Update #40: Orlan First Look and Ziets on Pantheon Design

Recommended Posts

* It looks like he only has 4 fingers (thumb+3 fingers). Although it might be a racial thing,  it'd be cool if the Fist of Law/Authority (on the sweater) had 4 fingers too. Perhaps the Organization is Orlan governed? It could also make that "Fist" somewhat new, I'm looking at it and thinking "Where have I seen that before?".

It's a common symbol of resistance, check google image search.

Though this particular one (white fist) sadly looks pretty much like the aryan white fist

lol. That is bad. bad bad bad. But it made me laugh.

And I just thought he was a member in a dart club. :)

About the symbol in the chest of the orlan, contrary to my first impression, the resistance is not hidden?  For underground organizations are often depicted as using signs recognized exclusively by their members rather than such noticeable symbols to anyone.

Are you sure it's resistance? Maybe it's the Arrowcatchers, first and last line of defence.

"Using this blood-stained dagger and my amazing cipher mind skills, I

can deduce the last user of this weapon and thus identify the killer.

Quite elementary my dear chaps."

He's just using PSI probably, aura reading or something.

>There's something wierd, spherelike, ball-like hanging on the satchel to

the side (Or is it something that blends into it from the background?).

Is that a "Tool" or merely "attire"?

It's a flintlock. The ball is to hit people when you're out of bullets/reloading.

A halfling psionic with a gun serving in city police.

Feels like a work of...

Lol, I didn't see the gun in perspective at all. It looked like something else (ofc I was looking for "something else" too :p).

My first message, so hail and well met!

Orlan looks really great. I always thought that hardcore fantasy races and species are something you would expect to be in almost all fantasy setting, and creating new ones is a chore; But hey, credit where credit is due. Looking forward to play as one, for sure. Also I like the idea of starting the whole world and inhabitants generation with creation of gods. As youngsters we would made up stuff for roleplay purposes the same way. Gods go first, duh.

Anyhoo, best regards :)

It could simply be a heraldic symbol of the local town or barony.

"Orlan" means "eagle" in Russian. I wonder if it's a coincidence that the character has bird-like features

it doesn't mean "eagle"

orly?

Белоголовый орлан = Haliaeetus leucocephalus = Bald eagle

point being: there's no word for "орлан" in English. or, what's more likely, there's not enough of a difference between the two to be called differently, so it's the same thing, and Russians are overcomplicating it.

Interesting aspects of godhood - seems similar to the many of the god pantheons (one series from back in the 80's which I can't remember the name) that depend on believers for the strength - so Gods have large portfolios but can lose their followers and power and be replaced - however as a slack and hash (or shoot and blow up) enthusiast, I like the lore but wonder how it willaffect the actual gameplay.   Guessing as stated many times, one's piety to the god will affect one's soul (quests, donations, defiling other gods temples...) - will it be a specialization of characters as well - similar to wizard specialist or dsome of the clerical specializatiion  in Icewind Dale and such (priest/follower of god of X- storm god-  has weather spells - but other types of spells are impossible or cost more...) Wonder if like in elder scrolls you will be become the priest/active recruiter for a god set up a temple for that god and your power will increase as you increase the wealth and following of the temple - but as you get more powerful you get the enemity of more powerful gods - and your god could become more demanding as they become more powerful - higher powers/benefits come with higher cost....Didn't think about the IP concerns - we all know about elves, dwarves, etc - but most of our knowledge is coming from IP - D&D, forgotten realms, other games, Lord of the rings...it;s easy to forget how much of commom knowledge is actually already owned/copyrighted...(a little sad also..- different topic)But back to topic - artwork looks nice - can't believe we are still about 2 yrs out from production and playing - I think this is the bad thing about kickstarter/crowd funding.  Anticipation! - I know what is coming - I know what it is going to be like, I know what i should ecxpect, andI know I won't see anything or play anything for a long time...makes me cry.  At least when the evil producers were doing it there was usually only a 6 month delay of actual anticcpation (lots of rumours - but the def rumblings didn't start until there was a start of production... ok that's not true - sorry I lied... BUT I wish there were segment releases - almost like dlc  much earlier  in production - especially for those of us who already paid - ahhh sigh, the need for instant gratification generation... Looks good - as a non techie guy these updates work for me... until then, make mine Marvel...

love the look of the orlan.  new races in fantasy are hard to do, and this one appears to be a success so far in the design department

Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete.

Thought it looked eminently sensible and hard wearing, fits the character and his role.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

Tea for the teapot!

So far there seems to be a conceptual focus on the gods themselves rather than the role of religion(s)/worship in the world.

I like the FR approach to gods but I don't want PE gods to be a "cargo cult" imitation of those. A lot of concepts are mentioned in this update, like "portfolio", "pantheon" and "manifesting in the mortal world" could have very different interpretations compared to those which apply in the FR setting. I urge Obsidian to ask themselves critical questions about everything when designing gods.

  • Why would you believe in "true" gods? If the gods don't regularly prove they exist, there should be a number of non- believers, as well as followers of false gods (gods who do not exist).
  • Why would you worship a god at all? They don't grant spells, but apparently they interfere in mortal affairs and even kill people. What's in it for the believers?
  • Why would a god want to be worshipped?
  • How did the gods communicate what they stand for to the mortals? In other words, how do we know that an unknown strangler is really the god of law and vengeance? How do people know anything about the gods at all?
  • What does it mean to "have a portfolio"?
  • If gods are real, are there any conflicting faiths? We already mentioned "followers", but if all gods are real, why is worshipping one over another more than a Pepsi vs. Cola fight?
  • Exactly how powerful are gods, and why don't they appear in public all the time? If gods can strangle people when they're alone, why couldn't they do it in public when everyone's looking? Especially if a deity is "good", why don't they help people all the time?

That's a nice painting, but FFS the Orlan is just a small bloke with comedy ears.

I like the ears, personally. Altho I admit they seem a bit out of place (the length) because of the overall human appearance/proportions outside of that. Still....I like the ears. They make me think of bobcats.

I think he's trying to mind-meld with that blade, to get it tell him who used it to murder someone.

Am disappointed.

I was hoping for a race that was less 'human-with-slightly-exaggerated-ears.'

That's a civilized Orlan at least. 'Uncivilized' ones might look more like Grug with ears :p

Thanks, and yes - it's true. Until recent updates received via e-mail this whole forum thing was merely "meh". As for Orlan and my previous message; I think that it might be some halfling (small and hairy) / gnome (tinkery) / goblin (big pointy ears) mix judging from the desription and picture. I like that.

PS. Mr. Sensuki, thumbs up for Geralt of Rivia. Mine is from a crappy motion picture.

It would be of small avail to talk of magic in the air...

I don't want to argue, but perhaps you should learn Russian before jumping to conclusions? On a side note, 'orlan' is probably not based on a Russian word at all and this is just a coincidence. We don't know who came up with it and why.
