An unknown eastern European developer making a 40 hour RPG as their first game to compete on the world market with Bioware then proceed to sell around 3 million copies of the game by word of mouth.... fiasco?

not economically. I was expecting a better NWN with Eastern European folklore instead of Tolkienesque medieval fantasy, and I didn't get that. instead I got an action RPG with soft porn elements.

What are you suggesting, that they join Troika on the dole?

yes, if making memorable RPG experiences means folding in eventually.

Besides they're making a cyberpunk game and cyberpunk isn't exactly hot stuff now.

hence my balls comment.

Well Sapkowski is standard epic fantasy, there isn't all that much specifically Slavic about his prose. The Witcher's candid conversations, a more relaxed attitude towards nudity and a particular brand of "matter of fact" pessimism are definitely Slavic though, maybe a few of the monsters and a bit area design too.

I was only passively aware that the game was in production so I went into it without any expectations.

Like Serrano I also don't like their marketing. They blow their own trumpet far too much for my tastes... Like the W3 having 70 awards even though its nothing more than a 5 minute Youtube clip currently.

They didn't give themselves those awards. They were granted from press who saw a lengthy demo at the last E3. Back on topic. What do you guys think of real time dodging and stuff in the combat? Pretty big departure from Origins.

I actually agree with Volo, CDP does suck. for a company with so much money whey sure don't like to take risks when it comes to video games. it must've taken someone with huge balls to sign off on a game OTHER THAN the Witcher. they're pathetic, and I'm never buying anything from them after that fiasco the first Witcher game was

I didn't know this was the blasphemous opinions thread, I hope that includes any GOG games.

Considering that they are sinking millions of dollars on the development of a PC game (arguably not a wide market) I understand why they're being cautious.

BTW you must really think Bethesda sucks, after all they only have made that one game series and that one other game that's like that one game series.

Or we can all agree that you just didn't like the Witcher and refrain from grandiose statements on the note of: "Everything Sucks, Wahh!"

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I was under the impression twitcher 3 has been confirmed for ps4/xbone as well, or do those suddenly fall under the umbrella of PC, as well?

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

W3 is on all platforms, except on the corpse that is the WiiU. Doesn't make it any less of a risk considering the advertised size of the game and production values though. With its reflex based combat it would make no sense to skip the consoles.

I'm one of those few people who thought Witcher 2 was vastly more entertaining than the first one - But then again, perhaps I simply can't see the appeal in endless dull fetch quests, useless secondary weapons, not being able to store weapons in inventory, cluster**** interface -- plus combat involving clicking, and if you're really advanced, click on them again.

To be fair though -- At least you could drink the damn potions in mid-combat in the first game plus there were no unfair quicktime events, aside from that I had more fun with the Witcher and thought the political intrigue made for a more entertaining story there beyond the usual fantasy story, partially involving racism against dwarves, elves & goldfish etc.

Hey, I disliked TW2's locked content story branching mechanic, but I wouldn't say that was not a risk.

To try to support you in staying on topic, there is dodging but not of the twitchy variety.  From what the devs have said, it seems to be an activated ability, and you click on the ground to indicate which direction you want to dodge.  They haven't said much else about it but I believe each class has its own particular version.

I wouldn't call it a fiasco myself. But, yous eem surprised?

Witcher 1 was heavily pimped by BIO themselves. If you try to poo poo that connection than you just poo poo the whole iidea of 'word of mouth' that you mentioned sicne BIO has lots of people they can connect with .

And, yeah, it sold 3mil copies but it did so because it got like 25,000 releases and the fanboys bought each one. L0L I don't know if Witcher actually has a million buyers sicne people just keep rebuying it. Heh.

It should be pointed out that CCP nearly went bankrupt as well so all that money they supposedly paid barely  did much.

Not to mention all the  projects they continually cancel.

\

They have no original. Their one IP is based on someone else's work, and they have literally beat it to death.

Good on them.   Sale their Witcher 20. :)

I've never got why "twitch gameplay" is supposed to be bad.

Because many people hate it?

It's not that it's inherently bad, just many people don't like action elements so they prefer RPGs without them.Simple as that.

Others don't care or even prefer it.

The first two were released for the PC and later ported to consoles, if history is to be repeated The Witcher 3 will come first to PCs and it will be later ported.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I agree with this, and I'd just add that in a RTwP game like the Dragon Age series, having any twitch-based gameplay wouldn't fit well with the usual combat mechanics at all.

no, it is not that simple, I'm afraid. many people don't like action combat done badly. and from my experience, there was only one game that did it right. all others are complete and utter crap. and I hate developers that don't want to put in the effort to make combat in their games good but at the same time don't want to have turn-based combat either.

Please do enlighten us on the one game that did it right, because I know we'll all agree.

Many will regard it as bad because it is counter to one of the critical factors in a game being an RPG. In an RPG there should be a primacy of the development of the avatar's skill over the player's skill (/having quick reactions), and twitch gameplay is very much about player reaction time. So combat in a typical twitch shooter is all about the skill of the player, a hybrid like Deus Ex or System Shock 2 has it depending a bit on both, and a 'pure' RPG like Fallout or even Baldur's Gate has it be wholly dependant on the avatar's skills- or at least, as much as it can be wholly dependant, the player still has to make the decisions about who to attack for example, but it is entirely the avatars' skills and equipment that determine probability of hitting or being hit.

But yeah, it's only subjectively bad, not objectively so.

I actually have to back Vol up here.

CDP made their name off BioWare's coat tails. And are one of the biggest distributors in Poland. You should see the types of ridiculously patriotic and xenophoblic **** gets said about them on any gaming forum. "We need to support them because they are a small foreign company". People buy their games three times over because they think they are helping some poor third world country company. It's entirely offensive and ignorant.

This is to say nothing of how CDP portrays romance in their games.
