Anthropomorphic animal races in Project Eternity?

What do you think?

  1. 1. Would you tolerate anthropomorphic animal races (like the Khajiit in TES:Skyrim) in Project Eternity?

  2. 2. Do you think humans are boring as a playable race? Is it arrogant to place ourselfs into every fantasy setting?

As someone who have played the Shinning Force series or FEDA Emblem of Justice (translated) more than a decade ago, I don't see any problem with any kind of race.

Though the ironclad characters looked somewhat wrong as they looked like humans with hoods; the ones with their "unique" fighting style/pose (or different sprites) or light armor and a "monsterlike" stance while still wielding a weapon were cool.

But It might be too hard to animate different fighting styles now compared to the simple spritesheets of years ago.

Furries ruin everything. EVERYTHING.

But there are some rare issues when I'm perfectly ok with animalistic\beastlike races.

Best example - Skaven from Warhammer. main reason - furries can't make porn of them and they are not fluffy cute critters but badass cowardly cruel plague and flea ridden cannibal rats.

This, I can tolearate.

It's strange, because I've read plenty of sci-fi books with humanoid but not-human races, and I like them there just fine. Don't know if anyone's read Alan Dean Foster's Icerigger trilogy, but I loved the cat-like race in it (the Tran). Their iceskate-like feet and bat-like "wings" under their arms for catching the wind on a frozen planet. And how they had a "summer" variant that would come about during that planet's warm cycles every hundreds or thousands of years or something.

Anyway, when there were "cat people" in the ES series, I thought I'd enjoy playing one. But it turned out to be not that great. Oh, they're cute/cat-like enough I suppose, without being "too cute", but somehow seeing such a race wasn't quite the same as reading about them. It's not that I disliked them, but I really didn't care. I'd rather have a human-like intelligence, telepathically-communicating jaguar that looks like a jaguar, for a companion/race instead. I don't mind humanoid beast-races in games, and I still like them in novels, but it's just not very enticing to play one in a video game. Speaking for myself only, of course.

In a sci-fi RPG, I'd love to have a non-carbon-based race to play. To use Foster's books again, something like the silicon-based "photovores" on the planet Prizm. Totally non-human, with varied shapes and appearances depending on their "job/purpose," rather than one single body style, but intelligent and society-driven.

@ Karrantain

With that kind of logic, goblin-like beings should be dominating, well, at least if they have decent IQ in the universe

Goblins aren't usually known for ingenuity, however (unlike the humans).

It's usually the explosive mixture of a short life span, ambition and intellect. That theme is extremely common, but there's definitely something to it.

I get what you mean, but having humans always be this kind of people and the ones meant to dominate in the end is a bit overdone. I think It'd be interesting to change that sometime, maybe have another race with this same mixture, but a bit better at it thann humans or somth

I think warhammer did beast like species rather well, including beastmen (humans and beasts mutated by chaos ) and lizarmen (servants and creations of the ancients )

I think the RPG rule book...what's it called... Total eclipse ? had a few cool concepts aswell, like a lizardman species who pretty much made a reserve of eggs, hatched some of them regularly, had the youngs be born able to survive on their own already, and they were cast out of the tribe for a few years, after wich some of the survivors were selected to integrate the tribe...

And if the tribe was bout to be exterminated they could hatch all of their eggs, have the youngs flee and be taken care of by other frienldy tribes, so in effect a tribe could be "reborn".

Yeah, I just mentioned it because it's a popular theme. Do they have to follow it? Not really. Same mixture could, for an instance, lead the humanity towards extinction.

Read his Spellsinger series. Would it surprise you to discover he's a furry?

What about men playing as women? How sick is that?
To clarify my stance. I have no problem with other species in fantasy games. If they're there to add depth or anything else significant. When they're basically animal-heads on human bodies they're only going to irritate me whilst serving purely to titillate the furries. Edited by Pidesco

Games Workshop and Warhammer universe are so successfull at repelling furries because both Skaven and lizardmen races had no females shown, all lizardmen are clones, and all skaven females kept in slavery as breededs in near-animalistic state.

Sure, furry fetishists are absolutely disgusting. We all seem to agree with that.

I, for one, treat them like furries

Well on the bright side at the moment the poll numbers seem to indicate that a rather solid 52.7% majority has no tolerance for anthropomorphic animal races with 38.6% voting they would tolerate them albeit with no way of determining whether those who might tolerate them would actually like to see them other than by scanning the text voters have left for clues.

Considering the fact that Obsidian has never indicated they were even considering adding them and as far as we know the playable races have already been determined I'd wager this poll will probably not encourage them to re-open discussions on whether or not a last minute chinchilla headed player race should be shoehorned in to PE to soothe the furry faction...

I'm good with that... 8)

Classic example of poorly phrased questions.

It should be:

I want an anthropomorphic animal race option in my game:

a) Strongly Agree

b) Agree

c) Neutral

d) Disagree

e) Strongly Disagree

I should not be forced to play a human in a fantasy setting:

d) Disagree

e) Strongly Disagree

Yes to Furries. Especially Ashtoreth and Hervystia.

"This is what most people do not understand about Colbert and Silverman. They only mock fictional celebrities, celebrities who destroy their selfhood to unify with the wants of the people, celebrities who are transfixed by the evil hungers of the public. Feed us a Gomorrah built up of luminous dreams, we beg. Here it is, they say, and it looks like your steaming brains."

I'm assuming Ashtoreth =/= Astarte?

I'll never understand the contempt for "furries".

Personally I have no issue with anthropomorphic animal races per se, however in a setting such as PE's I'd rather they be closer in appearance to the animal in which they're derived rather than just humans with an animal head. E.g. The khajiit and argonians of Morrowind with their digitigrade stances are preferable to their later plantigrade incarnations.

Then you likely haven't seen much of them, and I envy you.

From what I've read they're people who like to dress up as humanoid-animals and in some instances have sex with one another.

Not my thing but so long as they're not harming anyone I don't see the big deal.

Actually the Furry Fandom features a very broad range of people interested in anthropomorphic art, literature and movies. Some are in it only for the pr0n, others follow a more neo-shamanistic approach to the whole animal/human theme. There are a lot of different reasons why you would be into Furry related stuff and it doesn't have to do with sex all the time. I don't know where all the hate and contempt comes from that is leveled towards Furries, but then it is human nature to hate and fear anything that is not considered the norm or safe.

On topic though: Yes, I very much would love to see anthropomorphic races in PE, but I dont care if they aren't included. There are other games already that feature them, some MMOs, some single player RPGs like TES. I just think that beast races always add something exotic and excitng to a world, if done right of course and with enough difference from a human society and culture. In the end, as it is with most things, it is a matter of taste and preference.

They're a sexual fetish subculture that believes it is extremely important that everyone on Earth should be exposed to the most graphic depictions of their sexual fantasies, and that any and all intellectual properties would be vastly improved if all the characters were anthropomorphic animals who had anatomically correct animal genitals and had graphic sex scenes.

You sure? Can't say I've encountered anyone like that. Or could it be that you are making wild assumptions and use broad generalization?

Yep. *shrugs* So what? I know I am a decent person and I know a lot of amazing people in that community, so whenever I see all this hatemongering going on I can't help myself and feel the need to at least speak up a bit. You quoted it yourself: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing". Peace :)

I think this topic could use a little more posting about actual game-related pros and cons of having humanoid bestial races in P.E./games, and less assumptive commentary re: the possible psychology of a group of humans who may not have the same activity enjoyments as oneself. Hint, hint.
