I wouldn't mind Aumaua looking like battle-toads. Something about the idea of a Saurian/Lizardfolk race being included in the base races is attractive to me. Perhaps it's because 2 or so of the players in my Fantasycraft game are Effet (Frog-folk).

Something about the description of the Orlan suggest to me that they'll be somewhere between a Hobbit, a gnome and a Mogwai. I wonder if the Jarren will make a comeback. I love fighting hordes of cannibalistic midgets. Don't ask me why.

If Obsidian adds any races in the expansion pack I hope they let us play as Orcs. Or Weresharks.

There are a two things that bother me quite a lot in some games that PE could do right with the aumaua.

If they look bestial, I want their females to look bestial as well - not humanised, or even cute or attractive to the human eye.

If they are reptilian, or otherwise non-mammalian, I want their females not to have breasts or wide hips. Seriously, lizard boobs are retarded. Maybe their gender should be apparent only in varying size or colouration.

^I like that.

Aren't females usually bigger in the animal/reptile world though? I know fish are.. snakes seem to be too (turtles and lizards as well). Did a quick googling around. Perhaps the males could have more square, accented, edges. Scales in a way a female doesn't have them or whatnot.

I don't mind females being "bigger" in a race. What if this is a matriarchal society? That would be very different. Drow are the only race that I can think of with a matriarchal society and they're evil. Usually the males are more colorful too as they try to "impress" the females. Peaco.cks/peahen are an example. Look at this guy:

What if the aumaua were birdfolk? We don't see them often.

It wuold be freaking cool to have some race like the tragopan satyra (the video shown above) with a Samoan culture-vibe.

They (samoans) got some awesome tattoos. Samoan warriors especially.

When I read the racial text for Aumana Samoans is pretty much what I was thinking. They live on coasts, live off the ocean, and are generally very very muscular dudes due to their lifestyle. They also happen to be bipeds ;p.

Did you ever watch the mighty ducks animated series as a kid? Because this gave me serious flashbacks.

Nope never watched the mighty ducks. YEah I don't really like the bird-people either, but it would be nice to take features found on other animals and make them the distinguishing feature of a race, just like we do with elves(physique, ears) and dwarves(stature, beard) and orlan(ears, stature).

If the aumaua are a semi aquatic race I really hope they are NOT reptilian or amphibian, as the world of Project Eternity seems to be fairly temperate it doesn't make sense for them to be so, especially as amphibians die in salt water. I'd much rather they went with something that hasn't been done before, or at least, not in games. Perhaps a version of selkies or something like otters? Something that doesn't look silly having arms and being constantly on land...

Freaking Gizmo?!?! lol, I'd love to see this race in a game. Maybe they have an inherent racial ability to turn into gremlins once a day.

The Orlan will obviously look like a mixture of Ferengi and Hobbits, only with hairy ears instead of feet. Duh! :p

Edit: ... and two-toned skin. Which is... weird.

To quote Josh Sawyer:

More like very long (proportionally much longer than an elf's), narrow fox ears, and with hair on the backsides but not the front.

RE: two-toned skin. Do you remember Jadzia Dax from Star Trek: Deep Space 9? Imagine if it wasn't just cutey dot patterns around Terry Farrell's face but that the dot patterns merged into a second, solid skin tone. So, the face, underside of arms, backs of legs, etc. are all a light skin tone and the rest of the body is a (typically much) darker skin tone.

Backtracking quite a bit, but personally I'm hoping the Aumaua do fill the "orc" role in some sense. I know its sort hackneyed to have an "evil" race, but I really like being able to play something that lets me be at least somewhat hated and feared from the get go rather than having to earn (or disprove) such a reputation entirely through deeds.

I like the idea of a samoan themed culture, but what about maori or maylay? Seafaring tattooed cannibal pirates FTW.

I don't think we'll have a "hated" race. Even orcs aren't hated by other orcs and "evil/lower-creatures. It doesn't make much sense to have one race take all the hate. I'd rather dwarves be hated on in specific places, humans, elves, orlans, and aumaua in other places, etc. Each one gets the "love" :)

I like the idea of having racism in the game, but for Aumaua I meant more that I wanted them to actually have a violent, warlike culture which resulted in such a perception, rather than just being discriminated against due to their appearance. But if thats not the case, I suppose can content myself with playing a human or dwarf who just happens to also be an insufferable ****.

If the Auamaua have a primitive, warlike tribal culture, they must also have some powerful magic or else they'd probably get steamrolled by the more advanced civilizations. Now Auamaua mages aren't what I had in mind when I first read about them... but could be interesting.

Well, the primitive war-like culture might make them hated. Or perhaps it might be the "propaganda" usd by other races against them. "They're evil, bloodthirsty terrorists! Stay away!" Even though they really aren't, and are just trying their best to protect their homes from invasion.

To me it'd actually be more fun if the orlan were the "orc" race, its be a great fun juxtaposition to have the feared and hated race be fluffy, have big ears and come up to a humans belly button. From the sounds of it their guerilla warfare tactics doesn't sound like they'd be that popular, and there is nothing stopping a race of short people from being/having a reputation of being violent and aggressive.

Sounds an awful lot like goblins. Apart from the hairy ears thing.

I didn't see anyone discussing it in a cursory look-over of the forums (if I missed it, feel free to point and laugh), so I figured I'd bump this thread. Because we know what Aumaua look like now. Specifically, the new update has two pieces of concept art labeled "AumauaWizard.jpg" and "AumauaBarbarian.jpg"

AumauaWizard.jpg

AumauaBarbarian.jpg

So. There's that. Myself, I'm reminded of 4E's Shifters:

Also vaguely relevant is this quote from Josh Sawyer:

We've put aumaua in a bunch of different outfits ranging from almost unrecognizable-as-fantasy to standard barbarian to quasi-Renaissance wizard. They look a bit strange as wizards, but as we discussed internally, half-orc wizards also look a bit strange. It was important to make sure that aumaua who were from around the Dyrwood didn't look like they were maintaining some weird anachronistic cultural attire in spite of everyone else walking around in a completely different style of clothing.
