Base Goal Achieved! Class Speculation!

Recommended Posts

Honestly I don't even really see the need for too many classes considering how the magic system works. Basically you should have a magic user class, a fighter class, and a rogue class, and everything else should be determined by skills/perks/proficiencies. If you want to have a fighting monk, go with a fighter class, then choose skills/perks/etc. tied to religious training and unarmed combat. If you want a standard fantasy cleric, choose magic user class then skills/etc. tied to healing magic and again, religious training. Basically having most character development tied to skills, with certain classes having skills only that class can use would be ideal.

Background perks are also super cool. Like if I want my character to be a nobleman, having a noble house background perk would have other nobility treat me better than if I didn't have the perk, and the lower classes would tiptoe around me and maybe not give accurate info or I might have to work harder to gain their trust.

Three races minimum! As many as 5! There has to be dwarves! ! SEE MY SIG FOR DETAILS WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT OBSIDIAN!

A fantasy RPG without the option to be a Dwarf would be like a seal without someone to club it! OK, that was maybe a bit too much, but Longknife started it!

But seriously, there were no Dwarves in Planescape: Torment... it is time to right that wrong! I will just make one with my Kickstarter reward if I have to :yes:

Wanna share the wealth?

On topic: I love it when Dwarves are right. When they are shallow grunting axe wielding beer drinkers, and thats it, I'm never a fan. But those Dwarves which have a passion for what they believe in, drink beer, and wield axes into the heads of a thousand foes, are incredibly awesome. Also add some spark to them. Like the Warhammer Fantasy Slayer Dwarves were really cool.

Trust me Klaleara, there is no wealth. I just had a credit card and suffered through ten years of RPG neglect - minus the time I spent playing DAO.

I agree with you completely. When they made the Lord of the Rings movies, they did not show nearly enough Dwarf! Gimli is cool, but he should not be somebodies only exposure to Dwarves. They have a regal side mixed in with their ale swilling skull crushing side. I slapped a friend once for saying "Though shall not toss a Dwarf!" too much.

R.A Salvatore's Dwarves are where it's at.

"You would not understand. No mortal possibly could. It is beyond the powers of comprehension of all but the most powerful of powers, and once they understand, they move beyond the veil of mortal comprehension. I can explain it no more than that. Perhaps, sometime, you will understand." - O

Here's my 5 picks

1. Fighter- can be turned into three archetypes, or a mixture of any two, the Knight (heavy Armor and longsword-esque weaponry), the Barabrain (light armor and anything that requires 2 hands to wield) and the swashbuckler (my favourite 2nd ed AD&D kit, it's disadvantage (according to the fighters handbook) was being too awesome, with rapiers and sabres and no armor)

2. Mage- with several classes of magic, covering several provinces. each mage can either be a member of all provinces or choose one to specialise in.

3. Rouge- thief character with whatever archetypes thos people want to play.

4. Cleric/Priest- worships some form of god, the god you praise decides which powers you get (NOT spells), so a priest of *GOD OF HEALING* could touch people to heal them and undead to destroy them, and later develop this ability, ect etc etc.

5.Bard- jack of all trades, can thief, fight and cast spells, in short, bloody bosses.

Is anyone else thinking that every class will have magic of some sort? In the video they mention that magic comes from exceptionally strong souls, and your party is made up of strong souled individuals. If every class has magical abilities unique to them, it definitely fixes the whole "fighters have nothing to do in combat but auto-attack" issue.

Considering Sawyer's mention of peoples souls, and how they are connected to magic, I'd like to see all the class have some sort of magical ability. Maybe the warriors-like class(es) might not be good at it, and there could still be a mage or mystic or whatever class that's good at it, but it kinda sounds like being able to use magic is the first noticable feature that seperates you from joe peasant.

Why yes, I do :D

That'd be great. Kinda like how the classes work in Geneforge, where everyone can technically do everything, but some are way better at some things than others.

I also like the darker more taboo types of magic. I want a Necromancer or Warlock or Blood Mage type character. If this game is going to use souls somehow as it's lore I'd like to see something like Magic = soul growth and enhance and Warlock = soul drain and corruption.

http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/60075-psionic-class/

Going to do a little shameless promotion here if you guys dont mind :biggrin:

I don't think there's anything else I'd rather play than a Psionic. It's so underrepresented, and has a very non-standard niche archetype. Psionics are also deeply rooted in classic RPG design; old school CRPG's gave them some love, but that love's virtually vanished now.

Now one cares about psionics anymore ;(

It's announced that their will be five classes. What do you want to see? What do you think they are planning on including?

Seal Clubber

Turtle Tamer

Pastamancer

Disco Bandit

Accordian Thief

You win everything.

I'd have to say, Probably Humans, Orcs and Elves. For classes, Mage, Fighter, Rouge, Knight and Barbarian.

Just a side note, I would be especially happy if we had a classless system. Classes are rather restrictive.

Hate to make the connection but would you have the game take a runescape style route, I'd actually love that, have the classes thier to train in if you want too but just start at lvl 1 in everything.

Alchemist:

"Stop asking questions!"

But you never did. Your long road has led you down many paths, and always you have asked questions and gained answers. Many secrets have your quick hands and clever mind unearthed: You can call thunder and lightning when there is nary a cloud in the sky, fire leaps from your fingers without flint or tinder, under your ministrations wounds can heal or fester and kill. But for every answer you recieved, yet another dozen question awoke in your breast, your thirst is unabated. They have called you an alchemist, a philosopher, a tinker and a hedge witch but the name does not matter.

You will keep asking questions until your tongue is stilled by fair means or foul.

Awoken:

"Are they any better than beasts, those deaf to their own soul?"

You were taken as a youth, the first sigil painted onto your flesh as your soul awoke. Since that time you have learned what was needful for a civilised being: That ones flesh must be mastered before one may be at peace, able to hear beyond the silence to where true wisdom is born. With every lesson learned you placed another sigil upon your flesh, and learned to master that portion of your being. At long last your soul speaks as loudly as your body, they are one, and you are master of both. Strength and wisdom are yours, for they are the gifts of an awakened being.

All answers are known to you, it merely remains to prove worthy of the asking.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

I'm not too concerned about classes since we'll be getting at least five.

What I would like to see are alternatives for classes other than thieves/rogues to unlock things as you could in the Infinity Engine games: a thief picks locks, a wizard has knock, a warrior can bash things. Obviously not the exact same things, but basically spells that open locks and being able smash locks instead of always needing a thief to pick them. You could even get creative with it. Perhaps different spells may work better/worse (freezing, melting), and maybe the same goes for trying to smash things with different kinda of weapons (a dagger may not work as well as a hammer).

(Why yes, I did get frustrated at the Dragon Age 'only rogues can open locks' thing)

Sadly I'm pretty sure they're going to go with the old and boring tried and true fighter, rogue, mage, cleric, random-jack-of-all-trades-that-nobody-really-cares-about.

What I really hope they do is separate armor and weapons from classes, and make the classes more about functionality or the kind of magic they work with. Because magic is supposed to be tied to the soul, it can be assumed that everyone has access to magic, regardless of upbringing so the class should function as to what kind of powers the person has access to. Though personally I would love to see the Seven class numbers be hit so we can see classes based on diversity of culture verses old staples.

Regardless I would be very happy with the fighter types having more options then just click and attack and hope for the best. in D&D terms, a level 1 fighter is hitting things with a sword while the mage is hiding behind him. At level 20 the fighter is still hitting things with his sword while the mage is reshaping the cosmos. It's just not really fair . . .

What would you suggest otherwise? the D&D character Archetypes cover more or less everything, Rouges for being sneaky, mages for casting spells and fighters for hitting things.

as for fighters in D&D terms, whilst they were still just hitting things with swords at level 20, they should (if the DM is half decent) also be involved in several inter planar intrigues, run their own keep, have hundreds of Men at Arms under their sway and generally be an important person in their crystal sphere/plane. Wizards, by comparison, are usually just butthurt loners in Astral fortresses.

The classes I would like to see:

* Opium-Addicted Wastrel

* Fireams-Obsessed Vegetarian Musketeer

* Collector of Oddly-Shaped Soap

* Lice-Infested Power Cur

* Feral Swamp Mountebank of Psionic Destiny

No prestige classes though, too fiddly.

I think we need an organized list at some point and a poll to show how high the interest is in every suggested (plausible) class. This might have to wait for the suggestion forum im hoping they will launch when the kickstarter runs out of time.

Agreed, but we already know that ain't happening, so we may as well roll with the punches.

Same here. Class systems seem pointless especially in SP CRPGs and I hate my character concepts being restricted by them, but I guess we are stuck with them. Hope I can multiclass. That usually eases the pain somewhat.
