Volourn Posted October 5, 2013 Share Posted October 5, 2013 Runner, Runner: Good drama thriller. Didn't care for the lead much and the 'twist' was lame and predictable yet silly. It's pretty said when the villain is more cheerable than the so clled 'heroes'. That's boring. if I want the original, I'd read it. I'd rather watch a hot redhead female elf than not watch a hot redhead elf female. Just sayin'. The Hobbit book isn't very good once you get older than eight and everything's that been added has created a more streamlined experience. GIGN captain and some of his men get captured by dissidents, and from there a web of complexities and morales involved to to resolve the situation peacefully will be presented to the viewer in a slow, intelligent and no-nonsense fashion. Goes beyond typical terrorists gonna terrorist banalities. Americans would have just dropped a bomb on it and called it a day. Rain makes everything better. I think the movie is too easy / simple on it's theme. It makes youth pregnancy look a bit like a non issue. Generally the movie is way too good at avoiding any critical issue that could or would come up. It seems to be no problem to find cool new parents, it seems to be no problem to overcome the social / school problems, it seems to be no problem at all to simply give up the child at birth, and stuff like that. Juno becomes pregnant and nothing changes in her life, not while it's going on and not really after it is gone. So now I would say the movie is pretty mediocre at best. It has some funny moments, and I like the actors, but yeah... the movie is too good at downplaying every serious issue with a witty one-liner. 3 "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die." Fun film, great catchy opening - you can see why they ended up making 9 films - but the sex psychics seem to have wandered in from a porno film. A really bad one at that, and they take center stage for far too long. And yet I did think the film overall "worked" for a low-budget, direct to video 80s film. APOLLO 18 - found footage horror film; the idea of using a secret moon landing makes the "found footage" work - NASA is filming the mission and all the cameras for a moon walk make sense. And there a lot of nice creepy touches up until about halfway through when the monster is more or less revealed. And then the film devolves a good bit; the motivations of the creatures doesn't match up with what they're doing and the two astronauts don't actually act very intelligently. Lot of potential but not as much payoff. IRON MAN 3 - I still enjoyed the film. The dodge on the Mandarin works well, Pierce is a good villain and I think the thing holds together well with the other two making a complete sort of statement about Stark as a character. AGENT CARTER - the Marvel One-Shot Short, Hayley Atwell returns from Captain America. Its one year later and she's nominally a field agent but chained to her desk by a superior. Until working alone at night, she gets a call for a mission that gives her an opportunit...fun film, probably one of the better Marvel shorts if you liked Carter from the Cap film. Domnick Cooper shows up again as Howard Stark too (and an even funnier cameo by Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan). I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? It's mostly low-key, although I think the fairly intimate setting of Whedon's house along with the black and white style pushes that along. It's an interesting way of handling the setting of the play, even if they've kept the original Shakespearian dialogue. The actors for the most part do a pretty damn good job, although I think more gets conveyed with the physicality and expressions then the way they speak the words. I can't quite make up my mind on Alexis Denisofs "Benedict", for the most part he's good and especially for the physical pratfall aspects he plays up nicely, but there are a few moments he doesn't quite fit. Clark Greg's "Leonato" and Amy Acker's "Beatrice" pretty much rock out. Nathon Fillion's "Dogberry" pretty much comes out as that idiotic ass. The musical score is quite understated, but the moments it does kick in, it really hits the right emotional note. "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum." I like that Keanu Reeves kept his training up, not enough actors maintain the skills they learn for movies. There was one sentence in the film which elevated it for me, otherwise I would have been less kind. And I like that it was very different from most martial arts flicks, especially those made in Hong Kong. Remember: Argue the point, not the person. Remain polite and constructive. Friendly forums have friendly debate. There's no shame in being wrong. If you don't have something to add, don't post for the sake of it. And don't be afraid to post thoughts you are uncertain about, that's what discussion is for.---Pet threads, everyone has them. I love imagining Gods, Monsters, Factions and Weapons.
