Discussion about Caravans?!

Recommended Posts

Salve @ all!

So we have a huge World with 2 big citys! What about Caravans?

At the beginning we can join as a Mercenery, for earning little money.

Later maybe it's possible to create our own Caravan, to trade goods and make much more Money! =D

This could be a very intresting Feature. What do you think?

Welcome to the forums T-goblin,

I for one, would love to see different opportunities on the road between Big Big City 1 and Big Big City 2, Caravans, bandits, Knights Bridges and forts.

It would be cool if you could compete with other trade caravans, or be hired to protect one. Maybe organise a trade caravan guild (as your own faction) uniting the caravans in a single business where each has a monopoly on a separate set of good. (but better executed than the similar option in Fallout 3)

Remember: Argue the point, not the person. Remain polite and constructive. Friendly forums have friendly debate. There's no shame in being wrong. If you don't have something to add, don't post for the sake of it. And don't be afraid to post thoughts you are uncertain about, that's what discussion is for.

As long as the escort AI doesn't suck (like, say, Morrowind) or they take needlessly slow I don't mind doing escort quests...

Caravans generally appeared when the distance to be traveled was long and significant stretches were unsafe. Otherwise, the use of caravans is actually less efficient--you have to stockpile goods and personnel until the entire mass is ready to proceed. If the cities are ports, then trade may be easier by sea; you don't have to care for transport animals and carry extra feed.

I'd be a nice source of income/reputation/xp/fun to be able to take on a job as a caravan guard, and if it worked like in Fallout and Fallout 2, it'd even work fine for being a guard on a merchant ship as well, if the cities are port cities as mentioned.

Being able to assault caravans could be interesting as well.

That sounds boring. Walking back and forth between the major cities? That just sounds like a repeatable grinding quest. And the player is supposed to be the center of some world/cosmos-changing event by chance. This game isn't going to be Skyrim.

The only source of experience in P:E is by completing quests. You will receive zero experience for every combat encounter unless victory in that encounter is the end of a quest. Edited by AGX-17

The much more accurate term is "objectives." I mean, they could all be called "quests" in the game, but a quest is generally a goal that entails more than one objective.

Should we not start with some Ipelagos, or at least some Greater Ipelagos, before tackling a named Arch Ipelago? 6_u

And you could pick up a "quest" (mission/objective/what have you) consisting of escorting or assaulting a caravan. It could even be a repeatable source of xp in a game without combat xp.

I have noticed a few suggestions in these forums remind me of features already available in Red Dead Redemption.  And let me tell you, they were cool for about 5 minutes.

Stuff like repeatable quests/jobs, bland random encounters, business's, etc. strike me as stuff more suitable for an MMO or sandbox, both of which are struggling to not be boring.

Its a shame, because a lot of those elements are things us gamers asked for, but they just don't seem to pan out very well in turns of inspiring gameplay mechanics.
