I have to admit the whole non-kickstarter thing was something that had me wary. That and the whole "Oh yeah, if you want your money back in case we don't reach our goal, y ou have to tick an extra option and you still won't get all your money back...."

 

Maybe now I'll pledge something. Well, in a few weeks when I hopefully have some free money again.

 

I still need to be able to buy some groceries soon after supporting PE.. :shifty:

Good to see it finally on Kickstarter for some extra visibility.

 

Interesting too observe the backer patterns from both sides: almost a $90 average pledge on the official site, as compared to $42 on Kickstarter. It may just be a timing things: that the big pledges came in early and so went directly to the official site; or it may be the nature of Kickstarter itself resulting in "drive-by" smaller pledges from people with perhaps a more incidental interest in the project. I know I backed a few projects that I wouldn't have normally, except that I was already logged in and spending on other big-name projects.

 

Will certainly pledge pretty big myself, but will probably wait until my card recovers from the Eternity charge. Thinking of more or less matching that pledge.

I'm confused. On kickstarter they have their goal set to 500k, but the website wants 2 million and is currently at one million.

 

So what happens if Kickstarter raises 500k exactly and the website something like 1.2 million? The funds will be drawn from those pledging on KS, but the game won't reach it's actual goal...

 

Think it's a weird set-up for sure.

Well from what I've seen the whole thing is a bit of a hybridised beast. Roberts has investors, and they've been working on this for a bit now. The crowd-funding effort is a mixed bit of "getting more money in to do it" and "proof of concept" to people who are already invested in it (whether to prove they can put more money in) and/or to initiate fresh investment from other sources by showing how popular it is still.

Or the reverse situation where say, 1.7m is raised on their site and 400k on Kickstarter, therefore technically meeting the overall goal but not being able to actually claim a significant proportion of it.

 

 

Fortunately it looks like there's no real risk of either scenario occurring given present numbers, but it could have been handled more gracefully, yeah.

Its not what market dictates, its what EA and Activision dictates :p tens of millions of pledges on various kickstarters this year shows pretty much what market really wants...

Please show me which Kickstarter got anywhere near a million pledges.

 

As amazing as it is that Project Eternity has raised $4 million, it still has less than 100,000 backers. Games like Call of Duty and Battlefield sell millions of copies.

 

I love my RPG's and space sims, and I'm thankful that Kickstarter is allowing them to get developed, but I understand that I am the minority in the marketplace.

The only reason to make games like CoD is that rehashing same **** for the 7th time is cheap as **** ;) and stupid sheep are willing to buy even big steaming pile of turd if it is marketed properly ;)

 

RPGs sell like hotcakes when marketed properly as well... Look at FFXIII and DA2 as an example... both not topnotch quality games, but with awesome marketing and they sold a lot of copies...

 

Market wants these games, but they are little bit more difficult to make, so they prefer to make BF25 instead of KoToR3

Compared to the FPS Market... Please.

 

The sad reality is that the more marketing dollars that are put behind a product, the more copies it'll sell - I hate that this is the reality, it tells me a lot about my fellow humans, but that's a topic for another day.

 

You'll never get the same kind of sales as you do for CoD just by throwing money at it. It's a complex thing to try an analyse - why Call of Duty has been so popular. I'm inclined to say it's a sign of our times. How many people went to see the spectacle that was 'Avatar' a few years back? If yes, you're part of the problem :p

 

Something like FFXIII isn't that complex, and DA2 was made over 11 months. It's actually a different kind of complexity, as they're very different beasts. CoD being heavily scripted, running at 60FPS, with lots of one shot assets.

 

It isn't about 'how difficult' they are to make, it's all about return on investment, CoD will sell more copies than any RPG made using the same kind of development budget.
