Cheatcodes for Project Eternity

Recommended Posts

Yes, cheatcodes. I feel like these are one of the ways to enhance the game for the better. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the amazing and hilarious cheatcodes the Baldur's Gate series offered-- which added endless entertainment. Aside from the typical cheat coding gold, potions, weapons, armor, etc... I'm talking about the cheatcodes that you and your friends still laugh about.

Like the beserk chickens cheat code. Who didn't, upon discovering this awesome cheat code, cheat in an army of beserk chickens and then go on a rampage?

Or the cow spell cheat code? Who didn't, upon discovering this awesome cheatcode, drop a cow on their mighty foe?

Or my personal favorite combo of cheatcodes: cheating spells to turn Candlekeep's guards into squirrels and then charming them. Army of squirrels? FTW.

That is something I know myself and many of my friends would absolutely LOVE to see in Project Eternity. I feel not only would it enhance the game, but it would help add to that "classic" feel that BG and Zelda (with its beserk chickens) have achieved.

"According to some, heroic deaths are admirable things. I've never been convinced by this argument, mainly because, no matter how cool, stylish, composed, unflappable, manly, or defiant you are, at the end of the day you're also dead. Which is a little too permanent for my liking."

"A dozen more questions occurred to me. Not to mention twenty-two possible solutions to each one, sixteen resulting hypotheses and counter- theorems, eight abstract speculations, a quadrilateral equations, two axioms, and a limerick. That's raw intelligence for you."

Such childish cheats is a waste of time and has nothing to do with the game. A serious gamer doesn't use cheats to turn people into squirrels and chickens.

Yes we definitely need a "cheat" console. The one in Baldurs Gate was useful in many ways.

First I think that, in a single player game, people who like to cheat should be able to cheat. Use an option in an ini file for who have difficulty to keep themself from using it.

Second it gives developers much freedom. Mod creators can test changes in their scripts without exiting the game, users who experienced a bug, for example a missed trigger, can fix this.

An example: http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/threads/viconia-romance-not-starting.84120/

Fun Cheats like the cow in BG provide fun, so I have nothing against them. They take up almost no development time.

Yeah, a bunch of codes for me thank you please.

Kotor (or was it only in kotor2) did this nicely, enable console, do the cheats and after that your further saves would have a red "cheat" written on top of the save picture. And that's something I just had to live with, after doing the first clean run of each.

I really do not mind having cheats in a game, the can allow for funny situations, testing of alternate scenarios and in the end it affect none but the player itself.

I really dislike the idea of someone else dictating how I should play a game. If it is resources/time that prevents them from adding it I can completely accept it, but some moral crusade by the devs or other players is something I really hate.

If they add a multiplayer mode naturally it should not be possible there, or if they do have a toggle or something.

having a "cheat" console might not be a bad idea though depending on the game.

Take for example skyrim, sometimes quests just block, vital NPC's don't spawn etc. The console allows you to reset a quest, spawn the NPC etc.

Of course this is just one of uses aside from all the other stuff like making you a god or w/e or spawning items/goods.

But players make the conscious choice of using them or not using them. If it adds the option of circumventing game bugs by the player until they are fixed I think a "cheat/test" console is a good plus to have available. Just imagine being stuck on that one main-plot quest in any RPG and not being able to progress due to a bug, that's just annoying.

I surprised how some people strutted in to announce that the idea of putting cheats in the game is perposterous on moral grounds.

Wha'???? As Coincidence said, it's a single player game.

I love cheating in BG. I've never cheated in any other console game, but in BG, there were plenty of times I cheated to enhance fun. Once I cheat coded in a belt of sex change, put my character in multiplayer mode, and dropped it in a friend's inventory. So he put it on unknowingly and hilarious times ensued.

I just wanted to bring it up to the developers as a strongly desired enchanced edition to the game!-- it could be set up just like BG's (as a .ini file) and everyone would be happy :D

Cheating isn't morally wrong, but if the game is any good players shouldn't be bored or frustrated enough to want to cheat.

Grandiose statements, cryptic warnings, blind fanboyisim and an opinion that leaves no room for argument and will never be dissuaded. Welcome to the forums, you'll go far in this place my boy, you'll go far!

Cheats will be in the game. You can't possibly test the game without them. That's why they are there. Just up to some clever people to unearth them.

Look, it's a single player game. Different people enjoy playing how they want to play. Don't judge me if I like to run around with a party of rabid chickens.

I got into the habit with NWN fan modules, which I knew I'd play only once.

If I'd play a wizard, I'd build the character normally, but then bump up strength so I don't need to run back and forth so much.

If I'd play a fighter, I'd probably boost char and int so I could manage the discussions as well.

In a party based games, there's usually no need to cheat as you can have different specialists,

no need to cheat in ToEE or IWD (unless I want something special) but NWN singleplayer is... well a single character.

Eh . . . I'm not really fond out outright cheatcodes. Still, I do realize, as someone that is prone to taking part in modding communities, that having the developer console unlocked, or there being a way to unlock it, is a boon.

Why so serious?

Seriously though (no pun intended), I do hope you are not being that, serious that is, if games are not about fun, then what are they about? Having no humour when playing seems dull. Though I would not use such codes on my first playthorugh, they can be fun when returning to the game, and those who don't want them, can not go to the trouble of turning them on.

Agreed, but afaik there were games, that disabled the QA cheats in the game release later on. Most devs dont bother with that but it seems some do for whatever reason.

To all nay-sayers: If people WANT TO cheat, they will find a way...either via hex editing, save game manipulating or other stuff...it does not affect you what others do with their own saves.

  • 2 years later...

Everyone has their own way to enjoy a game, if you want everyone to play and enjoy the game as you do, you're just another idiot in the net.

I enjoy playing games with and without cheats and playing the backer beta has left me with the feeling that this game needs cheats, be it via console or a cheat engine -table.
