Playing a bit of SWTor and following Allan's Amnesia let's play (playing by proxy? ;))

 

Wouldn't mind a good new sci-fi setting mmorpg now for the incoming rainy autumn days, but alas, there aren't any. Fantasy there fantasy here fantasy everywhere :getlost:

Wouldn't mind a big budget WH40K Inquisitor based MMO. Probably never going to happen though. Smaller scale and f2p seems to be the future for this kind of game, if somebody wants to establish themselves 9and survive).

I feel like immersing myself in some graphic-shiny exploration game ... but I don't think one of those exists. It's all MMO or shooter/action or rpg with less emphasis on graphic shiny. Something with the crafting/items of rpg's but otherwise mostly an exploration sim. :p

The original Tomb Raider game fits your description minus the crafting, you had to scavenge for ammo instead, but at least you had to explore to find those hidden ammo caches :)

 

Probably why I found the games from III and onwards disappointing compared to the original. Turned into bad 3rd person shooters instead of exploration games (don't get me started on TR - Anniversary, it was so bad I found it offensive).

Tomb Raider, a proper Tomb Raider (not this most recent torture porn bull****), with challenging puzzles and platforming and devious traps, minus all the combat, all of it, and with larger areas to explore, is a dream game of mine.

Somewhat in the same boat, except I'm not tired of combat, I'm tired of bad combat. Just installed Stalker Clear Sky as I haven't played the sequels yet, and hope that gives a little satisfaction. It was either that or reinstall something Bethesda as it seems they're the only ones who can make a game about walking around somewhat interesting despite all the hate thrown their way.

Really? How come? It's not as good as the original, but still about bazillion times better than legends which was boring as hell badly made shooter. Haven't still tried underworld even though I have owned it for years. Not going to touch the new QTE Raider unless I get it for free, maybe not even then.

 

Anniversary did streamline pretty badly my favourite level of TR (Tomb of Tihocan), but I thought the game otherwise was fun and atmospheric.

Streamlining aside, Crystal Dynamics turned Lara from a badass adventurer who raided tombs for kicks into a whiny kid with daddy issues raiding tombs to find her mommy. With two buffoon sidekicks.

 

QTE Raider sold over 4 million last I checked, while both Anniversary and Underworld flopped badly, so the franchise is doomed.

Starpoint Gemini 2. It's currently early access alpha. I'm enjoying it, worth a look if space games are you thing. I enjoyed the first one once it was fully patched.

 

Game plays like Starfleet Command/Star Wolves, with rpg skills and perks. Trading/mining/pirating/bounty hunting all seem like valid paths but it's still too early to tell how valid. Graphics are nice(no X-rebirth). Ships tend to be to brittle though, I'm hoping they are beefed up as I prefer the fights to last longer. There is currently more than enough ships/upgrades to buy, pirates or freighters to pirate. Plus random mercenary missions. However while you can currently buy carriers, I don't believe the ability to launch them or hire pilots for them is implemented, a shame yes but still a feature I'm looking forward to using.

 

It is ALPHA though, don't expect a campaign yet or a feature complete game. Even in it's alpha state, there is enough here(IMO) if you liked the first one or the Star Wolves series to would recommend it.

There was a game called Frontiers that got funded on Kickstarter a while ago. Seems like it will focus mostly on exploring and survival, as well as crafting.

That sound pretty good.  

 

I'd love a big open world Tomb Raider with no enemies.  Talk to villagers, read ancient manuscripts, explore the land, descend into caves and catacombs, scale cliffs, avoid fiendish traps, piece together clues, find relics.  And all without having to gun down a couple crazed cult members, or mummies, or ninjas, or whatever, every few minutes.  Man, that would be awesome.

 

This Frontiers game sounds as close as anything else to that.

that concept sounds really fun to me, exploring a land looking for lost treasures WITHOUT running gunfights against armies of pirates/cultists?  sign me up!

from a quick read, Frontiers seems to be closer to what i had in mind than Wander, but i love the idea of something akin to tomb raider or uncharted (ie an indiana jones type game, but one where combat is rare/optional and not a major component of the game)

 

taking ALL combat out of a game does limit the feeling of danger, and thus the feeling of tension, which is something important to me in a game.

I was the opposite. I found it completely lacked in atmosphere. Large levels meant to be explored were reduced to corridors and badly implemented combat was implemented for combat sakes and contrived boss battles added for boss battles sake (to ensure that it was completely cliche and formulaic), not because it made any sense. I think I mostly resent it because the original was an exploration game and anniversary a mediocre corridor shooter with tiny, cramped levels (and don't get me started on QTE's, at least the original had some nice FMV's for it's time, even if they look naive by 2013 standards).

 

Never made it to the "Atlantis" levels, uninstalled it in disgust 2/3 of the way through and completed a game of the original instead. Just *so* much more fun, low polygon gfx included.

Brains a bit too fried for actually playing games so I'm tracking down a bug in an Oblivion mod which causes vampires to spawn with no pants... :dancing:

Frontiers looks interesting, although perhaps not the level of "graphic shiny" I'm in the mood for. :p

 

Still, conceptually it's closer to what I might be interested in. Sometimes I wish you could combine the sense of explore/discover of Myst with the 3D-shiny environment and some of the task orientation of rpg's. Which doesn't mean I want devilishly difficult puzzles, btw.

 

I dunno...sometimes I want a virtual fantasy world that doesn't have a ton of "point" to it, other than to pretend you live there and are wandering, exploring, meeting people, surviving. I don't even care about having an over-reaching story arc. What if I want to pretend I'm a wandering Bard who just likes to travel the world, sing for his supper, explore a dungeon/tomb/cave now and then, see stuff, collect souvenirs? Something like that.

Thinking about it further, I do/can understand wanting some level of tension sometimes etc, but seems like you can get that tension from something other than some enemy attacking me. There's plenty of tension/stress in real life that has nothing to do with combat, after all.

 

If you're exploring a cave, can't there be tension from wondering if the roof or entrance is going to cave in on you? Whether that crumbly old bridge is going to hold your weight and what measures you could do to help ensure it could? Whether there's a huge colony of diseased bats and if you disturb them you might get bit? Or even just a visual/sound tension, from having to walk a narrow cliff edge with the wind screaming around you and getting vertigo looking down?

 

I'm not sure I even know exactly what I want, exactly. I just know I haven't found/seen it yet. :)

for it to be really good, i think it would require a big budget or an incredibly talented team, and i bet most publishers would be too scared to greenlight a game that broke such new ground

 

then again, it could get pitched as something like a AAA minecraft with more focus on exploration and less on building stuff?

Got my Demon Hunter up to level 44.  I just landed an awesome crossbow.  So much damage (plus additional stats), plus the fact it's a one-handed weapon so I can equip something strong in my other hand at the same time.

 

At first, I thought level 60 was out of the question, figuring it would take too long.  At this rate, I should reach 60 by the weekend.

Yeah, I don't really expect to find one, at least not any time soon. Does make one wish they were good with programming/gaming engines themselves. I'll be interested to see how that Frontiers game turns out.

 

I know there have been some discussions on the topic of non-combat in games before...it's not that I mind fight-combat existing, it's more that it's just so same-y, with everything in the game designed around being better at it in order to progress...and at this point it's become dull as dishwater. Going through the motions.

 

Maybe I'll go back to Cribbage. :)
