GoG vs Steam and platform availability

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just a quick question.

I see that the choice between GoG and Steam is available for backers, and being a tree-hugging anti-DRM hippy, I'd obviously prefer the GoG version. My concern is that the FAQ states that if you prefer multi-platform, you should opt for Steam. Does this mean that the Mac version won't be available via GoG, even though they now supply Mac versions of games where possible?

Does anyone have on info on this?

Cheers,

DF

steam has win, linux and mac support.

gog has win and is working on mac as far as i know, but it has no linux yet.

each platform uses a unique installation system, so if that is not configured for use with each of the OS, you cant use the games you got from them on that OS. a way for gog to circumvent this, would be to offer for download a copy of the retail version (putting all the dvd contents into a folder and deliver it without the gog installer, so you can use the obsidian's multi OS configured installer that those who get a physical copy will be using)

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.

for the drm free version for mac and windows they will use gog.com (see quote from update 27):

  • Steam: Steam currently supports Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. We will be offering you a SteamPlay key. This means with one key, you can play the game on any supported platform of your choice! The Steam version will also offer in-game achievements and we are going to look at adding Steam cloud support for an even better multi-platform experience. Please note that Steam uses DRM (digital rights management) however. DRM comes with this platform and is not something we can disable. If you want a DRM-free option, please see GOG.com below.
  • GOG.com: We will be offering DRM-free options based on the platforms that GOG supports at the time of us shipping the game. Currently, this means you only have a Windows DRM-free option, but apparently some big news for Mac users is coming… tonight, and hopefully good news for Linux users too down the road.

You may have noticed that there isn’t a DRM-free Linux version listed; that’s true today, but by the time we launch, we’ll have one available.

I think they aren't sure how they distribute the drm free version for linux. See this thread

Well one thing with the Steam version is that as far as I know, you buy any version of a game on steam, and it will let you play both mac and linux versions as well if available so no need to get multiplr copies. That might be what they mean when saying multi platform should opt for steam.

It is a very minor scam they've set up on Steam; they're doing it so that they can get the cents that you cannot use for purchases. For a single person it is just miniscule; for millions of patrons ... it means big dollars that no one will miss ... or at least not care about. The cards when collected in a set (which you have to buy half of) give a badge, a 'level up' on your id and at every ten levels an increased chance of cards/ booster packs. For each set you collect you gain tiny bonuses such as backgrounds for profiles and unique emoticons and discount cards ie 70% off such and such a purchase.

If you're smart you can use this boom to your advantage and sell your cards; I managed to scrape together enough for a few on sale games.

You can also get the smaller DLC packs for games you already own. :)
