. Todays patch was 7.5mb, and the others were also around 25-50, so not sure where you got the 2GB from.

@ SadExchange; You can return at will if you so desire...

No restriction, except for a couple of quests involving the key players. The only thing you should look out for, though you've very probably done this already, is visit Theyleron's house and speak to him and Eveyln about stuff.

Why play it now when there's a 2 gig patch coming out every three days.

Because the game has run marvellously since Day 1.

I have only two issues and one wish:

issues:

- simply silly armor designs, especially women on high heels :D

- no two handed crushing weapon... (shovel does not count)

wish:

- dynamic weather and day/night cycle

Other than that, i simply love the game. So many viable combinations, although easiest so far was ranger (ranged dps) /witch (summons/buffs/debuffs) /cleric (heals and melee dps) /warrior (melee dps + tank)
