Oh God, they have arrived. That didn't take too long.

Like I said, BSN's romance forums are down. Where were we supposed to go, Facebook?

I'm calling troll/sarcasm on this post

I'm dead serious, Chris Priestly totally did close it. See for yourself.

People may continue to read this forum, but currently only staff and moderators can post here.

There is entirely too much fighting, rule breakage and petty bickering in the threads here.

While we appreciate you like the characters the behavior of many people in this forum is against the rules and spirit we want on the BSN.

We are investigating ways to improve this forum, but until we have a solution this forum is closed. DO NOT start "I love X character" threads in other forums or they will be closed and the people starting them will be banned until t a solution is reached. You are welcome to create Groups for people to discuss their favorite characters or romances. Many Groups have been created to support their favorite/hated characters, please continue to create more groups.

You are welcome to send me solution ideas through Private Message.

We'll never know what's in FFG's journal :(

Yeah, that one kept bugging me for a long while. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I was never going to get a peek in that journal. Damn my curiosity :(

I believe people busted it open in an item editor or something and discovered

Sie romance from Alpha Protocol FTW. Player essentially gets blackmailed into coitus. Lolz.

Well done MCA. Bravo!

If we have a "How to survive sleeping with Cadegund" thread, I think we can get a permanent moratorium on romance threads.

Get cracking.

Wait, why wouldn't the player survive sleeping with Cadegund? She isn't a space succubus, so I don't think that you'll be needing to inoculate yourself with any brain extracts that I know of to tap that.

I'll again voice my opinion in favor of romance options.

Here are what people are saying opposed to romance options;

- People want pixel porn.

This is untrue for pretty much everyone who wants this, sexual intercourse implied is not necessarily a bad thing as far as I'm concerned though. In fact, I'd say it actually makes a whole lot of sense. After cleaving through dozens of waves of bloodthirsty critters, nearly getting killed several times it makes a lot of sense that a party member you are close to and you who understand your exact situation want some, "stress relief", this isn't any different than having your character be an alcoholic because of all the junk they have to deal with on their, "mystical quests". Obviously, casual sex doesn't mean romance but the point I'm trying to get across is everyone is being so hypersensitive about it anyway that it shouldn't be seen as such a big deal.

- It will water down the dialogue of that companion for people who don't want to pursue the romance options.

While this is true in part, making specific dialogue for lower Charisma and lower Intelligence do the exact same thing and depending on how meaningful these decisions are and if they have an actual impact on how people view you in the game (Which they should, otherwise, what the hell is the point of having them anyway?) they need to get flushed out quite a bit as well (Not as much as romances, but still). People who want -some- romance option in general aren't so niche that it's unreasonable to want some of the budget to go toward this, either.

Hell, I don't personally care if they write it as a tragedy or not. I want good story and to me good story would be the option of, after having been close with a companion throughout the whole game, dealing with an incredible amount of danger, stress and excitement and growing ever closer that the option of trying to have intimate dialogue about a long term close relationship. This may or may not include references to sexual intercourse, but things such as getting married, having children, living together if there is any long term resolution to the conflict are just as important.

Again, this isn't so niche that I think it's unreasonable to want a separate dialogue tree for a few characters as an option. Sure, you won't please everyone that wants romances, but you won't please everyone no matter what you do, so going, "Oh, not 100% of the playerbase will be happy with female A and female B as the only options, or male A and male B as options, better just not have it". Really, because I'm pretty sure there will be other areas where people aren't 100% satisfied.

I don't understand why people keep segregating "romance" out like it was some kind of different species of the human psyche. Feeling attraction (and the opposite) to people you spend a lot of time with is not a form of lycantropy.

I can understand that "feelings" make some people queasy and uncomfortable, but pretending that they don't play a role in communities (and I consider an adventuring party a mini community) is like pretending the Earth is flat (lalalalala I can't see the horizon). Fear, loathing, attraction, lust, obsession, hate etc. all make for interesting tensions and relations in such a mini community. Why single one particular facet of the spectrum out and keep telling "Don't go there!"?

Yes, I'm genuinely curious by nature ;)

It'd be cool if MCA put options for your character to hit on and flirt with other NPCs and as soon as you did you were rejected and insulted. If you continued to try to romance your companions they would leave your party because they were being harassed. And after the romance crowd tries to romance every companion and scares them all off, they then have to complete the game alone.

It's the way it should be.

Less romancing and more shagging.

In Alpha Protocol, you'd get special achievement points for doing it with Scarlet, Sie, Madison, and Mina. And as a bonus, none of the emotional baggage of having to even pretend that you care about them or listen to them yap about the most inane things. Just be a playa and you're in! James Bond fantasies come true!

Hell, what's really brilliant about romances in AP, is that you get special achievement points for not participating in any romances. Brilliant!

AP: Romances done right!

I will just restate my general views on romances in games from the other thread:

I'm fine with this (minimal, subtle, not latching into central plot) kind of implementation with the only caveat that non-romance content must be at least equal to romance content in the parallel/exclusive sense...

[good words here]

P.S.: I'm not against romance inclusion on its face, but there are plenty of caveats. PS:T subtlety seems to be the most favored.

This is basically my stance. I can take romance or leave it, as part of the story. I am not looking for ME level engagement. At best, I'd like a couple dialog options here or there where I'd flirtatiously suggest my beau accompany me into action, retorted by equal tongue in cheek remarks about scaring the dungeon denizens.

What the word romance means is "the feeling of love (emotion) over sexual desire". I am all up for that. It could lead eventually to a sexual encounter, but that is really not the point. The point is to share something interesting, something beautifull. You form a special bond with that certain someone.

I just find it that whenever a relationship has to be consumated in any given media be it film/books/video games it always comes out really silly and retarded as the authors tend to make it really awkward to watch and sometimes cringeworthy to listen to.

At any rate we are putting too much focus on this issue. It would be nice to have some options for romance, and knowing MCA, he'll deliver something twisted and out of the ordinary, but I think people are putting too much weight on this, raising their expectations and in the end they'll just end up whining why something didn't happen the way they wanted to.

You know, I had not considered this and it's a good point. Considering Obsidian's limited budget and timetable, it might be difficult to accomodate both.

How about a compromise, then?

Romance for low INT characters only.

Historically not every dialogue option reflects the low intelligence. Its more of an added when possible for laughs thing.

For the rest of my life I'm going to have visions of him having a brilliant story scenario pop into his head whilst he screams "Wooo" to himself over and over. :-

But yeah....if he/they do decide to include some kind of romance line in P.E., I'd definitely expect something non-traditional with some ambiguous twist to it ... which could be interesting.

Unlike Morinth, Annah is still alive :p

Wasn't until my third playthrough of ME2 that I realised you could keep Morinth instead of Samara. But then Samara was for me one of the "intriguing" characters in that game. Appreciated my "attention" but told me to bugger off :)
