Different Starting Locations for Different Races

Background play before "the event that changes your character" would be possible!

"This is what most people do not understand about Colbert and Silverman. They only mock fictional celebrities, celebrities who destroy their selfhood to unify with the wants of the people, celebrities who are transfixed by the evil hungers of the public. Feed us a Gomorrah built up of luminous dreams, we beg. Here it is, they say, and it looks like your steaming brains."

As long as the prologue isn't too defining.. I don't want the entire back story of my character to be written before I start the game.

Do we really need Project Eternity: Origins? The origin gimmick in DAO was nice, but I think the Arcanum approach to character background would fit this game better. It allows more freedom and takes less work to do.

It'd also be less fraudulent.

I did enjoy the origins mechanic in Dragon Age: Origins, primarily for the RP capabilities it gave to players. It fell on it's face when trying to make the rest of the game much different, though; so I'd say go for different starting points for races, sub-races, and so on -- but try to make these things actually alter the game beyond the first hour.

I agree. I don't care where the player starts as long as he or she is not a prisoner of some sort.

Thank M'Atra someone mentioned it. TES has been hammering the exact same plot device for years.

Technically TES has been remaking the same GAME for years. You're always an incarnation of God fighting various other incarnations of yourself.

Different prologues for different races is one of my favourite features of DA:O. I think it can help with creating some extra replay value for a game.

Agreed CosmicCommander, it had a nice origin selection, but the mechanic was wasted for almost all of the rest of the game.

I never got to take back my characters family castle. :(

Not really into it. Would rather just have different origin starting scenes about how they arrived at a certain place and then start gameplay in the same area. I think it makes for a tighter storyline when it originates in the same place ... it's the decisions/actions you make later that should affect the tale and where/how you travel the land, not what city/town/hut you start in.

But if they put it in, I wouldn't actually object. It's just not my preference.

What about if they put these two things together: small prologue in a place specific for your race, and then some narrative intro, which will tell the story for your character, how he happened to get into the center of the story?
