Do you really think that price ($(1,000,000) is including VAT?

Yes, since it's a consumer product being advertised within the EU (Game UK). :)

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

I had missed that, I saw the price being in dollars and assumed the marketing stunt would have been originating from an american site. Good catch, and yeah ars technica probably didn't take VAT into account.

Though that'd still only bring it up to about 800k (if using the Swedish VAT of 25%, which is lower in most places). And I don't think a $250,000 car costs $200,000 to insure for a year.

Their maths is also off when they say that "All told, we came up with a total cost of only $629,974.69 for the contents (...) This means you'd be overpaying by about more than 50 percent of the actual value of the contents (...)" The amound you are overpaying though is $1,000,000 - $629,974.69 = $370,025.31 roughly 37% (which to the mathematically less inclined is less than 50% not "about more") ;)

Of course if VAT is on top of that, then it goes even higher and the "overpaying" goes even lower. not sure how much VAT would be but if, for simplicity's sake we'd go with something like 20% then we'd add 125,994.938. Then we'd pass the 750k mark and the overpaying would drop below 25%.

The other thing I am not sure is how taxes for the pack itself go. Would VAT not in reality be paid twice? Once for the 1 mil paid by the customer purchasing the pack from Deep Silver and once for Deep Silver purchasing the stuff to provide in the pack?

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

VAT differs from a US style sales tax (AFAIK) in that companies that have to collect VAT get to deduce the VAT they pay for what makes up their end product. So generally only consumers have to pay the full VAT and companies (and their pricing) often thus deal with VAT-less prices. Gross simplification etc.

Re: cost of insuring, clearly you've never been a young man with a ludicrously powerful car. ;)

Cars never interested me. And my flat mates dispute if ever I was truly young :)

Coloured pencils, sketchpads etc never seem to require inn-sewer-ants.

That's how Canada's GST works too.

Microsoft is doing more flip-flopping than John Kerry in the election of 2004.

While good that MS will no longer be spying on you (visually at least), it does mean that the console now ships with a non-optional $100 paperweight.

I'd not be surprised in the least if it becomes an optional paperweight. It's a very good way to make up the price difference between it and the PS4, and they've already gone some way towards making up the performance difference. I just don't see MS caring that much about people thinking they're spying, whereas being able to reduce the price of their console to a more affordable level and having another peripheral to sell, that I can see.

Kind of depends on how the Kinect is connected kinected to the main console as to whether that is practical, of course.

...and they've already gone some way towards making up the performance difference.

They seriously haven't, it's a tiny overclock, PS4 is still quite a bit more powerful.

Yeah, some way, not most of the way- and they are still stuffed unless they can drop the base price, hence the suggestion as to why kinect may be going as compulsory.

I'm not sure how much the power difference will matter practically for non exclusive games since the underlying architecture is so similar, I'd suspect in most cases they'd simply be written with the on3's lower specs in mind rather than the PS4's anyway.
