The "Unofficial" P.E. Relationship/Romance thread

It's plausible but shouldn't be a priority. I don't want the Obsidian community to become a waifu wars board like Bioware's.

There are MANY problems with party romances. Perhaps the biggest is equity. See, you can't have just ONE romanceable NPC. You have to have AT LEAST 2. One guy. One girl. You also have to open it up to straight folks and LGBT folks. Now, what about different races? What if you make a shorty or an halforc or something? Do you have to throw in some loving for them too? Pretty soon, 4+ of the party are shaggable and the player starts to look to NPCs not as companions but as potential sexual objects. That COMPLETELY subverts the party dynamic. Soon, all the party is a den of possible conquests and the game really does feel like a fantasy porno with the player looking slyly to see who he can conquer.

 

Frankly, the further OE stays away from this foolishness the better.

I disagree with that. The writers don't have to do anything, besides following some basic rules of storytelling. Too many options are what make "romances"{Statement: Oh, How I hate the use of that word}, minigames. The writer should only want to write a good story, if that involves any kind of relationship, that should be explored. No need to start fan service for everyone. No need to give options for the sake of options either.

Because that would limit the kind of character content you can experience with a given PC. Since many people feel strongly about romances, this would not go well.

 

Clearly, the only solution here is to make the romanceable companion from a changeling-like race (godlike subrace?). If the NPC can change gender at the player's will, all combinations are covered! :lol:

You should just stay away from the forums. Let the flamers flame and complain with the developers asking why that NPC didn't have his own romance storyline. As long as you don't read their posts they can't hurt your feelings.

 

BTW: do you think that the situation would get better if the developers didn't include a single romance story in the game? It would be just a way to make the flamers flame more.

It would certainly help my selfish enjoyment of the game. The whining of disappointed romance fans is a music to my ears anyway.

Agreed. It doesn't have to get to absurd Bioware levels. I hope if Obsids does include romance, that it isn't presented as "who will you choose?", but that each companion has a well developed arc whether or not they're romanced. Instead of romance being a feature, I would hope it's natural part of the character development, and that the decision to become romantically attached or not would be analogous to other big decisions you would make for non-romanceable characters. Basically, instead of 'achieving the romance' or not, it should be a choice that has interesting consequences either way.

I would like to see romantic options in the game, if the writers feel like it fits. I would perfer for it not to be forced or included just because we want.

 

I always enjoyed them because I've always felt its part of my adventurers story. I understand their is usually an over arching plot like or adventure where the world faces a great evil for the players to overcome, but as a roleplayer and a DM the most memorable moments are rarely player and enviroment but interactions with in the party it self. What happens when you have those 6 people from different places and throw them together to achieve things.

 

But what each companion started adventuring for is rarely the same. I liked the romance options like many others in BG2, but having played a paladin, helping Anomen achieve his knighthood was a close second to my interactions with Aerie. I love the interactions between companions and the growth of their characters. I really perfered NWN2 to first in that aspect.

 

I would like to see companion questlines but I would perfer them to not be based around the romance, but usually around the companions history if the romanace changes dialogs or outcomes thats alright but I would like to see multiple outcomes regardless.

 

I don't really feel the need for cutscenes I mean I don't really remember many cutscene type event occuring in any of these types of games. I would like the romance to end well, but I've never felt that the inclusion of "sexytime" is needed, If the writer so desires a quick blackout and skip was always fine by me. On the actual conclusion of the romance It would depend on the companion and interactions, for some marriage may be the end, or simply an agreement to keep traveling together.

 

To address concerns about wanting this to be like a bioware game, I feel more like BG2 is an iconic example of the old Isometeric RPGS that Project Eternity is attempting to revive much like Icewind Dale, Fallout, and Planescape: Torment. I've played a great many of biowares recent games and I still feel BG2 out does many...especially after the introduction of the Wheel. I enjoy reading and actually understanding what my character is about to say and I would perfer to have more than 2 choices please. I should be able to be respectable and nice to a female character with out automatically locking into a romance.

 

On another quick companion interaction note: I hate all the conversation building ocurring on the ship/or by the campfire. I much perfered games where they were random on entering areas or spread out as your adventuring, not oh I completed a story objective lets go talk to everyone now and see if they have anything to say.

This topic is not about wether or not including love stories in the game, it's about what we would like to see if the developers decided to include them.

Do you know what this means? That you don't belong here. If you start posting comments saying that you don't want love stories you are the one off topic, you are the flamer and, actually, you are the one who's whining.

Maybe if we argue about this for a few more (hundred) threads someone will change their mind. All it takes is one person, and it will all have been worth it. Right?

In absence of any new info from the devs (they are probably sleeping off hangovers, or in Josh's case working hard) we entertain ourselves as we are able.

--what type of romance plot do you enjoy (tragic, happy ending, marriage/family)?

 

I enjoy the nonexistant variety.

I with Boo on this one, as for endings, i think a happy & a sad ending should be avaiable, failing that, have only a "neutral ending" with your guy living out a average life with his/her love interest, with its ups & downs. Not every relationship ends in tragedy and not every one ends in a supah dupah "happily ever after" kind of way.

 

Upon reflection, Jaheira's ending, if i remember correctly was pretty much what i said above, just to ilustrate.
